Anyone Flying into Oakland for AGM 07 ?
« on: May 05, 2007, 02:15:54 am »
I've been checking on airfare from St. Louis and it looks like the fares into Oakland are much more reasonable for me.  It looks like they have a bus that goes to the Bart line and from there I could just go down to Powell and the hotel.  But it looks like most everyone else is flying into SFO?  Am I missing something or should Oakland work about as well as SFO?

Blixer (David),

I pretty much exclusively fly out of Oakland Airport (on Southwest Airlines).  With Southwest by far the dominant airline at Oakland, prices have historically been lower at this airport, as compared to SFO.  It is very simple to take AirBart ~~~~> BART into San Francisco.

The AirBART bus stop is well marked in front of both Terminals at Oakland, and is a relatively painless 10 or so minute ride to the Coliseum/Oakland Airport BART station.  It costs $3, exact cash only, for the bus ride.  Of course you have to buy a ticket to SF once inside the station, but after that's done just step on any train with "San Francisco" in the name.

BTW, Oakland Airport is nearly the same distance from Powell Street as San Francisco International.....feel free to PM me if you need any info.

David,

Check www.sidestep.com for prices.  The ones I got were comparable to, or cheaper, for SFO.  I'm looking forward to seeing you there, whichever airport you fly into!

hi bix.

what John (OSO)  said about OAK is spot on.  It is traditionally the cheaper airport although when I've been looking at fares I'm surprised the cheaper fares are at SFO.  If the fares are about the same, then I would pick Oakland. It's a nice, moderately sized airport (SFO is gargantuan!).  Easy to get around in.  It's just a few steps from the gates to the front door.  Catch the BART (BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT) to SF (Powell St. Station) and you'll be there in no time. (There is a bus from the airport to the BART station, like a 10 minute ride).  It's exciting.  You'll be taking BART under SF Bay (imagine commuting with the fishes.  For you land-lubbers this is a rare opportunity you can't afford to pass up and just one more reason to attend AMG).  The Powell St. station is like the 3rd stop once you've crossed the Bay.

Thanks for the info guys.  I'll check out the links you passed on.  I thought it looked like about the same distance to Powell St. from either airport.  And Oakland seemed to be a decent choice.  Everyplace I've looked the flights into there are about $100 cheaper out of St. Louis.  Yes, I'm sure it is because of Southwest.  It is so nice to have some competition.  LOL  I'm going to do a bit more looking and hope to commit to coming by the end of the weekend.

On a kind of related note...

I am on a United flight leaving at 8:00 am from ATL and arriving at 10:30 am SF time.

Wow.  It's only a 2 and a half hour flight to get there, but it takes like 5 or 6 to get back.  Wonder why that flight is so slow?

mrt....well it's also a 5+ hour flight on the outbound.  Remember there is a time change.  You leave ATL at 8A ATL time and arrive SFO 10:30 SF time but it's really 1:30p ATL time (3 hour time change) so that's 5 1/2 hours.  It's a non-stop flight.  On your return, UA doesn't have a non-stop flight so you have to go through IAH (WAshington Dulles) and change planes.

If you're still not clear with all of this, read Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five, about the fire bombing of Dredson.  He's got a great take on time travel.

Tim,
I believe that it's due to the fact that you'll be flying against the jet stream on your return flight.  It's sorta like flying 'up-stream'.  That, and the Coriolis Effect make the flight longer.

NO, silly.  it's because of the time changes across the continent.

:)

The coriolis effect doesn't cause much problem with travel, except around the equator... oh, and it also makes the water go down the toilet in the same direction each time.  YAY!  :)

Joseph, I HOPE you didn't think I was serious!  I was trying to make it sound as BS'ish as possible while still sounding like I knew what I was talking about!   ;D

As to the Coriolis Effect, it causes the water in the toilet to go down one direction in the Northern Hemisphere and the other direction in the Southern Hemisphere.  My question is what direction does the water go down if the toilet is located directly on the equator?

LOL... THAT is exactly what I was wondering as I was scrubbing....  maybe all the toilets directly on the equator are clogged. LOL

Ok, I had found a flight and just as I was about to make my reservation it suddenly dawned on me that Sept. 13 is the date of the monthly school board meeting that I'm expected to be at... soo...   now I'm on hold until this month's board meeting when I can find out if they will reschedule the Sept. Meeting or allow me to miss the meeting.  My board meetings are almost always the 2nd Thursday of the month but my secretary hadn't put next year's meetings on my calendar when I blocked out the AGM dates.  I hate it when this happens.  But I still haven't given up.....
