AMG Arrivals / Departures - Boston 2009 - Updated
« on: October 23, 2008, 10:21:16 pm »
Okay gang, I know this may be a tad bit premature, but if no one has any objections, I'd be happy to track this data for the group.

Please post your anticipated arrival and departure date, even though you may not have made airline reservations yet.  This will help Dennis to get a rough estimate of attendance.  This is especially important with regards to the Meet & Greet.

I saw something in the Wall Street Journal today that airfares are expected to head downward in 2009.  This is good news for all of us.  Keep an eagle's eye on the fares for your trip and buy when you think you have the best deal.

Hugs to all, Ric

Keep in mind that there is an Amtrak station a couple of blocks from the hotel (The Back Bay station).  A great alternative for those on the East coast.

Also, JetBlue has a number of flights to Boston each day (there are even a couple of nonstop ones from Richmond -- almost unheard of actually)

Can't wait to meet folks.

Don't forget to check fares into Providence RI.  My airfare plus transporation to Boston from the airport will be about $130-$150 cheaper.  It does add an hour commute, but the savings is well worth it, at least to me.

Good lord, this gathering is still 9 months away.  I don't even know what I'm going to have for supper, yet you want me to commit to something that far out?     ;)

Heck, I could father a child in the meantime.   :o

And wouldn't you all be surprised if I showed up in Boston with a mini-Mr RAB or a  mini-Missy RAB?   :P

O.K. so there isn't a chance in hell that's going to happen, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

I've been checking airfares, and it looks like the fare will be about $500.00 for me.   (I could save a $100.00 or so by taking an all nighter, but I just don't have the stamina to do that.  Not with fathering a child and what not!  Jeez!   :D)

So, my plan is to arrive on the 6th and depart on the 11th.

Either way, I'm looking forward to AMG--09 Boston.

OK, at this point in time, I plan to be there Aug. 5 through Aug. 12.

I am seriously considering taking the train, which would probably add several days to the trip, but that is what vacations are for.

So, I will check it out and let you all know more later.

Joe Killfoile and Stephen Clair will be arriving in Boston, whenever we want, because we live only five hours away in Montreal.  I am also delighted that you all will get to meet Kate, my daughter, who lives and works in Boston.  For those who have never been to Boston, or Bean Town, it is a great city, lots to do and the people are great.  If you love seafood, diet before you go and plan to eat lobster, till you have your fill.  I am really excited that you chose Boston and I look forward to meeting old friends and making new ones.

So, I can actually see the possibility of making it this year for the first time. I don't want to be a drag because I'm 18, but Boston is actually a reasonable distance (also I love Boston!).

There is of course a money and transportation issue. I've never been in a plane before, as well. So. Uh.

But I thought I'd put it out there if someone is interested in helping me figure out a plan.

Hi Mouse...There is no shame at all in requesting assistance and you are still a very young person starting out in life and therefore your needs may be greater.  Why don't you PM the grants committee to get your name in the hat for airfare and/or hotel assistance and there may be folks who would share their hotel room at no cost to you and even donate to the committee with their funds, part or all, to be earmarked for you specifically.  Spending money is also a possibility but I don't want to put the cart before the horse as the economy is tough and I don't know what the final numbers will be for grants committee collections this year...Good luck and hope to see you in Boston!!!

robert

Just an FYI if you are planning to ride the rails from Chicago (or anywhere for that matter) Boston Back Bay Station (BBY) is mainly a commuter station and there is no checked baggage or assistance provided.  Boston South Station (BOS) while further away offers more services.

From your friendly former Amtrak employee,

AA

CHI-BBY  roundtrip is currently $166.00 (there is no tax on rail fare) for a coach seat.

/edit because I don't proof-read very well.

The Davids and most likely the lovely Ms Bonnie will be arriving on Aug 5th and departing on Aug 11 (+ or - a day either way).  It looks like flights will be around $244 (taxes and such included).  This is through US Airways.  I prefer Delta, as we've had wonderful luck with them the past few times we've flown, but we'd have to connect in ATL and add a couple of hours to the flight... kinda backwards if you ask me.

