I read that Matty was beaten up
In The Netherlands it's nowadays more and more trend that homosexuals are beaten up. In most cases by young men of north African and muslim descent. Until now politics were really slow on taking the right measures. But because of the structural nature it has become now some things have changed.
The Amsterdam Police Force is using now cops who will act as "bait". They pretend to be gay to find these gay bashers. When caught these folks not only will face sentence for gay bashing but also for discrimination.
A bit late, but nevertheless a good development that it's taken seriously.

The Netherlands has always been so progressive and tolerant of many various lifestyles... I would send the gay bashers back to the land their from... I hope this situation of discrimination is resolved soon.

The problem is that we were/are too progressive and liberal. This has led to the wrong kind of political correctness which has led to protecting ethnic minorities even when they did wrong (criminality).
A few years ago we already were shocked by the fact that in some mosques imams were preaching that homosexuals had to be thrown of buildings (headfirst). The reactions were that people were shocked but actually only a few imams were sent back to their country of origin.
For a long time we weren't allowed to say we were having troubles with some immigrants from muslim countries, this was regarded as discrimination or right wing extremism. The situation were we are now at is that gay bashing has become structural. And I suspect the real reason why there's now more action against this is because more and more gay tourists avoid Amsterdam (which means loss of income).
The reason why we have these liberal and progresive laws is because they're needed to protect minorities who do have the right intensions. Sad but true. The true nature of our inhabitants is not that liberal or progressive.

There's an awful lot of gay bashing in Eastern Europe, too. Especially in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia. However, the assaulters are the natives there, predominantly white christian males, supported by their local police force and backed by their politicos. I wonder where they should be sent to... ::)
Then, these same white christian males also assault and discriminate migrants, particularly people whose skin and hair is a tad darker than their own. This also happens in large parts of Eastern Germany which are already considered a no-go-area for migrants. It's very sad and those who are politically responsable don't do anything about it.
It's no surprise that people who experience this type of factual and structural violence always pick on someone who they consider weaker and lower in hierarchy, usually gays and women. In this respect, muslims are not better than christians but they are an easier target.
