Just not sure
« on: August 06, 2012, 07:52:40 am »
Hi, sorry if this falls into the realms of paranoia but I am not sure and wanted to ask!

I had an incident last week that unsettled me and i wanted your advice please.  I was at the harbour and was running to catch a boat home, I was only wearing flip flops (open shoes) and hurt myself on a rock, I tore a good few layers of skin clean of the top of my foot, I ended up with a cut that was a good 3mm deep and about 3 or 4 cm long.  The problem is that another guy was also running for the boat and cut himself on the same rock!!!

There would have only been 10 secs, if that between him cutting himself and me cutting myselfnand both cuts were bleeding. There was no contact with each other though.

I guess the thing that has me worried is the very small amount of time between us each cutting each other.  I thought that the rule was that the fluid had  to be dry Before it was not infectious and obviously 10 secs is not enough time.

What do you think? Is this a risk?  Sorry if it's a dumb question but I have no idea.

Thanks for your help.

Under absolutely no circumstances is this an HIV situation.

The old "fluid had to be dry" thing is about two decades out of date. HIV simply cannot remain infectious in an aerobic environment. It must be transmitted inside the body.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

Wow!! Thats great to know. So it really is that even within just 10 secs of environmental exposure it cannot infect?

If this is the case then why on earth to some places say the opposite? Obviously you can't account for what other websites say but it's a shame that they are not up with modern science!

So is it literally nano seconds that HIV survives in the environment for?  It's an interesting thing to understand.

We're not responsible for what you may find on other sites. I'll just say that we are very, very careful about how we evaluate anyone's risk situation. And in this case you are worrying needlessly as JK has indicated.

Thanks guys for your fast response and informative replies.   I am happy ton hear from you both that this is not a concern.

Can I just ask why it is not? Not that I contest your no risk assesment at all it's just that it would be great to understand why not. I can see what are regarded as definite transmission risks but am interested to understand why a few secs in the environment is considered no risk. Is it that the fluids are transferred and not direct? The time? Or both?

As I said not questioning the risk assessment at all just curious to understand.

Thanks

If HIV was possible to transmit in a viable form in the manner you are concerned about we would have known so long before today. Very small changes in body temperature, pH and moisture levels quickly damage and render the virus unable to infect.

Variations on accidents such as yours are very common. And infection just doesn't happen that way. Similarly with barbershop nicks, blood on toilet seats , etc.

Non-risk. Period.
