Did something stupid (ear piercing)...what are my chances?
« on: December 11, 2013, 03:10:35 pm »
Thanks in advance for your help...
Me and a friend were drinking and decided to pierce our ear, well one ear each. He pierced his first with a regular sewing needle and then took the needle out of the ear of course... It probably sat a few minutes on paper towel before the same one was used to pierce my ear... I didn't see any visible blood on the needle or paper towel but it doesn't mean there wasn't blood on it of course...also we sprayed isopropyl 70% on it before and after but I am not sure how long it sat, maybe just a minute or two and we probably didn't do the best job. I am not sure if the person is HIV+ but there is a chance that they are and they haven't been tested. If they are, what are the chances I got infected? It's only been a month so I can't get tested yet, I will in two more months. Thanks (no symptoms as of now). Thanks so much for your help and I won't do anything like this again. I feel really dumb and regretful.

You cannot transmit HIV from a sewing needle. You do not have an HIV concern.

Thank you so much for the quick reply. So the HIV risks when they talk about needles are more just about the ones where blood or  a substance and go inside like a syringe or a hollow needle?

Rod is correct, as sewing and piercing needles are solid needles and unable to transmit HIV.
