I never expected such a landslide !!! When I voted for Barack at 1 PM here in heavily democratic Queens, New York City it only took 20 minutes, I expected it to take much longer and I wondered if there would be the groundswell of support nation wide I hoped for, but thankfully there was...And it looks like Democrats will have a filibuster proof Senate with 60 seats or more. Wall Street probably will be unhappy with this mandate, but that's tough on them, let them deal with it !!!
I hope Obama will fix this economy and that world peace will become the norm, not the exception.

New Mexico not only went from red to blue when it went for President-elect Barack Obama, we also gave the Republicans a kick in the butt and replaced Republican Pete Domenici with Democrat Tom Udall, plus maintained Udall's former House seat by electing Democrat Ben Lujan.
This means that both senators from New Mexico are now Democrats!!
I have high hopes the other two House seats will go to Democrats, but the counting is still going on.
I agree. McCain gave a very respectable and eloquent concession speech.
I can't wait to hear the President elect's acceptance speech!

PS = By the way, did you know that Virginia went for Obama? That's right, the former capital of the confederacy, which had not been won by a Democrat since Lyndon Johnson was elected more than 40 years ago, has cast its electoral votes for the first African-American to be elected president of the United States.

Clinton won by 370 in 1992. If Obama wins some more of the as yet uncalled states he will be in a similar position, as I suspect.

Democrats are currently at 57 Senate seats, with four left to call (MN, OR, AK, GA) MN looks possible as its tied, Oregon is tied, GA is very doubtful. Alaska has seen no votes tallied yet.
They will probably have a ~100 seat advantage in the House, though currently there are still 36 left to call.

The night before the election was the closest I've ever felt as an adult to having the childhood anticipation that defined Christmas Eve. I didn't describe it to anyone.
Then a friend who called plus a stranger at the poll each expressed how it felt so much like Christmas. It was so grand not being alone in such feelings.
And, now, to share in the unwrapping of the fine political present Obama is...talk about sharing one's toys!

A great, broad victory. The South has been breached. As someone who worked hard registering new voters I am disappointed about GA, but we came close....It appears that a Senate run off is coming as Chambliss is slightly below 50 percent at this time

This morning, I found out that what I hoped for was now a reality.
Not only did New Mexico back Barack Obama, but, for the first time ever. all three of our seats in the house are now Democrat.
The District 1 seat was created in 1968 and has always been Republican - until today! The District 2 seat, which covers the southern part of the state, hasn't had a Democrat in the seat for decades.
Till today!
I think I will just go outside and let out another victory yell. I scared the neighbors last night, so I may as well reprise myself this morning! ;D
Oh, by the way, its snowing here this morning.

That is the way we felt about the U.S. ! We'll stay in Arizona, even though the proposition to change the constitution to say "Marriage is defined as one man and one woman" passed, but not by much. The legal fight to change the constitution of the state, will now commence. I predict that the courts will throw it out, but who knows now that the national complexion has changed dramaticly. We may end up being one of the first republican states to endorse Gay Marriage if all goes well in the supreme court.

Highest turnout rate since '08 -- 1908: Provided the number stands, the turnout rate for yesterday's election was the highest in 100 years, according to the estimate from turnout guru Dr. Michael McDonald at George Mason University. Almost 137 million (136,631,825) went to the polls -- 64.1% of the voting-eligible population. 1960 saw 63.7% of the populace go out to vote; In 1908, 65.7% voted. It was, of course, the most people ever to go to the polls topping 2004's 122 million. That's 12% increase from 2004. For those wondering why the current total vote in the presidential adds up to approximately 117 million, note that it's going to climb. There is still a ton of vote missing on the West coast.

Agreed. Hopefully the final verdict will be officially Democrat. Mecklenberg voted 61% for Obama!
Happy as well that Dole is gone and by most measures, the Democrats have only strengthened their holdings in the NC legislative and judicial elections (going by an HRC guide to candidates)

Dont know how this ranks but any of you recall the FIRST time a woman was candidate for Vice Presidency? It was back in 84 - Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferarro. Regan won by a landslide getting 49 states. Mondale only got his home state (minnesota I think) and DC.

SteveA, to my knowledge that was the first time a US President mentioned the word gay in a victory speech. And to top it off, President-elect Obama mentioned gays in a positive inclusive way listing all Americans. I tell you, I am just too through. What a wonderful day!!!

Well I took it as a victory even though someone says Clinton did it first, but obviously it wasn't very memorable or I'd have heard more about it. I did google "Clintons Presidential Acceptance Speech" and found one and he did mention gays, but nowhere nearly in as positive a light as Obama did!

According to my best friend, who lives in Michigan, and read the whole law about medical marijuana (as it was posted on the wall in polling spots), it will be prescribed for people with hep C, HIV and cancer. The prescribees will obtain a "special" ID card and be allowed to grow and use up to 2 oz.

How could this be? What reason would voters in large numbers vote for McCain when they had previously voted for Kerry in 2004, especially when at least 80% of the rest of the counties in the U.S. had NO such movement to the right from their 2004 voting patterns.
Well, look at the map. It's a concentrated area -- a belt. Here's my take. Even though there are anti-black racists no matter where one lives, there are concentrations of white racists still remaining in our country, mostly in the Appalachia regions and Arkansas.
But I found the map heartening. Obviously, there were far more whites that voted for Obama BECAUSE he was black -- we WANTED to break that racial barrier for the benefit of our country. The great news about this map is how small the belt is. And it's how small the Republican party has become now with all their "real America" and "un-American" rhetoric.

I would think people voted for Obama because he was the better choice - I know that is why I voted for him.

