Stopping a cold before it comes on - Any Suggestions?
« on: January 02, 2014, 06:02:51 pm »
Today at work my co-worker brought her sick 6 year old into work all day because she was sick and had no where to take her.  I sat near this coughing 6 year old all day trying to tough it out and by the time I get home I'm coughing up a lung myself.

Does anyone have any remedy to stop a cold before it comes on.  I really do not want the bronchitis that this child had been coughing up all day but I now feel it coming on.  Please help.

I went into work feeling perfect until I heard the sound of the child next to me.

It was one of those deep, chest coughs.  Definitely did not have anything coming on until today's episode.

Never heard of a virus of any kind striking so fast. Sorry you aren't feeling well but I don't think the kid could be the cause.

I don't know any proven remedies but it can't hurt to drink lots of medicinal teas with lemon and honey. The supermarket has different herbal teas for colds. Also, sleep.

I agree with Jeff and Mitch -- you did not catch this cold from that kid.  Colds generally take a few days to incubate before symptoms appear.  Oh -- and you are contagious BEFORE you have symptoms, so you may have given it to co-workers!

On to your question.....  some swear by things like Zicam or Coldeze to shorten a cold, but personally, I just get extra sleep and drink a bit more fluids.  The difference when I do that vs. just "moving forward" is clear.  Much shorter and less severe.  So -- have some chicken soup, go to bed early and take tomorrow OFF.

Good luck,
Mike

^^This.

It takes a few days for whatever cold/flu pathogen (bacterial or viral) to replicate enough once it's in your body to cause symptoms. In the meantime, the more it has replicated, the more contagious you become. Even before symptoms. By the time you're coughing/sneezing and spewing out pathogens, they've replicated into the millions, if not hundreds of millions or more. That takes time.

Fevers, and aches and pains that can accompany something like this are not actually a direct result of the pathogen, but rather it's the body's immune response that's responsible. Once the pathogen has reached a certain threshold in the body (which again, takes time), it triggers an antibody response and also triggers the body to start producing chemicals such as interferon. Interferon is notorious for causing fever, aches and pains - just ask anyone who has taken artificial interferon for something like hep C treatment.

The above is the core reason why hiv seroconversion illness is referred to as "flu-like" - the appearance of hiv in the blood stream produces the same immune response that thousands of other pathogens produce. <- Useless fact when you're preaching to the (seroconverted) choir. ;D

Cutting off one's head or boiling the children is usually effective. Other than that, I have no useful advice. . .

Not so sure about heading off a cold -
but when I get first symptoms I:

1) Buy and drink a 1/2 gallon of no-pulp orange juice in a 24-hour period
2) Take 3 Advil every 8 hours for a 24 hour period
3) Take the day off work
4) Get at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep
5) Eat chicken broth in large amounts

So far the above at least shortens the length of time I feel crappy.

My grandmother was right! Probably not about the poultice made of egg membrane to get rid of blisters or the castor oil as a daily farm supplement....but I'll give her this one about catching a cold when it's 'cold'.
