Relocation
« on: June 19, 2013, 04:53:17 pm »
Next month, I will be relocating to SoCal.  As much as I like the South and this part of NC, it's time for a change.  I've been in this same city for 29 years - since I was 18!

There's a lot that I'm looking forward to, but still, I can't help be sad about leaving at the same time.  I'm leaving friends and family behind.  I'm leaving our house of 22 years that I really like.  I'm leaving a fairly comfortable existence.  Still, there are things lacking here, and there are things that I really don't like or have come to dislike - heat, cold, humidity, mosquitoes, and my job.  The recent passing of Amendment One and our current Republican-controlled General Assembly have both changed my opinion of what I once considered the standout state of the South.

Here's to adventure.  Still, I'm left wondering; should I keep my user name here as David_NC or update it to David_CA?  ;)

Change can be good!.  Please let us know how things go for you.

I think once you move, you should change your name, and your avatar. ;)

All the best on the move and new adventure.  Did you get a job offer, or did you just pick California as a place to relocate?  Do you know anyone there, or will you be starting from scratch meeting new friends?

Thanks for the well-wishes, guys!  It's definitely going to be an adventure both in the adjustment and the actual drive out.

I've also been thinking of relocating away from NC. I like David_CA.

It's really is a big move for us, but it's one we've been thinking about for quite a few years.  Do you have any ideas where are you thinking about relocating?

David_CA does have a nice ring to it!  ;)

All the best on the move and new adventure.  Did you get a job offer, or did you just pick California as a place to relocate?  Do you know anyone there, or will you be starting from scratch meeting new friends?

Job stuff is in the works.  We picked a place that we wanted to live; if one's going to do a major move, it should be to a place where one wants to live, and we chose CA for a variety of reasons.  We do have a few friends there, which will make it a lot easier.

It's really is a big move for us, but it's one we've been thinking about for quite a few years.  Do you have any ideas where are you thinking about relocating?

My partner's parents live in Palos Verdes we have discussed moving back to the South Bay because they are in their 70s. We rented in El Segundo and Hawthorne before and I would love to live in El Segundo again but purchasing a home is so expensive, like $700,000 and up for a small house. Every time I look at real estate prices in Los Angeles I become very discouraged. I enjoy traveling and don't want to be house poor.

I recently spent a week in Denver and loved it. In Denver we can afford a nice house, my LPC license will easily transfer (unlike CA) and my partner's employer, United Airlines, has a major base. It has over 300 sunny days per year, similar to SoCal.

I don't know if a move will happen because we are very settled in Greensboro, my brothers live here, I've worked at the same place for 19 years, etc. I am vicariously excited by your moved to SoCal, David. It really is a great place to live, especially if you love the outdoors.

YEAH what's going on there? You're practically married. Does she cook? I hear Paula Deen's not welcome in Hollywood anymore. And Will, your Bonnie lies over the ocean LOL

In all seriousness, I'm envious that you made the decision, and envious of your confidence, and just plain JELOUS that you have this opportunity! But good on you. You deserve it.

Actually, home prices are still way down in the LA area compared to a few years ago.  Of course, we'll be downsizing a bit, which is OK.  We're both pretty much over yard work, house maintenance, etc.  I've been in this city for almost 30 years, and hubby's been here almost as long.  I don't see such a move being any easier as we get older, and I'd like to do it while real estate is still down.

Good luck! Southern CA is a big place -- where in particular are you looking to relocate?
Starting in OC due to the opportunity I have there, but who knows exactly where we'll end up... we may stay in OC, perhaps in / near LA, maybe even San Diego.  It's nice, in a way, to not be already tied to a particular area, as it'll allow us to figure out exactly which place we like best.

Thanks.  I've been envious for years of those who've made such moves.  My HIV diagnosis certainly didn't do anything to help my feelings of mobility.  Finally realizing that it's an obstacle, but not a roadblock, gave me the freedom to actually consider such a move.  With proper planning and a favorable set of circumstances, it's definitely doable.  Really despising my job with few opportunities in the area is certainly a motivation!

We're doing our best to get Bonnie out there, too.  I don't imagine that D and I will be the only two of our group to head west!

Actually, home prices are still way down in the LA area compared to a few years ago.

Mortgage rates are still low and not being tied to a specific city will give you a lot of options. You should be able to find a deal. If you are open to foreclosures, short sales and renovation you could end up with a good investment.

I have been absent from the forums for awhile now, and have missed this entirely!  Did not know you guys were moving until I saw you 'traveling' across the USA on facebook.

Best of luck to you!  I totally agree, best to do it now, rather than wait until you get any older.  Youth is DEFINITELY a plus when you're moving cross country.  I did it in 1981...young, poor, and had nothing to lose and everything to gain.  I can't imagine doing it now at 56.

Best of luck to you guys, and I'll be following you on F.B.

HUGS, Alan
