Philosophical question about infection and oral sex
« on: September 24, 2017, 02:21:35 am »
Hi all. First of all, thank you for this space and the service you provide to the community.
I have been reading the "just tested poz" forum, and I've found a few people that are certain they didn't perform any risky activity, but nevertheless became infected.
I remember now a particular scenario where this individual had protected anal intercourse (being the receptive partner) and unprotected oral, and was trying to sort out how did he get the infection.
I remember also one of the moderators saying that there are no safe sexual practices, just safer.
All of this makes me wonder if I am comfortable with my current sexual behavior, because like the mentioned case, I'm having protected anal but unprotected oral, since I have read here many times that oral sex is not an effective way of transmitting the virus.
Despite this, there seem to be cases of infection and I would not really like to miss any point on the subject, nor find any unpleasant surprise on my following tests.
My questions are: how could the mentioned cases of infection with protection happened? Should I use condoms also for oral sex?
It is worth mentioning that here in Argentina, public campaigns and most professionals describe oral sex as a risk activity (low risk involved, they say, but risk anyway),
Thank you very much for your time.

Oral could mean anything and if someone or some group can't even be bothered to be specific what act they mean or are referring to it's not worth listing to, that is my take on it.

Getting oral has no risk, no cases recorded and for good reason it does not meet the requirements, the only oral with low risk is giving a BJ, but even that we know the mouth lacks the cells to infect and saliva is a barrier, hence no need to panic but test yearly as routine if you have been giving people BJ's.

Reading peoples personal "i just tested positive stories" will just drive you nuts.
Science has moved on and anecdotal stories are just stories, not facts.
Also we don't comment on them and we are not here for a Philosophical debate.

Now there are a number of reasons why someone might not tell the full story, or the how as a newly diagnosed person, being newly diagnosed is often emotional and unnecessary scary time for people.

The truth could mean admitting to something they are not ready or willing to admit/face up to out of unnecessary shame or other reasons such as fear of prosecution, or rejection and the stigma that may come with the truth. Often people also poorly understand the real risks or are not "out" regarding a certain activity and had additional risky behaviour before re-testing. Also people often mistakenly think someone they trust was not a risk and discount the exposure when it was the source.

We have even had people here believe HIV comes from out of space so don't fall into the trap of reading anecdotal stories and taking them as fact as its not. They are stories nothing more nothing less and they mean nothing to you.

Stop reading the "I just tested POZ" sections and move on with your life.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.

More information on HIV Basics, PEP, TaSP and Transmission can be found through the links in my signature to our POZ pages, this includes information on HIV Testing

Kind regards

Jim
