Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Transmission through nail

Hello

I want to start by saying that I am using an interent connection from an internet caffee, so I am not sure that this IP has not been used before on this website by previous users.

My story is as follows,I was playing a basketball game with a bunch of friends when a member of the opposing team cut himself by a nail that was hanging out from a piece of wood placed on the side of the court. We didnt pay much attention to the situation until a few miutes later(maybe 1-2) I cut my arm by the same nail.the cut was deep and it bled for a while.... Was I at risk if the guy was HIV+.

I would appreciate if you can give me some scientific explanations behing your answers to help calm my head.

The answer is NO. The scientific answer is because you don't get HIV off environmental surfaces.

HIV is a fragile virus. The kind of incident you're concerned about is a common enough in many athletic situations as well as elsewhere. We'd have known long before today if it was a risk for transmission.

25 years into the epidemic there's never been a documented case of transmission in this manner.

I don't see any need for further concern nor for testing. Read the lesson on Transmission on this site. You'll find a link to it in the Welcome thread which opens this section. You'll get all the basics you need there.

Thanks for your replies, but how is this different than being struck with a needlem because it is known that needles transmit hiv? And is one minute enough to deactivate the virus?

I have read the lessons, and it says in this section that transmission can occur via sharp objects

"Transmission in healthcare settings. Healthcare professionals have been infected with HIV in the workplace, usually after being stuck with needles or sharp objects containing HIV-infected blood. As for HIV-positive healthcare providers infecting their patients, there have only been six documented cases, all involving the same HIV-positive dentist in the 1980s."

A nail os a sharp object, that is why I am worried

There have been a total of 57 occupational exposures that have caused infection since 1985 in the US. Accidental needle sticks, busted test tubes, lacerations from broken bones and major blood splatters. In 21 years, that is not very many for the millions of people treated each year.

Tab,

A nail cannot contain blood. On the other hand, a hollow bore needle, such as ones used in a health care setting, can. This is the difference. Blood that is inside a needle is not exposed to the environment the way blood on a nail would be.

You didn't have an hiv risk by any stretch of the imagination.

so Ann, just to make things clear...nails, screwdrivers, lancets, scissors, razors, etc are never infectious even if they had some blood on their tips and they cut into other person's skin?

tabreez, you won't be getting HIV, but there are other viruses and infections you can get.
