Phil D Finally Goes to the Optometrist
« on: February 15, 2012, 02:05:21 pm »
So, after almost 7 years, I finally made an appointment and went to the optometrist yesterday afternoon. Had the full exam done - including vision field test, dilation, etc.

No significant findings - I remain blind as a bat without glasses  8)
Of course, being 45, I now need progressive lenses.

I picked out some really cool looking Sean John frames. Good thing I started a flex spending account this year for health care expenses - between the appointment and the frames/lenses it came to $700.

Should have the new specs in about 10 days - this is a preview of what they look like; however, mine have smaller and more squared looking lenses - makes me look "dignified".... as soon as my actual ones arrive, I will grace you all with pics  ;D

In other news - which is further proof of why I am having difficulty mastering a smart phone these days.... after the vision field test, the opto-specialist wanted to see my glasses.... I searched near and far, on the counter and on the floor, on the chair, and everywhere..... only to be told after 10 minutes of searching that said glasses were located on my face......   OOPS!  Needless to say, everyone in the doctor's office had a little laugh off of that one. What can I say, I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree.

Why in the hell do you have to wait ten days?!?!?!  Jebus, what's going on down there?  Just joking, I'm sure they were special ordered from P. Diddy's warehouse or something... Phil, you're so gangsta!!

Glasses look good...  I remember when I got my first pair 4 years ago I immediately came home and sat on them.   They were Versace's and I was pretty pissed at myself...

Oh Phil...LOL on the glasses being on your face, we have all searched high and low for our eyeglasses only to find them on our head.  Was it the optometrist who dilated your eyes or an opthamologist, as the latter usually dilates the eyes and runs tests the optician might not do...Anyway be well and see you in DC this summer!

I had my vision checked two weeks ago to renew my contact prescription and he fitted me with a new kind of lens that have lines in them . I can read and work on the computer for the first time in 10 years without reaching for readers ... I'm loving it ,

I was about the same age, when I needed my first pair of permanent glasses, so I started right off with the progressive lenses. At that time, I just needed the minimal correction for reading and distance.  I didn't want to have the lines, They may take a couple days to get used to them, but I like them.

Yeah - doc and others told me that the progressives will take a few days to get used to, they are actually like three segments/lines - they said it will seem like the ground is coming up at me.

They said I have some bad astigmatism - I have been wearing glasses since 5th grade. Lasik isn't really an option. Contacts would also be costly and doc said that given the severity of astigmatism I have, that just a slight shift in the contact would cause extreme blurriness - which would not be good, particularly when driving on I-95.

The glasses I am getting are ultra-light, have the glare and scratch protection, and ultra-thin lenses. Should be cool.  We shall see (pardon the pun).

Cool specs!  I couldn't believe the cost of glasses at a brick and mortar store after my last vision issues.  $700 and they weren't even no-lines.  I found a place on-line and have had great results with them.  All you need is your vision prescription and you can order from the following link.  You can upload a pic to the site and do virtual try ons.  I've ordered numerous pairs and have been quite satisfied.  My last pair of no-line progressive/transition lenses were only $150 and I like them a heck of a lot more than the expensive ones.
