Wishful, I'm very new to our condition so my feedback will be minimal, but I consider myself 'straight'.

I have no idea if it would interest anyone, but to clarify while I have had a few experiences with other males I'm quite convinced I contracted the virus through heterosexual sex. In my case this was unprotected sex with female 'sex workers', perhaps an atypical route to infection among posters on this board, though not such an unusual one worldwide.

I suppose the main issue with being heterosexual and male is the lack of compatriots in the same situation, but I'm so private about it that I don't think it would make any difference. Another is that one's girlfriend or wife might be less prepared to deal with the development than a gay man's partner.

I think you've gotten to the crux of the issue here. I suspect it isn't so much a case of lack in the compatriot department as it is hiding from the world - and by default, each other.

I'm not criticising; I'm commiserating. It's one of those 'rock and hard place' moments.

Ann: Dont know about the hiding from the world part. But would agree that there is a differnece in how problems are processed and dealt with. Perhaps more toward: "I can handle this myself" then it is "runaway and hide".

There are quite a few of us around, but the shame and stigma associated with being HIV+ (a topic that is often discussed in this forum and elsewhere) keeps us well closeted. Unfortunately it is still assumed by most of America that any man with HIV is either very gay or an addict.

It may also be that men are generally not as communicative as woman are, and as we all know "real men don't cry." The "dating" thread over in the women's section (yes, girls, we're watching you!) is a hoot, but I don't think most of us are particularly eager to discuss the women we've dated, or to quote Erica Jong, "our stars, our scars, our choice of scotch in bars."

I suppose we could be more creative: "Topic: Prostrated by my prostate" or "Levitra levity".

As for the question of disclosure, I do wish to avoid it, more for employment reasons than anything. My biggest fear is that treatment will lead to all-too-obvious alterations in my physiognomy, making it impossible to keep the secret.

there is one lone straight man in my men's support group. it's funny, cause there he is surrounded by 20 or so catty fags and manages to navigate the social waters quite nicely. to make things more interesting, he's kinda hot and all the guys totally hit on him, albeit in a loving and teasing sort of way. so, he's welcome and a great friend. oh, and i have seen some other poz guys at the mixed group as well. hmm, ill tell them about this site next time i go there. ill keep an eye out for straight poz men for my straight poz sisters out there.

Hi,
I am straight and married w/ children. I have been married 8 years, and did not find out until a life insurance exam 2 years ago about my status. Luckily, my wife and children had not been infected.
I have a very supportive wife, but other than her and a few close friends, it is not something that straight men get to talk about much. I have been reading on this site that last couple of years, and have now decided to start posting.

Wow there u guys are..i was wondering!!!!..Thanks everyone for your responses...Here in nj where i live i dont meet anyone my within my age group who is poz, let alone any straight single men..I mean even at the doc i go to its all older people, and my town isnt that small that i wouldnt run into 2 or 3 people like me..i know with my kids dad..he was in denial a long long time..and i think he is just now starting to come around but im not sure. I have found no luck on the poz dating sites. It seems like it's full of "god fearing" women who want "god fearing" men so they can treat them like the "queen" they see themselves as. Either that or they're scammers. Oh and the other option is that some of these ladies are really overweight. I'm not saying that overweight ladies can't be attractive, just that I like my women slim to athletic but definitely more on the petite size. Kind of like how many women don't like short men, I don't want to date a girl who weighs more than I do.

LOL I likely weigh more than my boyfriend. But I am 3 - 4 inches taller than him. LOL
I'm not as stick thin as I was in my 20's but I sure as heck aint thick. I'm a fairly tall average sized girl.
I'm not a short man chaser. I just happened to really like a man who was shorter than me and unlike the girl I was 20 years ago the height thing doesnt faze me.

Wow. That's totally different from the ''god fearing'' experience I had growing up. In most of those relationships, the women were treated as anything but queens.

Most straight poz people on this site are just in the wrong part of the world. Sadly in the Western World HIV is something that disproportionately affects the gay community. If we were all to relocate to South Africa or Russia we'd likely find more straight people for the possiblities of dating or at the very least a dependable booty call...

I've met a lots of hetero pos men. Not all of them where dating material and some of them I'd prefer to have never met but none the less I've met likely less than one hundred but absolutely more than fifty either online or in person.

You just gotta put yourself out there socially. Join local social groups, go to hiv seminars or other hiv related events in your area, frequent different chat sites and forums ect.
Dating only pos men certainly shallows the dating pool but they are out there. Its just a matter of finding the right one for you.
Somewhere out there theres a fella wondering where the hell all the nice pos women are.

