Despite the fact that I've overindulged in some off topic threads lately, AIDS has been very much on mind. I've been sick, with what just a year ago I would have viewed as an average cold. Now however, I wonder if my CD4 and VL counts will take a hit from this. This board has been great in helping me understand that life goes on, we're still normal human beings that get sick from time to time. Never the less. This is the first time I've been sick since my dx. Don't Panic, in big friendly letters. I'm sure I'll be ok.

zach, yes (generally) your cd4 count will be changed by an illness, but it's just a temporary thing and it rebounds back.  For example, in Oct '09 I was one of those misfortunate souls who got swine flu before the vaccine was available (obviously this is harsher on your immune system than a common cold) and a month after recovering I had lab work done and my cd4s had plummeted and I lost 50% of them.  When I next tested 3-4 months later they were all back.

I realize your cd4 count is low at the moment due to your late diagnosis and OI, but even if you lose half of them temporarily you're assumably on a prophylactic for PCP so you are protected.  It's normal, just like when you were HIV-, to get a cold every year.  You won't die.   And yeah, everyone is weird about this their first year of diagnosis.  At least it's not bronchitis.

There's a great new article on late diagnosed guys in the wirdget just to left right now.  Here's a link in case you don't see this right away:

Reading the article, even if you are having a slow rise in CD4 count, once you are undetectable for a while you are pretty safe.  But, in your case, since you are still in that window right after a pretty tough time, well it wouldn't hurt to be a little over cautious for a few months.  Not for years, but maybe for a few more months.

That's not to say panic.  But perhaps you should call your doctor and ask if you should come in.  If you used to be one of those guys who never went in to the doctor you may need to have a calibration discussion too.
