newly tested Hiv+ general questions

Hello Everyone

In Janurary i purchased oraquick online and it was positive, thinking maybe i did it wrong i ordered another 1.. So last month I took it again and positive! 4 days ago, i went to a hiv specialist/hiv community center and was given the oraquick test and again positive.

My question is concerning the confirmatory test (thats what he called it) it was another mouth swab but was different than the Oraquick. I would have to wait a week for results. Iam not finding much info on this. He also mentioned once my status is confirmed I would start on medication.

Anyone know if this test also test for CD4 count and VL? Can someone be put on Hiv meds without knowing the numbers?

Hey Talk,

The confirmatory test is called a Western Blot and is always done after a positive result on an initial test.  There are separate tests that will show various aspects of your blood, such as CD counts, Viral load and numerous other indicators, like liver function, etc. that are done as well.

There is also a test called Genotype, which will test your HIV virus for any resistance you may have to various HIV drugs.  If possible, you should have a Genotype done before starting meds, as the test can identify which HIV drugs have the greatest chance of working.

You are still very new in your infection, so you have time to decide on what to do.  I am sure you are quite overwhelmed and that is perfectly normal.  Give yourself some time to adjust and take it slow.  Use your doctor to answer your questions and we have many resources on the site that will explain just about everything about HIV and treatment.