This is the best looking presidential family we have ever had, and yes I am even comparing them to the likes of Barbara Bush ;). I really think, outside of the hardcore racists, that Obama will win over his detractors in time. I have never felt this much promise after any election. I am keeping my expectations realistic, I know it's going to be difficult, but if there is a man capable of instilling change in our country and rectifying this nations woes, it is Obama.

Sorry to derail the topic, but I can't help it even though I can't do the good stuff right now. I probably will never see this day in Florida. Having a nice little grow room that yields 2 ounces will always be a wet dream for me I fear. Just my opinion, but Marinol does very little for nausea.

N.C. whites boosted Obama
President-elect didn't have the same support from white voters in some other Southern states on Tuesday.
Barack Obama inspired massive turnout among African Americans in Mecklenburg County and throughout North Carolina.
But he also did significantly better with N.C. white voters than John Kerry did in 2004 – an improvement not seen in many other Southern states.
Obama won 35 percent of N.C. white voters, up from Kerry's 27 percent, according to exit polls cited by CNN. Obama also showed gains among white voters in South Carolina and Virginia.
But in the deep South – Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas – his white support dropped significantly.

Key to Obama victory in Florida: casting a wide net

Barack Obama won Florida by winning Tampa Bay. He won it by racking up a 140,000-vote margin in Miami-Dade and by winning Hispanic voters around Orlando. And he won Florida by siphoning votes out of Republican strongholds such as Escambia, Marion and Collier counties.
It was a well-funded, volunteer-driven campaign that refused to ignore any part of the state, and it turned a 381,000-vote Democratic loss in 2004 into a 200,000-vote win Tuesday.
Not only did Obama score big winning margins in some parts of Florida — nearly 85,000 more votes than John Kerry received in Orange County, 37,000 more in Pinellas — but he dramatically cut his losses in solidly Republican counties across the state. In Duval County, for instance, he mined 33,000 more votes than Kerry did.
"The lesson is you have to fight for every vote and keep your margins down in places where you're not going to win,'' said Miami lawyer Kirk Wagar, Obama's Florida finance chairman. "This is all about effort. No Democrat has ever done a field program like this, ever."
Indeed, Obama's expansive field operation was the talk of the campaign season in Florida. Sixty field offices. About 500 paid organizers. Tens of thousands of volunteers.
Does Tuesday mean Florida is now a blue state? Not really. It's as much a purple battleground as ever.
Despite a strong anti-Republican climate and the Obama juggernaut mobilizing voters, Florida Democrats netted only one more congressional seat and, at best, one more state House seat. Many Democrats had expected the party would pick up at least five House seats.
There was no Democratic tide in Florida. Obama had no strong coattails for local candidates, and on constitutional amendments, Floridians voted strongly to cut taxes, ban gay marriage and oppose tax increases for community colleges.
"I think we have momentum back on the Republican side," said House Speaker-designate Ray Sansom, R-Destin. "Florida is still very conservative."
Gov. Charlie Crist failed to deliver his state for McCain, and on Tuesday he issued a statement congratulating the president-elect.
"Now that the people of Florida and our nation have spoken, it is time for our nation to unite behind President-elect Obama with one purpose — to strengthen our economy and increase opportunity for all Americans," Crist's statement said.
While Republican losses could have been much worse in Florida, there are ominous signs for the GOP in Tuesday's results. Once-safe Republican counties such as Duval and Sarasota increasingly look competitive, and the 14 percent of the electorate that is Hispanic swung dramatically to the Democrat.
President Bush won Florida Hispanics by 12 percentage points in 2004. Obama started his Florida campaign late and had no history with Hispanics, but he won that group by 15 percentage points.
"This is the watershed election where you have seen a structural realignment of the Hispanic vote in Florida that will have an impact on statewide, national and local elections for a generation to come," said Fernand Amandi, vice president of Bendixen & Associates, which does polling for the Democratic Party.
"We have been saying this was going to happen for years, but now we can actually see it with quantifiable data,'' Amandi said. "As much as any other group, President-elect Obama owes his election to the Latino voters."
Non-Cuban Hispanic voters helped Obama overwhelmingly win Interstate 4 counties like Orange and Osceola.
And Amandi said his exit polling showed Obama actually won 65 percent of the Cuban-American vote in Miami-Dade, which would be dramatic shift. McCain won support from 75 percent of older Cubans, and Obama won support from 75 percent of younger Cubans, he said.
Half a million more voters turned out than in 2004, but contrary to expectations overall turnout was actually down a few points, to 71.5 percent, from 2004. African-Americans accounted for 13 percent of the electorate, up from 12 percent, but exits polls showed the percentage of voters 18-29 years old actually dropped slightly to 15 percent.

The voters in Tazewell County didn’t quite turn out in the numbers they did elsewhere, with only a bit more than 60 percent of the registered voters, 17,074, making it to the polls. Still, those voters maintained a trend similar to the rest of the region in giving strong backing to the Republican ticket of Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin. The McCain/Palin ticket received 65.57 percent of the Tazewell County vote, or 11,196, compared to the 32.75 percent received by Democratic challengers Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden. The Obama/Biden ticket recorded 5,592 votes.
In the race for the Senate seat vacated by longtime Republican John Warner, Tazewell County voters gave former Gov. Mark Warner, no relation, a 2,600-vote edge. The Democrat received 5957.44 percent of the vote, 9,190 , to Republican former Gov. Jim Gilmore’s 6,580, or 41.13 percent.
In the 9th District race, uncontested incumbent Rick Boucher, a Democrat, received 96.15 percent of the vote with 11,740. There were 470 write-ins in that race.
Results were obtained from the State Board of Elections Web site and are preliminary and must be certified.
