Title: Life Assurance?
Post by: Loa111 on January 29, 2020, 05:20:21 am
So yesterday I was doing a review with a financial broker. Of course it came up in the review that I do not have Life Assurance currently, which I am conscious of with a wife and young kids, if I drop dead (hopefully not anytime soon) it would be good to have some death benefit for them. I ducked the conversation, told the guy let's focus on business at hand and we'll talk about that in a few months
So the million dollar question...

Can a Poz person (in my case an advanced DX) get Life Assurance?

I've my own small business, so I have to pay for everything myself e.g. health insurance. Fearing if I can get Life Assurance the cost even for a low level of cover would be very high?!?!

I wondering in my country Ireland where I could find out about this...

I certainly did not want to reveal myself to the broker yesterday.

Hiya,

Yes is the answer.

In Ireland, HIV status is a question on the life insurance application and they will ask for access to your medical records from the GP.

My experience is you can get life insurance, however, last time I was quoted it was more expensive. x cents per euro of the cover more for living with HIV

Some of my experience when getting mandatory life insurance to cover the mortgage application - https://metro.co.uk/2019/05/22/people-living-hiv-forced-explain-got-insurance-9654290/

Good info there Jim thank you. I read too that some say it is better to wait until the CD4 increases if a recent enough DX.  I'm up to 241 CD4 as per 2 weeks ago.

Wow...the b@*tards BOI wouldn't give you a mortgage? I hope you can get one soon or got sorted since? I see the article is only from May 2019 so recent enough.
I don't trust banks nor insurances co's much...the fine print is never in the customers favour.

Their questions on how one got infected....FFS.... a big seagull shat me one day and I got it that way. Stupid questions to ask.

I think I will wait a while until I've more time & better CD4 under my belt, better chance of a better price then maybe.

I notice on another article I just read. Prof. Mallon the expert at UCD said poz people now are having greater life expectancy than non-poz due to the regular medical checks https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/insurers-urged-to-update-discriminatory-hiv-policies-961705.html

I suppose it is similar with health insurance, I pay my own, with the same provider from before I got Dx'ed. If I went changing providers it opens a whole can of worms I'd say.

Not sure - good question and might something HIV Ireland can answer or someone at the 3rd National Conference for People Living with HIV this weekend.

Mine is paid by the company and to be honest, I can't recall anyone asking when they switched from VHI Healthcare to Laya Healthcare about 5 years ago, I can't recall being asked 15 years ago when I first joined VHI ... I am sure there must be pre-existing condition clauses.

Since being knocked back in the 1980s by an instance company who said in their advertising that HIV wasn't an automatic ground for exclusion, I've never reapplied.

My husband won't need more than my superannuation and the house.

There's a bit to be said for self Insurance.
