Susana Valente, a Scripps Research biologist led the study which is published in the July 20, 2012 issue of the journal Cell Host and Microbe, which focused on the medically promising compound known as Cortistatin A, a natural product isolated in 2006 from a marine sponge.

Here are highlights of the article:

 - In the new study used a synthetic version of the compound, didehydro-Cortistatin A, to study the compound's effect on two strains of HIV ( 1 and 2).

 - The results showed a reduced viral production by 99.7 percent from primary CD4+T cells (a type of immune cell) isolated from patients without levels of the virus in their bloodstream and who had been under HAART treatment for a long period of time.

 - When the compound was added to other antiviral treatments, it further reduced by 20 percent viral replication from CD4+T cells isolated from patients with detectable amounts of virus in their bloodstreams.

 - The inhibitor works by binding tightly to the viral protein known as Tat, a potent activator of HIV gene expression, effectively preventing the virus from replicating even at miniscule concentrations -- making it the most potent anti-Tat inhibitor described to date, Valente said.

 - Another interesting feature of this compound is that withdrawal of the drug from cell culture does not result in virus rebound, which is normally observed with other antiretrovirals.

 - While most antiretroviral compounds block only new infections, didehydro-Cortistatin A reduces viral replication from already-infected cells, potentially limiting cell-to-cell transmission.

 - The new inhibitor already has a drug-like structure, is effective at very low concentrations, and has no toxicity associated with it, at least at the cellular level, the study noted.

From reading those old posts to obsessive compulsively googling for "hiv news" several times a day, we have:

prostratin, bryostatin and now cortistatin

Will any of these really turn into a pill or an injection for us? Will all these potential drugs towards eradication come true?

Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that I confirmed positive only since June of 2012 and began HAART right away. With so many research news like ZFN, vorinostat to activate reservoirs and many more like vaccine by Bionor coming in within a relatively short time since my diagnosis, I should feel lucky and be reassured that a cure is gonna happen.

We should keep asking for progress updates so the hopes wont sediment and sink to bottom one by one. Let's bring all these potential cure up again by discussing them more often!!

There will always be  a light at the end of a dark tunnel :D. Hoping is not bad, but let's take it like a grain of salt.

aids policy project has launched a petition addressed to the nih to increase the funds for a cure in a reasonably short time and available for everyone.

you can sign the petition here:

Curious, The Obama Administration just gave $80 million to ADAP http://www.poz.com/articles/obama_hhs_adap_1_22714.shtml.  The NIH just gave $77 million to Scripps and Duke to develop an HIV vaccine http://www.genengnews.com/gen-news-highlights/duke-scripps-to-anchor-new-niaid-funded-hiv-aids-center/81247040/  Those are just in the past 2 weeks.  How much have other countries contributed?

You mean, how much have other countries contributed to increase HIV treatment of Americans and research in an American university?

How about towards any research?  How often do you read where the British, French, or Australian government give $180 million to HIV research (it could be at one of their universities).  I don't ever recall reading such article.

77 milion dollars are peanuts if compared to the total aids budget of 27 billion! only the 10% of that amount invested in a cure would accelerate the research towards it by years.

also, the amount you cited, according to the article present in the link of your post, are for research in the vaccine field and not for a cure.

That's because you live in the US. How often do you get news from other countries except when you are invading it?

Research grants usually don't make the news, especially at universities. There's HIV research all over the world going on right now. And besides, it's only logical that the richest country in the world invests much more than others, not to say a moral obligation.

And they do, thats the point! The other rich countries are quite far down the list of funders.   In fact the number 2 funder of HIV research is the Gates Foundation (which last time I checked isnt a county).  Where are the other "rich countries" and why isn't there more outrage (or a petition) calling for them to step up to the plate?
the link of your post, are for research in the vaccine field and not for a cure.

Thats because it is widely considered to be the only way to end the AIDS pandemic is for a preventative vaccine that is widely available for use.  If you have a limited amount of money to spend you are going to spend it where you can get the most bang for your buck.  A cure is nice, but it won't end the global AIDS pandemic.

>>Side note, if the US election in the fall swings Republican (which it may very well) funding for HIV research could very well be cut.  If the world is counting on the US to be the sole funder of HIV research, then we're all fucked.

I think it's a valid question to ask about the research funding of other rich nations.
By far most of the research money comes from the US (either publicly funded or Gates Foundation etc).
My guess is, that HIV in the US is much more of an issue than in other rich countries. The map says it all:

To pick Germany as an example for a rich nation:

Germany  USA  factor
population82 Mio311 Miox4
population HIV+70.0001.200.000  x17
new infections per year   300050.000x16
In New York City alone live more positive people than in entire Germany (107.000 vs 70.000)
So, it's simply a question of numbers. Some other rich nations such as Japan have even lower numbers.
With the much higher HIV prevalence and new infections each year, it's no big surprise that there is more political pressure in the US to fund this kind of reseach.
