First Day of Work on Meds
« on: January 08, 2007, 09:44:03 am »
Hey Guys,

I am going to start work today. It will be my first day of work since I started taking Meds on Thursday. I am a little worried that I will lack energy and sharpness. But overall I am looking forward to teaching my first graders. I hope all goes well, because I have not been doing anything taxing since I started taking them. I have had very low energy and I feel generally tired. I guess I am lucky because I have had no bad side effects on sustiva and truvada. Wish me luck! I am so happy to be going back to my munchkins after winter break! Life goes on.

Hi Rob,

I think you'll also get a boost of energy when the drugs have had a bit of time to start working fighting that damned HIV.  I know I sure feel lots better after a month of Sustiva & Truvada (Atripla, actually).  I never experienced any loss of energy or fatigue from them.  I think the stress and anxiety over the drugs sometimes causes more problems than the drugs themselves.  I know if I'm really anxious (or have had a panic attack), I'm pretty tired later.  Good luck with it, but I think you'll be fine.  Take care.

Hey y'all,

Thanks for your words of encouragement.

I just finished my workday, and it went better than I thought. As far as the meds go, I have not had any really bad side effects, besides a bit of concentration issues (I need a little more reaction time to answer questions at times).

Severe nausea and diarrhea, and poor apetite are things I have been dealing with for the past few weeks, so I cannot attribute these to the medications.

Going back to work was uplifting for me, even though my energy level is still low. It made me feel good that I can still do my job. My biggest fear is not being able to work, losing my pay and my health insurance. Yes I am a worrier, I guess.

All in all, I had a great day. I was able to focus on my job and not on the nausea, which was a big plus!
Thanks for telling me that it will get better with time David. I am really hoping that when my body is not so exhausted from fighting this virus, that the nausea will go away. It is a horrible symptom of HIV. I hate it.

The only discomfort I felt was having to answer so many times why I am so skinny and not being able to tell people the truth because of the nature of my job. There is still a lot of prejudice in the world.

Hello Rob,

Glad to hear that things went well for you !! I remember when I had started meds, I thought I should take a few days off. So I did. But actually got through those first first weeks pretty well, especially considering , where I was starting from.

Take care-----Ray

Each day gets better. It totally sucks in the beginning but one day you just say to yourself "I felt great today". Just sneaks up on you or at least it did with me.

koi - congrats on getting through your first day.  I know how rotten I felt before starting meds, so to me the meds themselves seemed like a cakewalk -

your energy level will steadily improve - and you should see your digestive process start to get back to where it was as well - get ready to start pigging out again on the foods you enjoy and in a few months, start thinking about loving the life you have  -  it is still a great life, just a little bit more 'interesting...'

best to you.

Hey congratulations.  I'm right there with you, taking the same stuff.  Only I'm now about 20 days into the treatment.

You're tougher than I was.  I took about 5 days to adapt to the meds.  Now, the only thing that I have to deal with is sweating at night from about 11:30pm - 3am.

Have not really noticed lack of concentration yet.  Some days when I get home I feel a little feverish due to tiredness but cannot attribute it to the atripla yet.  If you live alone, watch out for depression.  I had a tough weekend this past weekend.  Stay around your support system.

Best wishes man

Rob---good job getting through your first day.  Hopefully it will get easier as you get healthier.  I'm dealing with the weight loss too----I hate having lost lean muscle mass. Now that my GI infection is gone hopefully things will turn around.  (Any suggestions anyone aside from a high protein diet and exercise?).  What are you doing for the nausea, besides endure?  I have the night sweatsevery night  but seems to me that ain't nothin.

Rob,
Glad you made it through the first day back at work.  I take my sustiva in the mornings at 6 AM and once in a while have those slow moments.  I've been on meds 9 months now and overall I can say things for me are about back to normal in terms of work and how I feel and working way too much.  I sent you a PM with a bit more detail.

Hey Rob,

I am happy to hear you had a good first day back!!  I just started back teaching today (I am 3 months on Atripla).  My first class I felt like my head was full of cotton, but my second class was awesome.

Bests,

My second day went by fine. I was a little more tired. But that was due to some stress that I am working out with my ex. So I did not sleep very well. I realize that sleep becomes so much more important when you have HIV as this is really very crucial time for the body to recover from the meds and the side effects. All in all I am so happy to be back at work. People are genuinely happy to see me back. I was out for a week right before winter break with a bad bactrim allergy. I need that routine to reassure me that it will all be fine.

Indeed a happy day back to work! Congrats!  My doctor was quick to order an HIV test when he noticed that I had lost approximately 10 lbs over the several months.  I also had reported to him that my stools were soft and the rest is history...One thing that I found to be extremely helpful as to the soft stools was that I began to eat a cup of Activia yogurt from Dannon each morning and I also started drinking a bottle of their yogurt drink with l. casei immunitas.  In about two weeks, my stools were beautiful - lol, so to speak.  Nowadays, I make my own yogurt.
