Pet store updates, or omg customers fail at life.
« on: January 17, 2008, 12:40:12 am »
Just felt like sharing some of my experiences with my job so far.

I really like my coworkers a lot. Well, most of them. My manager is fucking awesome. She is a total bitch but I love her to death. She's very intelligent and well informed and cares very much for the animals and I get good vibes from her. I told her I was trans (had to, kinda hard to explain away a social security card with a female name on it) and she took it so well. She didn't even hesitate. Very respectful. Also gave me the days off I needed to visit my college on the 28th and 29th without question either. So cool.

The customers though! Ugh!

There was this lady that came in and was interested in buying a lil female chihuahua from us. We went through everything with her about health and warranty and stuff and then went to pull the puppy and noticed she looked ill, so we took her temperature and it was pretty low for a puppy. We told the lady all this and said we weren't comfortable selling her right now and wanted her to see a vet. She kept ARGUING with us telling us that she could handle it and that the puppy would be fine and stuff. Um. No. Not really. And then her response to it's temperature?

"Um. Well. Maybe it's temperature is low because the room is cold."

... WHAT?! It's a rectal thermometer. Also - PUPPIES ARE NOT COLD-BLOODED. KTHX.

UGH.

And then there was crazy Asian Fish Lady. I couldn't understand her at all and she asks me to get some goldfish for her. They're 10 for a dollar right. They're usually sold as feeders. Now this is a 50 gallon tank with like a metric fuckton of goldfish in it, and they're all typical orange colored goldies, except some of them have slight white markings on them.

So of course Asian Fish Lady asks for the ones with the white markings. And she kept pointing at individual ones she wanted as they were like DARTING PAST and I was like ARRGHH YOU JUST POINTED AT like FIFTEEN FISH. WTF.

It seriously took me 20 minutes. TWENTY MINUTES to get the exact fish this bitch wanted - all for a dollar sale. Oh. My. God.

And then also apparently our customers are comedians. I was cleaning out this big box we have that we put puppies in. You can reach in and pet them. It's pretty big. You have to get inside of it to clean it. So, I was doing that - scrubbing it out with bleach, when this guy walks by - REALLY obviously gay, I think he was flirting with me or something, because he leans against the box and goes:

"So, what breed are YOU?"

I just stared at him like wtf.  ::)

Nice there Jaser....sounds like a lot of fun really. If you have any fish or bird questions let me know...worked at zoo in the aqarium and Sea World, and took care of 8 parrots and 18000 gallons of salt water fish :)

I know you are going to love it. And how was the little chi chi pup? Was he ok?

Hi Jaser - there is a golden rule in retail sales -

The customer is always right - stupid, ignorant, pig headed, rude and arrogant - but always right.

Sounds like you have some of them sussed out already - good work

People are exactly why I work for myself.  My report card always said, "does not work well with others" :P  I have customers, but I politely send them to hubby - he's the patient one. ::)

Excellent post, young Jaser.   And I can guarantee you're gonna learn every bit as much about people as you will about animals while working there.

Puppy wound up having a cold, thank god that's all it was. She's recovering now and she should be fine. <3.

New update:

Sometimes mice get out of the tanks if stupid teenagers come in and lift the lids and don't close them. Ugh. So, they have sticky traps set out. Usually we can get them off teh traps okay with some oil and water, but I guess these lil mice were too small and were struggling when they were on the tape and broke some legs and lost a lot of fur and skin. :(

They had them in a cage in the back and were trying to decide what to do with them since they couldn't put them back in the tanks with the others or sell them. They were about to put them in the freezer to put them down and I cracked under pressure and offered to take them.

... SO. I now have three gimpy little baby mice with broken legs and missing fur and skin. :/ They're on antibiotics and vitamins and stuff. They're moving around and eating and stuff so hopefully they're going to make it, but I couldn't just let them go without giving them a chance. Ugh.

I know I know. I'm taking my work home with me already. But what was I supposed to do? :(

Yairs, it's surprising that such nasty things would be employed in a pet shop.

They are devilish good for dealing with vermin about the house, however.

Jaser,

Here's a homemade humane mousetrap (from the comments on the toilet-tube blog) that you could make a few of and take to work with you. You could probably locate a few cans and get them made during the next week.

Lou takes an old coffee can and with a knife cuts an "X" in the bottom side and pushes the four tabs inward slightly creating an entrance of about a half inch, the can is baited with black oil sunflower seeds (Any bait will do) and placed in our entry.

The mice will enter the can but will be unable to get back out, voila, our non lethal mouse trap, and it works great, we usually get between twelve and fourteen mice over the course of the winter.

Has anyone else read through that blog's comments? Some are quite funny.

Used coffee cans have two ends - a metal one and a plastic lid one. You cut the hole in the metal end and put the can on the floor on the lid end so they can't chew through to get out. They won't get impaled because the hole is in the "roof".

There's another good trap idea in the comments of that blog - involving a bucket with a can/bottle on a stick across the opening. You smear the can/bottle with peanut butter and when the mouse tries to put his feet on it to eat the pb, the can/bottle spins and into the bucket he goes.

And here's another idea...

Why don't you just lock the damned mice cages and post a sign saying to ask for assistance? Might be a whole lot easier than setting traps. ;)

humane mouse traps. phooey.

my ferocious attack cats, Venus and Serena, ensure no living vermin ever make it into my house. i do, however, wish they would not throw them on the tin roof, over and over again, as they hone their hunting/torturing skills.