Hey Guys and Gals,
The Davids mentionned that AMG was in Boston this year.  Almost my back yard!  Haven't been able to come for a couple years, but it would be great to reconnect with some of the fine folks I met in Montreal.  Boston is 3.5 hrs from the Hudson Valley.  A nice ride.  I'd most likely be coming in Wed or Thurs and leaving on Monday.  Have to sit down with the calendar and get things organized, then call the hotel.  I love Boston - have visited many times.  I know a few cool spots.  Looking forward.  Thanks organizers for the opportunity.

You said it Mark. :D  Though I have to confess.  When I first found out about this I had this insane dream that she brought Kuni with her and we were all roaming the streets of Boston with a pig on a leash!   ::)

When you update your arrival/departure date, please include you flight information.  That is, Airline, Flight Number and Time.  This will help other attendees coordinate sharing groung transporation opportunities.  (Remember all the fun the group had on that flight from DAL to MEX last year?)

Wasn't sure where to post this...but I've been away for a couple of weeks. I've been a little bit depressed, what with trying to recover for surgery while having such beautiful weather. I purposely scheduled surgery in the wintertime to avoid this!  I was thinking I would be back in normal shoes in 4 weeks, but now it's going on 5 and will be at least 6 before we can consider that. Tack on $1250 in unexpected car repairs, which wiped out my meager vacation savings, and to top it all off, Santi and I were planning a very nice Valentine’s Day and I’ve come down with a cold which ruined the whole weekend (almost.)

I had decided that I wouldn’t be able to do AMG in Boston this year. I was getting to be okay with that, especially when I knew Jan wouldn’t be coming. Then I read last night that Jan’s coming after all! I was upset about my decision and spent a good part of the night tossing and turning and trying to figure out how I could afford this trip after all. Santi wouldn’t be able to come with me this year.

And then today we met my dad and step mom for lunch. We had a nice time and I told my dad my woes.  After lunch he called me and told me to pick out a few flights to Boston and he would buy one for me. I’m going to Boston after all! I don’t have the flight yet but I’m aiming for 8/6-11. Somehow I’ll get the money together for hotel and spending. I have to have a room for myself #1) for appearances sake (jealous partner) and #2) because I snore so bad nobody would want to room with me. I may not be able to take the side trip to my childhood home in Hull, but I’m still down for a trip to Salem.

So for now I’m happier, if still a little feverish, with a funky nose and burning eyes. But I missed my friends here, and am looking forward to seeing many in person this summer!

Hey Ric and Everyone:

Slight change of plans.  Jan and I will still be arriving on the 5th.  But we're departing on the 13th (making the Provincetown trip a day trip instead of a 2 nighter).

We're going to have a "Red Carpet" this year?   :o

Holy cow!

Assuming I can get the "royal" one out of bed early enough for us to get to the airport on time, I think we get to Boston at 3:00 p.m. (don't recall exactly).

Changes for me: I'll be arriving on Wednesday instead of Thursday, so that's 8/5 @ 1:05pm on American #1106.

Now Santi is thinking he really wants to try to go after all, but we may not know for a few months.  No guarantee we'll get on the same flight.

The other change is that my sister has offered to help defray hotel costs by using points she gets through her job, but of course they won't work for our hotel, so I may be staying at Winthrop Beach Sunday and Monday.

How rude.

I can do anything if I put my mind to it....it's just that my mind isn't awake at that time in the morning....what are our chances of that handsome man off yours getting up and seeing us off with a good breakfast?.. :D

Question..If I'm to be treated like "Royalty" then why aren't you sleeping in the Cellar..sorry basement... ;)

Basquo I'm so please you are going to be there and I'm keeping everything crossed that Santi makes it.

Harrumph!  Who the heck said you'd be "treated like royalty", you're lucky I'm even letting you sleep in the house!   :-*

Aren't you the same crazy woman (along with another certain member who's user name starts with the letters AZT) who almost got all of us thrown out of the hotel in Montreal?  And yet you have the nerve to expect to be treated like "royalty"?

Trust me that ain't going to happen.  I've already got a list of chores for you. . . .washing windows, darning socks, ironing shirts, scrubbing toilets. . . .you know. . . .those things that females are supposed to do.

Make that THREE! Santiago has decided what the priorities are for this year, and he will be coming with me (and joining Nick) on AA #1106 to Boston!  Currently we're pulling a window train with Nick in front and Santi pulling up the rear :o but I'll try to get my dad to reseat me and then get Santi next to me as well.

WOO-F'N-HOO!!!

p.s. we're still working on Curtis...looks promising.
