Some help please. What is BED Assay?

Don't know if it's the right place to put this, but here goes:

I just have my first blood draw this morning - nothing dramatic as I know the place and people there well as a caregiver (the dramatic effort of being a patient is of course something else). All things went well and I can expect the results and another appointment with my doctor (best in the field! I am happy to get Doctor Li) in a week or so.

By the end of the consultation the doctor informed me that they have start a test on HIVers that they are rather surely who are, like me, recently infected - it is called BED Assay. He explained to me that it's for the measurement of HIV incdience in a population but then it got to a point of his explanation that I became totally lost.

So is this test only serves a statistic gathering and search purpose? I wouldn't mind but would appreciate if someone can tell me more about it.

Hi Shaun,

After a Google session, it looks like a BED assay is a method by which they can tell if you are dealing with a recent infection, or an old one. It seems it's being used for epidemiological purposes - so they can see how much hiv is increasing in the population currently.

For example, for someone who is newly diagnosed but has actually been infected for several years, their infection date belongs to a previous year and a previous years data. However, if it can be proven that the infection is new, then they know that infection represents data for the current year.

It's just a more sophisticated method of tracking whether or not prevention campaigns are making headway - at least that's what it looks like to me.

I thought the same. They have also put me in a data collecting group of HIVers from several South/South East countries (including Australia) called TreatAsia, which my clinic just joined, so maybe that's why they are doing the BED Assay on me.

Again, talk about being constantly educated.

BTW, when the doctor said "BED Assay test", I heard "BAD Essay test". ;D
