For the Computer geeks !
« on: October 21, 2006, 06:13:50 am »

As of this past wednesday, Microsoft has come out with the new released version on Internet Explorer 7.

I downloaded it ( took about 5 minutes or so on high speed)  And I am Just now figuring it all out. It's actually quite nice, I like the tab browsing, and it seems faily simple to use. The new internet Explorer browser, was in beta testing, and was not supposed to be relesed until probably December, so a lot of people were surprised by it's release on Wednesday. There are a lot more security features built into it.

If you are happy with your internet Explorer 6, by all means keep it. If you like to download IE7 you can go to microsoft.com and get it from there.

If by some chance, something goes wrong with the install, you can uninstall it from the add/remove programs, and it will revert back to IE6.

Just thought I would let you know. I like it, and so far it's been great !! I like the look of it.

Thanks Ray. I'm a geek!  ;D
I have been messing with the second beta release of vista too. It has explorer 7 in it. Its a bit different and things you are use to seeing are kinda hidden, so some might not like it. Theres a learning curve. Vista is just too slow, too massive. I doubt many will want to switch to it, until it comes on their new computer pre installed. XP is just fine for some time to come. The only thing I was shocked about with installing vista was it installed drivers for everything itself, hardward wise that is. I had no "yellow out" hardware needing drivers, in device mgr list. That was a first for any windows install, any version. And I have a lot of junk. An ati HDTV tuner card, bluetooth adaptor, just some strange things that vista installed on its own, and it all worked. That is, ati does not yet have the vista software to run the tuner, but the card drivers all installed. Vista is  still a beta, but vista sure looks "pretty". A different look and more tools and toolbars to customize. And they have gone back to the old analog clock look (if you want that). I like the new look a lot, but man is it slow. Like I said, its still in the making stage.

Ray,

I downloaded IE7 a couple of days ago. I agree with you...I like it. I too like the tab browsing. Hubby is waiting to see how I like it before he downloads to his computer.

Hi Randy, Teresa,

Yes, I am kind of a semi-geek !! Thanks for all the info. I haven't yet tried windows vista beta. I only got this computer in July, and was trying to figure out windows XP.  :P I love getting into things, and try to figure out, what I can tweak , to make things faster !!! I love to fiddle around in the registry, and have caused some problems on occasion, but I always get it straightened out, one way or the other. It's just my nature to try to figure out how things work.

It does sound like that  Vista, can be a little bit of a  resource hog !!

Hey Teresa, so far IE7 seems to be working fine. I am sure the more it is downloaded and used, they will find more ways to improve on it,( as they usually do) but I do like the tabs.

I was also missing the "menu bar" until I found you can put it back up there, by clicking "tools" and putting a check mark next to menu bar. It still is capable of being customized a little bit . so far so good...

Take care----Ray

The IE7 RC2 was cute and seemingly stable but I'm too hooked on Firefox to switch. The only time I use IE these days is when some site is so bass-ackwards that it requires it - or Windows defaults to it when clicking a link, which it really ought not to do!

I don't like IE 7, I want my 6 back. I will try what Ray said and remove it. Does anyone know how to get the disk cleanup to work? For some reason everytime I try to use it, it will say it has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have tried from a previous restore point, same thing..

Hello Blue,

Tab browsing allows you to go to multiple sites, with just a click. saves lot of time and typing. When you want to visit different sites you just click the tab.

As I understand it. IE7 will be included in next months critical updates. You will have the option to install or or not.

Hello Queen,

I have never encountered that problem, so lets start from the beginning ;
(for Disk Cleanup )

Click "start Button" then "programs", then Accessories, then system tools, then "disk Cleanup"

It will then ask you to select the drive you want to clean up. Select "C" drive.  Then click OK

At that point, the "Disk Cleanup window will open, you will have a variety of items to place check marks in. ( some will already be checked) And if you click each item individually, it will give you a detailed desription as to it's purpose, and if it is safe to delete.

After you place the check marks, click OK and hopefully it will do it's thing, without getting an error message.

Another way you to "clean-up"

Is to right click on "My Computer" then click "explore" then click on"local disk C" ( on the right side of screen) then select "properties, then click on "disk cleanup". after that, it is the same as above.

Hopefully this will work for you, if it doesn't and you still get an error message, you may have to try to do a Disk cleanup in "safe mode"

By the way, these instructions are for windows XP

If you are not comfortable doing this, have someone take a look at it for you, I don't want to see you mess something up, and be without a computer !!!!!

Sorry to say that I am also a Firefox user.  I love it, and Micro$haft had to steal tabbed browsing etc from firefox to improve their slow and tired old Internet Exploiter.  Firefox is so much faster ;)

When ever I use IE, I can feel my CD4's slowly draining away...

JRE----

I have always done it by going thru the start menu, but I get the error message that disc cleanup has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. I tried it the alternate way you explained and it gave me the same message. How can I do this in safe mode? Thanks for the help...

Hi Queen,

Sometimes it can be a little tricky to get into safe mode. It's all in the timing.

If you click your start button, then click on "help and support" when that opens, in the search box ( on the top left) type in safe mode. It will tell you how to start your computer in safe mode. it is ususally done by tapping on the f-8 during start-up.

If that doesn't help you this link may be useful ;

ANyone else tried playing with vista?
If IE7 is auto updated, I see that as the future. That is, some day MS will not have xp, or vista or etc. It will just be ongoing series of updates. And instead of buying their os upfront, you will have to pay a monthly fee to use and access the os. The fee will include all updates.
I dont know this for a fact, I just see ms going that route in the future. My prediction.
