gay male worried
« on: February 11, 2012, 04:08:49 pm »
I'm a young gay male who made a big mistake Dec 29 2011, I had unprotected anal sex where I was the receptive bottom for the first time. This was my first time having sex ever so, so I guess when I told this person i was a virgin he thought maybe it was safe to have sex with me unprotected but who knows, that's just me thinking. He did tell me before we met he was negative, but again who knows for sure. The anal part only lasted for 6 min or so with no ejaculation inside me, after that we hugged and I left, been to scared and nervous to contact him again even though he told me to text him again something before leaving.
I got tested for STI's at 2 weeks which came back negative and I'm planning to get tested again for Syphilis at 8 week period, due to me feeling pain when I poop and blood on tissue when I wipe (not a lot of blood just a little). I also tested for HIV at 4 week period which cam back negative it was an Oraquick Advance rapid blood prick test which came back negative, which helped me realize all my symptoms for that past month could have been anxiety/stress of something else. Then just recently my 6 week Clearview rapid blood prick test also came back negative.

My main worry now is that during the 5 week period till today I started to feel tired when waking up and dizzy, with a feeling of weakness on and off throughout the days, then when I wake I up I feel like i have a sore/dry throat that disappears minutes after waking up and drinking water. But today I did wake up at 5 in the morning feeling slight pain and discomfort in my lower stomach part and it was also making noises like grumbling or something, hopefully its not HIV related, maybe some kind of irritable bowel thing???

So in conclusion how reliable are my 4 and 6 week rapid test??? I will test again at 8 weeks and conclusive 3 months using rapid again. Also how likely is that everything I felt in the 5th week till today could be me serconverting and that I could be one of those rare people??? Its because I'm not the healthiest person out their, I hardy eatveggies, I have been eating more fruit/milk everyday since this incident, plus I'm very underweight for a normal male my age, I get aches in my body a lot and I developed a white tongue but besides all that no serious illness that I know of hopefully.

I have learned my lesson and will never have unprotected sex with a person I barely know ever, hopefully my first gay sex experience won't turn out to be the biggest mistake I've done to my health. Any anything you guys can provide me with my questions and worries will be a big help in helping me get through this and sorry for my post being long, just need to get this out since its hard to tell this stuff to others being a closeted individual.

Your six week tests is good, but to obtain a conclusive negative test you will have to retest 3 months post exposure. Just remember, sex lasts only minutes and HIV lasts a lifetime.

Kyle,

I agree with Rodney that your six week negative is a very good indication of your hiv status, but is not conclusive.

The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks, with the average time to seroconversion being only 22 days. A six week negative must be confirmed at the three month point, but is highly unlikely to change.

You don't need to test again at eight weeks. That would just be a waste of time and money. Again, your six week negative is highly unlikely to change  but must be confirmed at three months.

You should also confirm your negative syphilis test at the three month point. Syphilis shares a three month testing window with hiv for a conclusive result.

Forget about symptoms. Neither symptoms nor even the LACK of symptoms will ever tell you a single thing about your hiv status and for that reason we do not discuss symptoms here. ONLY testing at the appropriate time will inform you of your true hiv status.

Please DO NOT EVER rely on what guys tell you about their hiv status. Some people only think they're hiv negative and some people lie. You must assume anyone you are intimate with is hiv positive and protect yourself accordingly by using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Thanks Ann and RapidRod, I will wait out the 12 weeks and do another rapid test, hopefully it doesn't change by then.

Hello everyone I'm back and today I just got my results after going to the LA Gay & Lesbian Center during my 8 week period, which I went and got tested for STD's and HIV. All STD came back negative and as for my HIV results:

All testing done was FREE
8 week HIV-1 Blood Rapid (Negative)
           HIV-1 NAAT (PCR) (Negative)
10 week Rapid HIV Blood Prick (Negative)

I'm so glad my 8 week NAAT PCR test came back negative, as I heard lots of false positives can occur with this kind of testing, I'm happy I wasn't one of those and since this was done with a rapid antibody test also at 8 weeks, it makes me even more confident I didn't get HIV from my exposure. To just make sure I took another today at 10 weeks which made me even more happy!

All that's left is my 12 week conclusive result and I'm home free! (Hopefully)

That's a happy result. I expect you to continue to test negative. Meantime focus on other things in your life so that the waiting time passes much more easily.
