Leave them be, Janno. Such spiders are harmless to humans and are useful because they hunt for other bugs. With a few exceptions here in Oz, spiders don't attack things that they can't eat.

I don't know!?  That looks like the precursor to an invasion!  If they all grow to that size, they look aggressive enough to take over the bed.
In my world, they would have to die!!  Reminds me of an Atripla dream!

Holy sh1t.  I would run screaming from the room (while scooping up kitty and dog) call the realtor and put the house on the market.  I would then promptly check into a hotel and stay there until home and contents (including spiders) was sold!

Ah, that's a harmless little huntsmen spider with some cute little babies.

I have one just like it, sans the babies, in the corner of my living room right now. They're harmless and keep the creepy crawlies at bay. I would be a little concerned, however, if I discovered 100-200 little baby ones running around up there.

Oh, I dunno. Would they make nice pets?

If they are like tarantulas, then they could be quite affectionate, especially when crawling up your arm up your neck or ear.

So, Jan, what did you do?

Bug spray or a mallet?  It's me or them.

My apartment is currently under siege from HUGE ladybirds, so I've gotten used to creepie crawlies.  Having said that when I had the first swarm, I had to call a friend to rescue me.

What I am curious about is what Jan and hubby did. I know you didn't scream and run but what was your (calm) course of action? They are the biggest spiders I have ever seen.
Me, I'd open my eyes and promptly have a rather cold sensation up and down my spine. Then, I'd collect myself and ......slowly get out of bed......then....do what you did!  :D  So, what did you do? Don't tell us you actually left them there. (shudder to think of more babies!)
So, the grandkids don't run off screaming from the sight of these critters?

Like Rod, I'd probably try to count them.  That way, I could tell everybody about all the spiders I saw!  I always liked spiders and often had one for a 'pet' when I was young.  Daddy Long Legs and Wolf spiders were my favorites... and still are.  Garden spiders are pretty cool and get quite large.  They're probably the most common to see outside.

I have a few of confessions to make.

1..A friend from Aussie sent me the photo..they are not my spiders

2..I knew it was harmless huntsman and her babies.

3..I posted it knowing it would scare the sh*t out of most of you... ;)

Having said that I think I would have freaked..just a little bit..because although they really are harmless they do like to jump.and believe me I know that from experience, it happended to me when I first moved to Australia....I ran around screaming like a banshee until my neighbour (who heard the screams) told me they just like to have fun..I eventually got used to having them in the house.

Living in Aussie hardens you up to a lot of things.

Hugs to all you little pussies out there..and Merry Christmas.. :D ;)

I agree, that's why I never kill spiders. But something that damn big would have to get the hell out of my house! Plus, I watch too much sci-fi, it might try to eat the kitties. My roomie would prolly try to trap it and put it outside. :o

Ja,

Huntsmen sipders are big scary looking fuckers. They can grow to the size of your hand and they move fast. I mean, really fast.

But actually they're rather charming creatures. Well, as charming as a spider can get. And despite their grusome appearance, they really are harmless to humans.

On the other hand, if you're a cockroach and there's a huntsman about; you're fucked.

I have let a shark take a piece of fish from my mouth, I have hand fed moray eels bigger than I am. I have worked with snakes bigger than me. Not much in nature scares me, HOWEVER, bugs and spiders do. Put a cockroach on me and I turn into a little girl and run screaming for the hills. I especially hate those fuzzy worm thingys that I call "woolly bullys." May all the ones Ive killed rot That being said, if I saw that over my bed, I would run like hell. Screaming wouldn't even be an option for me. The cats and the dog and I would move to Alaska. Period. Maybe after some seriously intensive inpatient psychiatric help I could return, but never to that house! EWWWW YUCK!

They actually emit a foul, rotting smell when disturbed.
