Washington Post Story on Child in HIV "Remission"
« on: July 24, 2017, 11:24:55 am »
As usual with the media, the actual news of the story is over-hyped and the copywriter writes a misleading headline contradicted by the story itself (the child is not virus "free"), nor is this a "cure," more of a "remission" or "functional" control of the virus.  Nonetheless, it is a Washington Post story, so will get significant play around the United States and U.S. media abroad.

From the July 24 edition of the Washington Post:

"A South African child, believed to have been infected with HIV around the time of birth, has remained free of the virus for 8 1/2 years after early treatment — renewing hope among scientists that such outliers may hold clues to help end the decades-old epidemic.

The case study, described by researchers before a presentation Monday at an international AIDS conference in Paris, suggests a paradigm shift in the treatment of those infected. It establishes that HIV may be controllable in some way other than a daily and lifelong regimen of antiretroviral drugs..."

Unfortunately the new has also been directly translated into turkish and it is being broadcasted in Turkish news as well.

Our people also cannot differentiate what the real science is and fake news. Now i have to explain what it is and have to break hopes again.

Any illness or virus or bactrim will have a few outliers. Does it help the rest of the population? Not necessarily and presuming it will lead to something is simply shortsighted or foolish. In the case of HIV this is not a new fact or a new phenomenon despite the headlines hyping it up.

We may learn something from such cases and perhaps something useful who know but as we have seen time and time again, pining false hope on such things is dangerous.

A lot of people have similar issues with news items and fact v fiction (or plain bullshit). At least the ones that misunderstand have company. Mr.Trump still struggles understanding real news and hence has alternative facts  ;D and so does most of the UK when it comes to news and the workings of the EU.

Unfortunately, the actually study paper presented at the conference says the same contradicting information. In one sentence it says that certain sensitive tests detected no viral DNA, but the previous sentence says her reservoir size is 2.2 copies /million PMBCs.
If the actual scientists are presenting information that can be construed as contradictory, the scientific laymen will get present it that way too.

This is just one patient from an entire study being done on infected infants. It doesn't seem too promising to me because only one person put of dozens had this response.

But if she'd been off meds for as long as they say and no no viral rebound, it sounds like a functional cure. It's not not promising for everyone.

My reservoir is smaller than hers and I have been declared functionally cured.

Its been a handful of infants and they always rebound, that is not saying in that group of patients something can not be learned, than again with mother to child infections being reduced to near nothing with care, hopefully it simply will not be needed  ;) On that note i think attention to getting the low number to 0 is better effort at this stage.

I however in the meantime have a reservoir and am not a child.
