a study on neurocognitive 'impairment'
« on: December 14, 2019, 03:30:17 am »
https://www.catie.ca/en/catienews/2019-12-05/exploring-impact-aging-brains-hiv-positive-and-hiv-negative-people I had a bit of a laugh at this 'neurocognive impairment' that for the majority was symptom free.

Apparently you can be impaired without being impaired.

Hi Harley,

link is not working.

Or they mean the affected subjects don’t acknowledge the impairment?.... which would be even worst in a way...  ;D

Here is the link. Not really seeing much new out of the study.

https://www.catie.ca/en/catienews/2019-12-05/exploring-impact-aging-brains-hiv-positive-and-hiv-negative-people

" The good news is that in most cases of neurocognitive impairment in HIV-positive people who have an undetectable viral load thanks to ART, individuals are usually symptom free or experience only minor impairment. What’s more, studies have found that HIV-related dementia is relatively rare in Canada and other high-income countries in people who maintain an undetectable viral load."

"The scientists found that about 36% of the HIV-positive participants and 24% of the HIV-negative participants had some degree of neurocognitive impairment. After taking many factors into account in their statistical analysis, they found that HIV infection was associated with an increased risk of neurocognitive impairment. However, the vast majority of people with such neurocognitive impairment were either symptom-free (asymptomatic) or had mostly mild symptoms."

Well... to their measurements, forgetting where you put your keys once in a while could indicate mild cognitive impairment I suppose.. that means I had it in my teen years long before HIV. As Jim says nothing new, but in general it confirms other studies and also confirms the efficacy of treatment today. Happy news.

I did miss something or not follow a link? I didn't actually read anywhere how these studies measured the neurocognitive decline. I would imagine the standard neurocognitive tests used and would rule out occasional normal forgetfulness.

Apparently you can be impaired without being impaired.

HIV-related dementia
i would have rather seen that one listed as "Advanced HIV-related" or, as it used to be called , "AIDS-related" (which really is a sad and terrible thing to behold)

Have you guys ever had a cog screening? I have as a requirement to try to stay employed.  There exhausting.  The doc I saw was in the very early studies where advanced infection and older control drugs were a major factor.  He told me they truely did see long term impairment with the early survivors.  Anymore he's told me it's almost a nonfactor.  The rare cases of neurological impairment he sees today usually have another likely cause.  Long term drug use, ect.

Just the same I cheer on new studies.  The more of them the more likely I'll have one less battery of testing from this damn able infection.
