A royal pain in the. . . . . . .
« on: December 18, 2006, 03:24:10 pm »
I've been having problems with my lower back for many months now.  I was never really in "pain" as much as I was uncomfortable sometimes.  Depending on how I moved, sat, or was laying the discomfort would either be there or not.

I suspected I had done something at the gym, either leg presses or ab crunches (I use one of those big inflated balls).

Anyway my doctor has had me doing Yoga stretches and using Aleve, which has brought me relief.

That was until last week.  Suddenly things got much worse.  The only time I'm comfortable is if I stand.  I'm dragging my left foot somewhat, the pain seems centered on the left side of my spine and travels down into my hip and around to my groin.  I can't sleep for more than 1 or 2 hours before I have to get out of bed because I hurt and can't get in a comfortable position.  Getting out of bed is itself an ordeal.  I have to slowly slide to the edge, lay on my right side and then shift out of bed.

This morning I went to the doctor.  3 of em actually came in and had a look see.  They are thinking some sort of Lumbar disease I think, not sure what.

Have an MRI scheduled for Friday at noon.  We'll know more then.

Anyone have any insight into lower back pain?  Anyone know anything about this thing called Lumbar disease?

I hate this stuff!

Hey Rab,

Sorry to hear about the back problems I pulled a muscle in my back a while back the pain really is like no other.  My uncle has serious lower back problems he has something called Ankylosing Spondylitis although after reading your symptoms it doesn't sound like the same problem at all.  He is on a worldwide clinical trial at the moment for a new treatment he said it has literally transformed his life.  Having had a quick read up on Lumbar Disease now it certainly sounds quite treatable.  I've got my fingers crossed it isnt anything too serious, keep us updated.

OUCH! Rocky, I have found acupuncture to be very helpful with a variety of problems including back and leg related stuff.

See if there is a training school near you. I go to one here in NY where the advanced students are great and the cost is modest. And best of all, it works.

Also, have you tried a heating pad with a damp towel wrapped around it. Damp heat can be very helpful.

Cheers,

Rocky, my sister just had her neck fused 5 or 6 weeks ago because of herniated discs and two years ago she had a herniated disc repaired. You may never know what was the cause. I know it hurt like a mother.

Sorry to hear about all the pain.  I haven't had this, but a friend did.  Have you tried putting heat and ice on the area, when you have stiff or sore muscles?  I think my friend ended up getting steriod injections in his back.  This helped a lot (I guess it cuts down on the inflammation in the area).   Let's us know how the MRI goes...

RAB -
Had similar prob 5 years back - was a herniated lumbar disc.  Had it trimmed and felt immediately better.  not everyone gets easy relief from back surgery, but you're in good shape and trim - if that's what it is, it's one solution.  I hope you feel better soon.

RAB, as you are hearing- and I am sorry that you have this problem- the options are going to be all over the map with great theories.  Much as it will be prolonging the pain, try to let anyone give you an option and then allow yourself time (and more pain) to go with the one or ones which make the most sense to you, including WHY they think that such and such has caused the problem.  My brother had the disk problem.  My father, at age 78, had a disk related problem for which he went to a chiropractor to work on (with your problems sitting, lying in bed, etc.)  I have been a masseur.  I know of people who swear by acupuncture.  And the list goes on and on.  Win

Oh goodness. Will be thinking of your MRI Friday. Hope they can pinpoint exactly what's up, but if not, here are 2 links for possible discussion with your hcp's - I think it might be new and a little controversial:

Hello Rab,

Sorry to hear that you are going through a difficult time. I must admit, that when I was first reading your symptoms, it reminded me so much of the first case of shingles that I had back in 1989. The pain was unbearable in the back and throughtout the legs and hips. The entire episode came on and lasted at least three weeks. Barely able to roll out of bed, and walk. But I am sure the doctors have ruled that out for you. I haven't really had any real issues with back pain, at least none of which could be taken care of with Heat, advil, or aleve. Let us know how things are going, Wishing you the best this coming Friday.

Hi
I recently went through the same thing.  Dragging foot and all.
Swollen disc in lower back..injured it by lifting too much.
Pinched nerve.
Cold compresses...I iced it good. I actually SAT on ice packs.
Lots of pain killers.
Then accupuncture, like Andy said : it works, and stretching exercises. and more accupuncture and more exercises.  Lie on the floor on ur back with your knees at a 90 degree angle and feet on the floor and lift legs holding them in that [position. repeat 20 times . do this once a day.
I am fine now. But it took 3 months to heal up.
Patience!!!!!!
I hope your MRI is good news!

