CBS News Story On HIV In Florida
« on: August 15, 2015, 01:20:49 am »
We discussed this here recently, about infection rates increasing in Florida and elsewhere, as hook up sites have gotten more and more popular.

This piece, which aired tonight, looks at the numbers.  Florida had over 5,000 infections in 2013-- the most of any state.  A doctor interviewed said most of those are ages 13-24.  He said many come in thinking this is no big deal, until they learn more about their health.  They say 60% of these young people don't know they are infected and are unknowingly infecting others.

The doctor says another group with increasing infections are men over 50.  He believes they went through their life getting tested and testing neg, but then the "midlife crisis" point led them to have much more sex and not worrying as much about infection.

I have read infections are down in almost every group, except MSM and especially young MSM, where the numbers are increasing.  As I understand it, private employer plans and those bought through exchanges have to cover birth control, with no co-pay.  I think PrEP needs to have that, too.  I know it is expensive, but it is very expensive to treat HIV.

I saw this yesterday on the 6:30 news and although they did a good job with this resort they missed mentioning that other groups are also affected in the state, African Americans, Hispanics, women, transwomen and intravenous drug users.. There has even been a push for needle exchange in Miami.. I just get mad that they miss the opportunity to educate many viewers.
