Stopped atripla after 2 nights
« on: September 06, 2008, 04:02:02 pm »
Even though my doctor told me that treatment was optional for acute infection (I had symptoms of conversion one month ago), I chose to go ahead and start treatment in case it would delay the progression of the disease.  I started Atripla 2 nights ago, but couldn't deal with the side effects.  The first night wasn't so bad.  I was drunk and loopy during the sleep, but woke up very tired/ fatigue the next day.  However, the second night, I had tingling/ numbness going all over my body, including my balls (ha), and difficulty breathing.  After that, I woke up with insomnia and was wired with fast heartbeat, tightness in the chest the rest of the day.  The difficulty breathing scared the crap out of me.  I called the doctor and he said that I could stop treatment.  Now, instead of trying a different combination, I am going to see how long I can go without taking any meds.  There is no conclusive proof that early treatment gives any benefit anyway.  I just hope that I haven't gotten any resistance to any class of drugs after taking 2 pills of Atripla.  My vrial load was 720,000 and CD4 was 510 at the time of diagnosis.

Wow, sorry you had such an experience. Hope this brief foray did not cause resistance.

Hello Poz,

Welcome to the site. I couldn't begin to give you any advice on your comment above. I just don't know the answer to that.  What does your doctor have to say about it. Make sure to ask him. He can always order a resistance test for you.

My boyfriend actually took sustiva+combivir for nearly a month and stopped treatment..  Since then he hasn't become resistant at all (that was 3 years ago).  I'm sure it varies from person to person, but don't worry.. chances are your not going to be resistant after just 2 days

Sorry to hear of this reaction.
I dunno, just think there is some missing info. You "called" your doc and he said stop. OK. But isn't a trip to see him/her in order, and explore a bit the causes and results (if any are knowable) of this aborted experience?
Was that alergic reaction. Perhaps it was stress related?  I kindly suggest you dig deeper.
And here's hoping you do fine without meds for a long time.  In normal seroconversion, your viral loads should be dropping soon, I think.

These are the same symptoms I went through when starting Sustiva in 2002.  Yes, I got the numbness and warm feeling down below, although I don't have balls.   :P  I found that taking it an hour before bed made the timing just right.  I would be dozing when the strongest effects happened, the loopy-loo and all.  It only lasted about an hour for the nights that I was awake during it.

Sorry it didn't work out for you this go-round.  Hang in there.

Yea! SAME experience here! It made me soooooo loopy!

Luckily my Doc today let me go back on Combivir! Viramune/Combivir is an older regimen, but it seemed to work for me without side effects!

I was on Combivir/Viramune 2000-2006

Atripla for 2 weeks

Truvada//Viramune 2006-2008

Epzicom/Viramune 2008 (2 weeks) had HORRIBLE wanted to stay in bed and cry all day fatigue!!!!

Now back on Combivir/Viramune as of TODAY!

I am so excited!
