tablet?
« on: September 17, 2013, 11:31:33 pm »
My dad is getting me a tablet for Christmas, all I have to do is pick it out.

I know less about those things than computers.

What kind do you guys have, recommend, why and why not.

Since you will ask,:
I will be using it mostly for school.  I'll take it to school instead of my laptop.  It has to be easy to figure out and if I can connect my digital camera to it that's even better.  Can you keep pictures on it?

Can you take notes on them like on paper?

Music would be nice to. (I couldn't figure out how how to put music on that music thing and I gave it away).  I've never read a book on anything like them so I don't know which is better for books.

If I get a Nook one what happens if Barnes and Noble ever closes?

Can I watch TV on it?  I don't like watching tv on my computer because it keeps freezing, but it would be nice to watch SOA episodes that I missed.

iPad.

It's pricey but it does everything you said you want to do without having to worry much about computery things. You could also go for the mini to save space/money if screensize isn't that important.

- easy to figure out, check
- keep pictures on it, check, you can also just keep them in the cloud and access as needed
- notes, check, there are a million handwriting apps or you could just use the on screen keyboard to type them in. It's tricky at first, but you get used to it.
- music, check, it's basically a big iPod, but you could also do Pandora, Spotify, etc.
- books, check, I find it comfortable to read on, but not everyone likes it
- tv, most things you can watch on a computer can also be watched on an iPad (Netflix, Hulu, YouTube), though some items are not licensed for viewing on mobile apps (less and less, I think)
- I don't know about syncing your camera to it, but you can probably sync them both up to the same photo library, so same difference.

A Nook is primarily an e-Reader and doesn't have the vast ecosystem of apps, etc. that an iPad has. Also: http://news.yahoo.com/nook-death-rattle-132539092.html

NOTE: I still have the first one, and even though it's a bit slow and unable to take the latest operating system, it still works perfectly.

Lee, is there a reason that you don't think either a Google Nexus 7 ($229) or a Galaxy Tab 3 ($200) can't do those same things?

And if she wants something that uses a stylus for note taking the Galaxy Note 8.0 has a stylus, but it's $370 and its specs actually outperform the current iPad, both in terms of screen, processor and RAM.

I don't see the point of fussing with connecting a digital camera when these tablets have cameras built in, but if that is really important to you then go to a store selling these and  take in your camera you want to use with it and see if it works.

Personally if my primary need was school and note taking I wouldn't bother with writing technology-based stylus in the first place, I would just type my notes and I'd probably prefer an extra light laptop.

You may also want to check out Surface tablets. They runs Windows, have a keyboard, a USB port for connecting your camera and, depending on which model, a stylus for taking notes and Microsoft Office is included. Microsoft is announcing Surface 2 September 23 so if you are interested you will want to wait to see what the new models offer.

Nope, I'm sure they're quite nice. I've only owned the iPad, though, so it's all I can speak to.

I agree about the light laptop. I don't think I'd want a tablet as my main school machine.

If you are a student, get a small cheap light thingy (computer) that has a keyboard. I am a teacher and we require all students to have wifi thingies. Nobody uses a tablet. They use laptops or in a pinch, smartphones.  This must say something about the ergonomics and utility of a tablet in school.

That said, you can buy a bluetooth keyboard and couple it with an iPad so I assume one can do it with these other tablets. If the OP is going the tablet route for school then I'd definitely consider that.

I should also add that you need to look at the Google Nexus 10. It's the priciest Android non-iPad but the most feature full.

In fact, you should just spend a couple hours reading the reviews of things recommended below on CNET or some similar tech site.

And as far as price goes, if you are wanting to do as much on a tablet as you initially described, you're going to want to bump up the storage capacity when you order one, so figure that into the expected price. Don't just accept the standard 16 GB model.

You don't need all that hard drive space if you don't store things locally. All of my files live elsewhere, not on any device.

Well, I still have all those questionable 90s CDs burned to hard drive, but they're also stored online, so keeping them just a bad habit.

If you're thinking about getting something for school, then you're definitely going to need something 1) with a USB port, and 2) is readily compatible with the school's computer system.

The new hybrid touch screen laptops are the best of both worlds, and the prices are surprisingly in line with what average laptops and tablets with comparable features and capabilities will run you.

As far as Nook/Kindle type tablets go, though... they're more for entertainment than productivity. I really can't see any practical purpose for them in the classroom.

I have a surface pro that I use mainly for work since it has word and excel and syncs with the work system seamlessly.  I have an ipad 2 from a couple years back.

The Surface pro really kicks the ipads ass

although it's really how you use it. only you can decide what you need. the iPad is easy to use.

I bought a Lenovo Yoga.  It's the one where the monitor folds all the way over the "other" direction so you can use it as a tablet.  I really like having the option of using it either as a tablet or a laptop.

My other laptop finally died so I'm using that one fulltime now.

Rumor mill is forecasting October 15th for Apple revealing the new iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 to the public.

Keep in mind that there is a major operating system upgrade, iOS 7, just released to the public today, and Apple didn't just tinker at the edges with this one from what I've read. Personally with Apple the premium you pay with their products is the operating system.

My iphone updated this morning. Meh.... Itunes is not as pretty.... Flat isn't better. I loved the 3d look of the old music browser and furthermore, the pics are not full screen anymore.  Flat.  Lotta hype...

I've been waiting for the iPhone to go flat for at least 2 years... Finally no more bleeding eye sockets every time I look at my phone. It's not just design. All that visual noise affected usability and spread from Apple down to every single developer.

However, I haven't updated my phone yet...

What I really want now is contextual settings - I need completely different settings for different locations/tasks. It would be easy to implement having this happen automatically.

thanx guys

@ Miss P--I didn't know tablets had cameras in them, I like that. :)

@ Habersham and willie-- I ain't getting nothing from a Philly airport bathroom, I only go to the Baltimore airport ;)

I will have to look at that websight you suggested Miss P.  I looked on Consumer Reports but they made it more confusing.

@ Meech--Most of my professors allow tablets but not laptops, something about the sound of the keys.  I'm trying to avoid having to carry my laptop to school, it's heavy and bulky in my backtop. Sometimes it's hard to find a school computer that isn't being used.  They are cutting down on adding computers because so many students bring their own.

One of the girls in my biology class has an IPad and she likes it, but she also admitted it's the only tablet she has used.

As far as reading, I think I'm old fashioned and like how a book feels.

I will write down all the names and check them all out.

To make it harder daddy then said I have my choice between a tablet and a new digital camera. I'm one of the photographers for the school newspaper so he thought I might want a new camera that sends pictures right to an email address.

The high quality cameras on tablets are ideal for posting to the net where it be stills or video .

If I had a choice between the gift of a digital cam or a notebook or tablet I would choose the notebook or tablet and go by my own digital camera , a decent digital camera can be bought inexpensively compared to a tablet .

This.  Digital camera manufacturers are aggressively cutting prices.  Their sales are down because, for many people, the camera on their phone or tablet is quite sufficient for their needs.
