Live To 100
« on: July 05, 2010, 02:37:22 am »
From "Nightline":

A study about people who live to be 100 and older.  It mostly has to do with genetics as believed.  I was wondering where to put this story.  This forum seems like it should be reserved for things directly related to HIV.  However, I think there are things we can learn from this study.  It isn't breaking news.  Most of it are things we already know about.  The biggest things besides genetics are having a sense of purpose and community.  Researchers also are finding that reduced caloric intake slows aging.  It was interesting that 1 in 6,000 Americans will live to be 100.  Having HIV, I'm just hoping for at least 60.  However, we are told all the time now that we should live an almost normal life span.  So, I think the info about a sense of purpose and community is something that I will try to have more of.  And, maybe I need to cut out the ice-cream.

Do people even still want to live that long? Probably all wrinkly, and sickly, and dependent and 100000 medical problems. I think im gonna call it quits around 80 =)

just because you live to 100 (or close to it), doesn't mean you'll be sickly, dependent, and have so many medical problems. ;)

my grandmother turns 93 next month. She's lived alone and taken care of the house since my grandfather passed away with alzheimers about a decade ago - and she still drives! (A sight better than my mom does, that's for sure. ;) )

Nana's mom lived to 99. She finally had to leave her home for a nursing home at 98 when she had accidentally stabbed her foot with a pitchfork (the 3rd time in 5 yrs) and fell down breaking her hip (for the second time).

It's those genetics that I "blame" for having outlived teh aids for 20 yrs (so far ;)) and actually getting more healthy over the last 5 yrs.

ahhh, Mech! German Grannies rock! My German great granny lived to 101, my granny lived to 85, Alzeheimers took her, but without that she was healthy as a horse and prob would ahve lived to 100.

Me, I'm gonna throw in the towel round 75ish. Ill be happy with that. But maybe my Good German Stock genes will allow me a bit longer HIV or not.

I was talking to my psychiatric about how long I expected to live with HIV, and I told him maybe 25 years. And he told me wrong, you can drop dead right now after you leave. No one knows that.

He added you plan with no limits , but expect the unexpected anytime, just like everyone else.

My mother is 93 years old, everybody she knows is long gone, just the children she had ( 7) and their lives keep her going .

Just remember the story of Dorian Gray, and what happend to him.

You're not already dead or do you mean you're already 75.  I'm willing to believe either.

My psychic ability is telling me that we will soon hear (read) --- "You are dead to me..."   If I'm right, I could possibly get my own spot on the Psychic Friends Network....which I will have until I reach 100 years old (needed to keep it on topic)  ;)

well, i still haven't been able to find the Cheerwine Krispy Kreme doughnuts (pictured in another thread) anywhere; but I did have a coupon to "buy a doz, get a doz" from the last time I got doughnuts

So we went to visit Nana this evening, who just happens to live near a KK in Charlotte. Killing two birds with one stone, we saw Nana AND got KK doughnuts.

And what does Nana tell me tonite while eating HOT glazed doughnuts and looking at my tattoos? She wants a tattoo! A tramp stamp no less. :o ;D And Mom wants a 4-leaf clover tatted on her ankle or wrist. I'm hoping to finagle another tat for myself when I take the ladies to get theirs. ROFLMAO

Living to 100 doesn't sound so bad if I'll still be eating Krispy Kreme doughnuts and getting tattoes in my 90s ;D

I saw that Cheerwine cola in either VA or West VA.  I had never heard of it before.  I believe it was West VA.  We got off at that exit to what was the secret bunker for Congress under that country club.  We stopped at some gas station there and saw it.

Gran Gran lived to be 100 (plus 8 months) on my maternal side, and my great grandmother (paternal) also lived to be 100.  Hence I expect to live to be 105, even with teh AIDS.

Things aren't looking good for me.  My oldest living grandparent died at 70.  The rest of them died in their 30's and 40's.  My father had 4 massive heart attacts at 40.  I'll be turning 30 this year.  My genes are already fucked up!