I grew up not far from NYC, the youngest of two children of upper middle class, nominally jewish parents. Both of my parents were reasonably intelligent and liberal, responsible and never abusive. Nevertheless, they did not seem to be particularly communicative in the ways that mattered to me as a child. My sister and I never spoke at all. Only fragments of any happy memories from the first ten years of my life are retrievable now. I stumbled through adolescence as mindlessly as most of us did.

I spent my early twenties in vain self-absorption. Despite a measure of material success, I wasted my late twenties either too blind or unable to deal with life, and from roughly mid 1979 to the late spring of 1980, I sought refuge from the pain of my confusion by injecting myself with cocktails of cocaine and heroin, and for those ten months I lived in that chemical dream with a young woman I knew who made her living by selling herself to other men.

When the money ran out, as it always does, so did she. I woke up from my stupidity and started to use the gifts I’d been given by life. The year was 1980.

Still searching, but lacking direction, I tried writing for a while and I did manage to have at least one short piece published, but it very soon became very clear that I was not really meant to be a writer, so I finished college and then law school. It was a practical decision and it gave me a sense of purpose and meaning that I had never really known before. I followed that path, met my wife in 1985, and for the next two years lived a happy, if not boringly conventional life. We married in November of 1986, blissfully unaware of a cunning invader that I had unknowingly injected into our lives six or seven years earlier.

Like everyone else in those days I thought of HIV and AIDs as a strange new plague fueled by tainted semen and bottled blood that fed on the flesh of gay men and hemophiliac children. And then, in late 1987, as the epidemic continued to spread and the world learned that HIV also sought out intravenous drug users and that it could sometimes incubate hidden for years inside us, devouring our bodies from within, only to emerge years later, I began to wonder if I was also one of those who had been infected. At that time my concern was mostly for myself; I had never had any signs or symptoms of the opportunistic illnesses that science and medicine grouped so neatly together as resulting from this new "acquired immune deficiency syndrome.” I hoped I was wrong, but somehow I knew I was part of it all.

I went to a clinic down on Ninth Avenue operated by the New York City Health Department and left a small sample of my blood, and on a cold clear day in January of 1988 I learned that I was one of those people whom the doctors grouped together to as "long-term slow progressors." Like all of us who are HIV positive, it was a day I will never forget.

Back in those days the ways by which the virus could or could not be transmitted by heterosexual sex were still not well or widely understood, and my wife and I tried to maintain some semblance of physical intimacy while avoiding any risk of transmission. For a few months we held each other, we touched each other, always aware, always fearful. We would never again make love. As time passed we stopped touching each other. We stopped holding each other.

Somehow, despite the virus, despite the fear of death, no chance of children and no physical love, I managed to do well - for a while.

For twenty years we lived together in secret shame the twists and turns of life with HIV, in a relationship devoid of all sexual contact. We were an old couple before we were old. I suppose that the simplest explanation is that we loved each other and neither of us wanted to admit defeat, but there is also an element of complacency and convenience; this world can be a very lonely place.

Maybe we lack the courage to split up and find more suitable partners. Maybe there is another woman out there who will laugh at my jokes, and a good, responsible man out there for her who doesn’t live his life dancing on the edge of a cliff. Maybe this is what passes for love in the age of AIDs.

i know you have a very playful side, but Iwishihadacat's post was heartfelt. If you reread the last half, you'll perhaps understand what's amiss in his marriage. It's not as easy as slipping on a condom and banging away as one might hope. Long-term relationships are sometimes much more complicated. This is an agonizing circumstance for him.

I tried ALL of those poz dating sites this summer and finally met one guy. The main problem was geography, no one lived close by. The one I finally met had some issues, and I'll leave it at that. And when I was actively checking, there was never any man close to where I live and I think some of them were incarcerated. There was one guy that I was really vibing and developed feelings for but he died last year. I found this out from his gf who claimed that he was hooking up with lots of women and not telling his status. I knew his status because of where his ad was but not sure if I believe the hooking up part.

I've heard this even from people who really should know better. i think you are all right. its horrible to perpetuate these myths that are stigmatizing straight men. its also unfortunate that MEN & WOMEN are cheating on their partners or are unable to live lives closer to their core identities. with that said, i believe (no facts or stats, just my 50 cents) that the majority of straight men, especially straight men outside of the us, receive the disease from unsafe heterosexual sex. once again, don't bash my opinion. i know there are probably plenty of men on the dl everywhere, but i don't think we should generalize hiv to msm sex just because we are the most visible poz group here in the us (and the easiest mode of sexual transmission too).

