arthritis, mobec and prednisone and intestinal bleeding
« on: July 22, 2010, 09:33:24 pm »
i see where others have all of a sudden found themselves with arthritis and now it is my turn.  I started with 2 or 3 joints in my finergs being sore for about 3 months and then all of a sudden all my fingers were inflamed and swollen.  My doctor prescribed prednisone which has knocked out the pain and swelling until today when one index finger joint is extrememly painful.  I have had extreme pain in the achilles tendon for whaich another doctor prescribed Mobec.
Now I am having problems with intestinal bleeding so I will stop the mobec, call the doctor tomorrow and let them know.
Does anyone have any advice or guidance for me?  I have had intesitnal bleeding off and on for aver a year now. I was on naproxen before this.  I had a scope done and no polyps or cancer-yippee!  but this is a bothersome problem and now with the pain in both hands it is affecting my work life, too.
Help!

That's the problem with pred. You need ever increasing doses to control the pain and inflammation, but increased doses bring really unpleasant side effects.

Have you consulted a rheumatologist?

Predisone suppresses your CD4 count and obviously this is a problem for our kind. It will be good if some other solution can be found for you.

Cheers,

Hi,

I was only on Prednisone for two or three weeks , back in 2003.  I've also been on the equivalent of Mobec.  In the U.S. it's called Meloxicam. But not at the same time.  Never had any of the problems you describe. I am not on Meloxicam any more.

I really don't have any advice to offer, but I hope you can get this sorted out with your doctor.

What other meds are you currently on?

nothing other than Atripla.  Meloxicam is the brand prescribed to me.  I am not fond of having to take prednisone, either.

I hope I can get into a specialist soon to find out what is going on.   The bleeding has stopped, thankfully.

hi web,
meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug while prednisone is a steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. these two classes of drugs should never be taken concurrently due to the potential for inducing gi bleed, gi perforation and significant kidney overload. i imagine that each of the prescribing docs was unaware of what you were taking. you were wise to have stopped one or the other. perhaps speak with your doc about a short term rx of sucralfate to assist in healing your gi tract and as matty pointed out, a more appropriate regimen for the arthritis, which will likely be the meloxicam for reasons he discussed regarding pred's immunosupressive effects.

good luck.

Yep, I know what you mean. I was going through quite the mood swings while on prednisone. This was shortly before starting HAART.  The good thing is,  I put on at least 15 pounds of weight during that period under prednisone.  Couldn't stop eating !  But I really needed this weight back, after having lost 30 pounds.

Keep us updated as to whats going on.

Hello gang,  the pain was so intense today that I went to see my regular doctor and they have me on a topical non steroidal ointment and I am almost afraid to say that maybe it IS working.  I am keeping the Rheumatologist appointment, but I hope that this treatment brings me relief.  Keep your fingers crossed.

I got in a week early!  Arthritis doctor is very good.  I went out of work for 4 days to rest the tendons and it is helping.  The arthitis doctor gave me celebrex and that is big boost, too.  They took a bunch of blood-  who doesn't when it is us?- to check and see if they can determine what kind of arthritis I have.  So- bored and sitting at home with nothing to do but watch Match Game reruns all day.
Cheers.