Oh Rocky, I am so sorry to hear you are in pain, you are such a dear and sweet man, not that I wish pain on anyone...All the advice here from those who have had back issues is great to consider, the lower back is so touchy...While I don't have back problems every once in a while the lower back seems to stiffen.  I know you have been stressed lately from all the rainy weather and your house taking a hit from it, stress can cause all kinds of nasty things...Hope it goes away real soon and you're all better !!!

Andy gave the same pitch I'm giving:  Acupuncture.

It is THE DEAL.

Find out more from your doctor and see if it might be a helpful option.  If not for this specifically, it can (and does) work wonders for all kinds of ughs and ouches.  At least it has for me.

I hope the MRI gives you some answers, and it's something the docs can fix quick.

Hey Rocky...

Sorry to hear about your situation. It may be a pinched nerve of some sort. In the meantime while you are waiting to go to the Doctor on Friday, take it easy and do not make any sudden moves. This had happened to one of my friends out in Phoenix when were were moving a rather large entertainment unit and he pulled a muscle and pinched a nerve at the same time. Just sharing. He even got a doctor's note for our work because he could not sit down in the chairs at the office.

Just take it easy OK?

Bear, I don't think Rocky needs help with holding his legs and feet in the air. He already has the red warning lights for aircraft, placed on his heals.  ;)

I hope the MRI discloses something that doesn't require back surgery.  Can you picture Jake doing yoga?   I can't.  But if it works for him it just might do the trick for you.  Along with Andy's acupuncture.  At my first ASO in Fremont, they had an acupuncturist on call who would give therapy for next to nothing.

You sure it's not all the rain that's causing this problem?  Deluge, flooded basements, front porches falling away...sounds like a recipe for a royal pain the butt.

Oh no Rocky!  Back pain is a pain in the ass.  After I got home from Montreal I started rehearsing for the theme park I was workin' at and the week before we opened I hurt my lower back lifting a girl.

I'll keep my fingers crossed and send you happy thoughts.  I hope it's nothing serious. Rest it up.  Ditch the working out for a while.  Or consider pilates or yoga.

Rocky, now I know why you've not posted your photo in the porn thread. You've been nursing a sore back.  ;)

I have chronic back pain as a result of the bashing when several vertebrae were damaged (cracked).

I feel for you. I understand having to try to roll out of bed and never being able to get comfortable. I tend to stand a lot as a result.

I have heard good things about accupuncture. The ASO here contracts with a clinic and will provide free accupuncture treatments. Maybe the one in your area does something similar.

One thing that helps me, at least temporarily, is to sit in a jacuzzi or hot bath. It is only temporary relief and if there is swelling involved, it could make it worse. But, its a thought.

Let us know how the test goes. I'll be crossing my fingers and sending positive energy your way.

HUGS,

Mark

Hi Everyone

Wow, sounds like lower back pain is practically an epidemic amongst some of us.  It really is the most annoying thing when the only time you're comfortable is if you're standing.

Thanks everyone for your input, experiences, and suggestions.

Interestingly, I hadn't even considered the idea of accupuncture (even though I have used it previously--many years ago).  So that's definitely something I will check into.  If for relief of the pain if nothing else.  Coupled with massage therapy, I hope I can get some relief.  The good news is that my secondary insurance will cover both for up to 12 treatments per year (80%).   I'm more interested in pursuing that option
first then using pain meds right now.

I'll keep you guys posted when I learn more, and thanks again for the support and suggestions--it's amazing how helpful words can be sometimes.

Rodney you are in so much trouble mister!  How dare you suggest what you did.  Once I'm able to move freely you'll be sorry you got so mouthy.  And you'll learn once and for all "who your daddy is".  So just be warned, you're going to get it and get it good!   ;)

Rocky, i feel your pain !!
There is no mention of X-ray and if what i suspect MRI ( that machine you go into to check for everything from tumour ,etc ...) therefore , they willl soon know for sure .
None of the doctors suggested that there maybe calcification formation ?? What you said bring to mind sciatica !!

bear 60 : cold compress is a good idea. This is one of the big difference between eastern and western ideas, for the east; cold is for the dead !! it does help on the short term; with the risk of the pain becoming chronic.

If you can be sure it is a neuralgic problem, accupuncture is a great help; if it is physical , like a misplaced disc or bone; that is the job of a chiropractor.
Maybe we should wait for the results of the MRI, trying to see what is the problem through a PC communication , is quite difficult.
I like to suggest another variation to bear60 exercise; instead of lifting your legs, place 2 tennis balls on your lower back and just relax for 5mins.

May your Christmas be merry !!

Siang

PS: you can always PM me for farther suggestion if you like

Hey Rodney,
I've never seen Rocky with his legs in the air, except for those couple of times in Montreal - in the pool.

But, I'll say no more. My lips are sealed. Uh-uh, I ain't talkin. Nope, not me.

Hehehehehehe!