1 of the straight guys in my group got it intravenously. the other 2 got if from their female partners. the lone female in my group (we adopted her, it's so great, she's the only woman out of a group of 20-30 men in our male support group) got if from her husband who was having unprotected msm sex. i know i got it because i needed something from another person, i was lonely and wanted a partner and was willing to bend the rules for this 1 (2, 3) right guy.

anyhow, has anyone found where they are hiding? if they are scared of people thinking whatever about them oh well, they can join the group. it is not a fear they share alone. it's horrible none the less, but im sure plenty of us are still struggling with new facets of our identities gifted to us by hiv. when i was hospitalized 10 days ago the nurse asked me if i got hiv through drug use. i wanted to hit her. i don't want to tell people at my work cause i don't want them thinking im diseased or that i habitually make poor decisions. i still struggle with being a victim of my hiv too. anyhow, those are some of my fears. i know they are irrational but they are tacitly perpetuated in our society and its hard to divest myself of things that have been bolstered or inculcated by the masses.

The Phildadelphia-NJ-NYC corridor by far has the highest IV transmission rate statistics of anywhere in the US so I'd assume there's a healthy sprinkling of straight men in there. Philly: the men I do see at the docs are way older than myself...with the exception of one guy that i know from school (who by the way was infected via hetero sex)....i think many are unaware of their statuses and/ or are in denial...like my infector....and those aware dont want the risk of anyone finding out..our town is really small...we only have 2 places that treat HIV (that i know of even), one is the local clinic that people go to for everything and alot already assume if u go there and its not to take your child for shots that u are going bcus your pos, and the other place (where i go), only older people go there it seems...

That happens with teh gays too. I go monthly to a group, but our first year or so it was bumpy with some months where only the moderator and I were there, and we just ate pizza and shot the breeze. The ASO here has a support group every Thursday night. I went a couple of times. I was the only woman and the rest of the attendees were gay men. Which is alright; like you said David, a support group is for support. Just saying, the straight men aren't coming out in this area either. And neither are the women. The case managers all tell me it's the women in this area who never, ever venture to the ASO for anything like a support group. They're way too afraid of the stigma. And they tell me most of the poz women don't go to the ASO for services either; the case managers have to go to their houses. I personally could care less. But then, it's just me. My daughter is grown and gone. I might feel differently if I had children living at home.

I'm not sure I "get" the stigma excuse about going to an ASO. You have to be fairly paranoid to think that people are sitting in the parking lot taking notations and pictures of people going in a building. Plus when I think about it every ASO I've known of outside of GMHC in NYC has not been all that identifiable, generally in a building with multiple uses.

At any rate it's not a great excuse as far as support groups go -- you can always coordinate with a case manager and try to round up others that feel stigmatized and meet in a private home. You just have to be willing to do the work.

I don't have a problem going to my ASO and like Philly said it is in a building where other community things go on. If anything I might see one other person in there when I am there. And actually have only run across one person that I knew. He could only assume what I was there for though I knew what he was there for.

My ASO has been a great help to me in plenty of ways though I wish I had a better case manager. I work with her to the best of my ability.

Well, my state has almost 8,000 people (total) living with HIV/AIDS. I probably know a handful, outside of these forums.

I have no problem feeling stigmatized. The ASO here is the sole occupier of the building it's in. I did a t.v. interview in the middle 90's without backlash (too bad I don't have a link

). But, I knew people who have since passed on who faced horrible discrimination and bias. This is such a conservative area, chalkful of Bible-thumping rednecks. The people who won't come to my ASO, well, I'm not sure exactly what their greatest fear is. I'd be interested to talk to them sometime though.

I did 4 or 5 TV interviews in the early to mid 90's. I decided not to do anymore because the last reporter twisted my story and made my then alive, now dead husband out to be a bad guy. They took roughly an hour of tape and cut it up to make it sound like he infected me purposefully. I got so many phone calls from angry friends and relatives it was horrible. Fortunately they believed me when I told them it wasn't true.

It takes a lot of trust to be interviewed and I don't think I'll ever trust another reporter.

As far as going to the ASO. I could give two craps who sees me go in the building. My thought is what the hell are they doing there anyway? LOL
Not that I really care who knows I have HIV. The only people I know that aren't aware of my status are business related. And if it where left completely up to me I wouldn't care if they knew.
I'm not sure if my immediate neighbors know. But if they did I wouldn't care. I'm sure they wouldn't be bothered by it.

On October 18, 2002, Pennsylvania initiated confidential name-based HIV infection reporting in all areas except Philadelphia. Code-based reporting was implemented in Philadelphia in March 2004, and the switch to name-based reporting was made in October 2005. The one county of Philadelphia contains half of all cases for the entire state.

