I'm poz...
« on: December 09, 2011, 03:49:19 pm »
Hello guys,

I've been reading this forum and I'm so glad I found it.

I'm poz. I don't now when I was infected. I've done unprotected sex like 3 times in my life but it was long time ago (5-6 years). Since then I never fucked without condoms. But i never did a hiv exam.

I did it 6 months ago and I was poz. I'm very sad. I'm just freaking out and so curious about from who I got it. My viral load was very low around 400 and my CD4 300. Do you guys think my infection is new? Could I have been infected all this years and my viral load stay so low??? Or you guys think I may have got it recently?

I'm so sad right now... :(

Hi Mattinla,

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis but welcome to the forums :)

I too, (almost certainly in my mind) was infected  5-6 years ago and don't know exactly how I got infected. I was only diagnosed early this year. There are many of us who thought we were 'nearly always safe/ always safe' and still ended up getting infected so you're definitely not alone in your experience.

In time the sadness and anxiety will abate and life does and will go on.  Life can and will be just as frutiful and fulfilling as we envisioned, provided we lift the cloud of pessmism. There will be challenges but nothing unsurmountable if we have the right attitude.

Almost all limitations are self-imposed, right? I certainly believe that- especially since we're nearly in 2012 and HIV is already considered a chronic medical condition.

And things can only get better!

Hope to see you around on the forums.

Best

Edited to add: There is no way to definitively tell exactly when you were infected based on your lab counts. However, if you’ve always practiced safe sex in the last 5-6 years it can be concluded that you were infected in one of the unsafe sexual encounters  that you recall from 5-6 years back.

Hi Matt, welcome to the forums.

It is quite possible to have a low viral load despite having been infected years ago. You may be what's called a long-term slow-progressor.

It's a waste of time, energy and emotion to dwell on trying to figure out where your hiv came from. What's important is that you know now and you can take steps to preserve your health. Hiv is no longer a death sentence, but it's not to be ignored either. Make sure you're having labs done and seeing a doctor at least quarterly.

Hang in there. It's normal to feel sad in the early days of dealing with this virus, but things should get better in time. Don't put your life on hold or give up on your dreams. You can live a very normal (heh - whatever "normal" is supposed to be) life. Yes, even with hiv.
