Atripla and drug testing
« on: October 02, 2008, 12:16:48 pm »
So I have to take a drug test, and since I am on Atripla I was concerned that it would show a false positive for marijuana.

I know that if you let the lab know you are on medication that may show a false positive that they will use a more sensitive test to rule out the false positive.

However....about 10 days ago I did smoke a bit of the herb, not much perhaps the equivalent of about half a joint.

So the question is, what are the chances that the sensitive test will in fact pick up this residue? I am not a frequent user, in fact the last time I smoked before this time was more than a year ago.

The drug test is scheduled for next week which would make it at least 15 days after the fact.

Any comments welcome, thx.

I just got done taking a UA for a job. I have been on Atripla for awhile and also was in fear of the information I had recieved on thebody.com. I have run into a artical that gave me information about a certain UA test to request, and when I had them run this specific UA test my UA came back ok...Check out this info and It will be useful to anyone taking a job related UA. Good luck.

According to a respondent on this site who went through the same experience with Sustiva, you can ask whether the sample will be subjected to GC/MS (gas chromatography/mass spectometry) testing. IF so, you'll be fine. If the sample is subjected to a different test and it comes back positive for cannabis, ask that it be re-evaluated with GC/MS. Explain that you are on medication that can yield a false result, but do not identify the med. Offer to have your doc write a confirmatory letter about the false positive WITHOUT naming the med or your diagnosis. All this is valid unless you do smoke pot, in which case this advice wouldn't help you, of course.

Even if your HIV status were known by your prospective employer, your status should not prevent you from being hired. But that's ideal. You're smart to protect your privacy. Strength to you!

As far as the cannabis if you are not a heavy smoker and you only smoked that one time it will most likely not show up in your drug test. You don't have anything to worry about, and if you want to make sure, just drink plenty of water and juice.

Many years ago, my ex and I had a 'surprise' drug test for some insurance policy.  We didn't smoke a lot of pot all that often, but were still concerned about it showing up.  I know there are herbal teas (Goldenseal, for one) that are supposed to cleanse the body from THC.  We were instructed to drink about a gallon or so the night before our tests, which was very hard to do.  We did pass the drug tests, though.  I would certainly research any herbal anythings if taking any ARV meds.  Good luck with it.

It is routine these days for drug screens to include an adulterant screening panel which for one measures the creatinine level in urine.  A low creatinine level indicates the urine is dilute.  Depending on the policies of the agency doing the UDS (urine drug screen) a dilute UA may be viewed as a positive.

PS---I believe most labs automatically do GC/MS quantitations for any positive result.

That's what I am hoping for. My main concern was that since I will likely get the false positive due to the Atripla, then the sample would be reanalyzed with the GC/MS which is supposed to be more sensitive and possibly catch the smaller quantities that may be still in the system...does this make sense?

Yes and I think that the GC/MS would not catch it.

Excellent, thanks. In the meantime I'll be hiiting the jogging trail and sweat out as mush as I can, and drink plenty of fluids (which I always do anyway).

I work for an airline and, since starting meds, I have been tested by the company 4 times for marijuana and cocaine. All the tests came back negative and I do not drink more than 2 or 3 litres of water every day.

I am takind Sustiva and Truvada which is the same as ATRIPLA but in two pills instead of one.