This shows the 2006 number at 9,537

I really don't think Denb had any mean feelings in his comment, but I certainly understood what he was referring to. You guys who are straight and have never even thought about hooking up with a gay man; probably need to learn a bit from some of us who have innocently hooked up with far more self confessed "straight men" than you might have thought would have existed.

Marco, you have expressed a keen interest in becoming involved in helping others to not become infected, and this is one of those areas that most governments and health programes seldom admit exist, or even know about, so it is really important to not shun the knowledge that millions of straight men do go outside of that community and come to the gay community for sexual satisfaction and then take the bug home to mommie/their wives, or girlfriends.

It is just a part of human nature. We in the end, are all sexual beings and each one of us describes ourselves in the way that suits our needs and natures.

I’ve been HIV positive for 18 years. I’m in no way a neophyte. Thank you for suggesting where my focus should be, but actually you’re speaking of HIV transmission that occurs in behaviorally bisexual men. In my state, that accounts for about 12% of our male transmission rate, as best as we can estimate.

Being behaviorally bisexual, Bi or Gay are in fact different then being straight. Regardless of what happens on Oprah, or at times in this forum, there ARE HIV positive men who never had sex with another man.

I can no longer count the number of eyebrow lifts, or verbal equivalents I’ve received immediately following a disclosure of my status and the fact that I’m straight.

Now, I do not intend to be backed into a homophobe corner here simply by saying that I‘m not Gay. I’ve said repeatedly in other threads here that if it were not for the love, compassion and teaching of Gay men I would be dead. I’ve lived most of my HIV positive life trying to live up to the challenge they gave me and ‘pay it forward’ in a sense.

My chief complaint here is that almost inevitably in this forum, when one of us discloses that we are a straight man with HIV a post that basically can be distilled to “Ummm, SURE you are” occurs. It’s tiresome and in my opinion one important reason why some of us post sparingly here.

Generalizations and stereotypes are not fun even when they are true. They are worse when their premise is false.

How is THAT fair? Here, when others have presumed me to be Gay, I have responded with the statement that I am not, only as a point of fact. So is that disclosure meet your definition of someone who is so uncomfortable with their own orientation that they have to overtly disclose heterosexuality to ‘cover’—or is it just me being honest as others are allowed to do here?

By suggesting that any straight man who discloses his orientation is in fact overcompensating and therefore not straight, you have removed the option for us to state honestly who we are. It reminds me of those flawed syllogisms and interrogation processes that uses questions such as “Have you stopped beating your wife?”. If one never beat their wife there is no way to answer that question as asked. It presumes a false answer.

The original poster of this thread asked a question to the effect of “Where are the HIV positive straight men?” and when we replied with our presence here we are expected to be derided because of our orientation?

I think this brings the larger issue to clear light. Is this forum one that actually accepts HIV positive individuals regardless of their mode of HIV infection and their sexual orientation, or doesn’t it?

Personally I could care less how anyone got HIV. Nor do I care about anyone's sexuality issues, though I'm not implying you have one at all. Obviously MANY people do, which I guess is the point others are making though I've not been following this back and forth that closely. This is why I only pay so much attention to facts/figures on transmission routes in terms of sexuality because it's such a hard thing to define accurately, though of course it's still very helpful.

Now, I'm sure you've been around enough gay men to have figure out that there's always a handful that seem to think that they can always flip the hetero in bed. I hope my earlier comment didn't come off that way, because I'm not like that.

ha some of us are on rasta time and a little late

(in other words if beauty is in the eye of the beholder i ain't been beholdin that well lately)
if anyone is familiar with the area then you know asf (local org) is so confidentiality conscious that homeland security should get a clue and being a double minority (straight & white) maybe even triple cause the girls got their own club that i got chastized last year for crashing (innocently) as my 1st and only other post, life ain't a beech it can be a real mother fucker with spite and bubble gum the only thing holding it together (that's spite not spit). I've had girlfriends don't get me wrong and still love em, well one not so much, but two od'ed and passed into the black, one went overboard and i'm cool with her not coming back and another left town due to forces stronger and beyond our control. (that's just the last 3 years)(with time at a buddist retreat for soul therapy)

I understand and have no problem with u girls wanting financial security, at least the ones i'm attracted to, iv'e just decided to focus on that aspect cause window shopping for a guy really isn't all that much fun and i would probably rather get a colonoscapy (okay maybe not) but you get the drift. luv ya all of you like a brother but only want to keep & sleep with one of you.

yeah i subscribed to hivnet.com and its soooo lame..never more than 3 peopl on at a time and that includes me! Yes, there are a few of us out here that understands where you coming from. Me personally I'm one of them type of guys that don't need sex to complete me I need someone that understands where I'm coming from and knows how to listen to the one that is having a problem with the disease
