Title: VP Biden misses the mark on HIV
Post by: buginme2 on July 12, 2012, 12:53:52 pm
Today VP Biden gave a speech to the NAACP.  Overall, it was an excellent speech.  However, during a portion of the speech he was speaking of the achievements the US has made in medical research and declared:

"HIV is a thing of the past in the US"

Now, he was speaking to the NAACP and just two days ago on PBS was the documentary "Endgame, AIDS in Black America" where they demonstrated just how big a problem HIV is in the black community.  Not to mention in two weeks at the AIDS conference in Washington DC, there has been talk that there will be increased pressure for the US to refocus its attention on ending HIV in the US and less on its international focus.

That phrase "HIV is a thing of the past in the US' just struck me the wrong way.

It's just another Biden Gaffe.  He's a foul mouthed buffoon. I doubt he actually beleives that, but he doesn't think before he opens his mouth. And if this was scripted, then who the hell is writing his speeches?

It amazes how the Office of the VP is always filled with idiots, save maybe LBJ.

Typical Joe Biden gaffe.  I don't think he really believes this.  I wonder if there will be any damage control from Obama's campaign (doubtful).  I also doubt that Romney will seize on this -- I mean, if Romney admitted there was an HIV problem in the US he'd have to do something about it.   ::)

Has Romney said *anything* about HIV?  Not that I can see on google, except that he would cut funding to the US Global AIDS Initiative.   :P

Unfortunately Biden is not the only one that continues to miss the mark. I am incensed whenever I hear how, "HIV is a chronic and manageable disease." Perhaps for many it is but I'm not one of them and many of the folks over at Long Term Survivors would beg to differ as well. Even the physicians in their responses to questions at the The Body site maintain that HIV is manageable-hell being water boarded is both legal and manageable in this country.

Mishma - HIV is a a chronic and manageable disease. Why does this statement put you out? The message on HIV is complex and seemingly contradictory but only for people who don't want to think calmly a moment. For many people in the world, HIV is manageable.  For many others not.
This message is NOT at all the same as Biden's gaffe.  In the USA, HIV is not manageable for all those outside the healthcare system.  Duh.  So its not a "thing of the past."  A serious but manageable disease that afflicts over a million people in a country is not a thing of the past.

You've misrepresented Biden's quote.  He said, "We see a future where HIV is a thing of the past."  He never said it WAS a thing of the past.

You can see this at the 18:30 mark

Modified:

He goes on to say this is why they continue to invest in the NIH and making sure everyone has affordable healthcare.  He said this is the difference between Obama and Romney.  He's saying these investments will hopefully lead to HIV being a thing of the past.  And, he's right on.

This is what happens when you make a thread about a direct quote without providing a link for context, which is why I refused to comment earlier.

Mishma - HIV is a a chronic and manageable disease.

It falls down to semantics my friend. By definition manageable:
able to be managed, controlled, or accomplished without great difficulty."

It is only through great difficulty, courage and perseverance that many of us manage our HIV and its myriad of complications.

PS context is everything so perhaps I've missed something
