Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

I have been through this site (and others) with a fine toothed comb and can't find an answer to my dilemna. So I hope you can answer this question for me (I have submitted the same question but need to provide more detail).

I went to a massage parlor and got an erotic massage. We did what I now know is called frottage. I grinded my penis into her vagina for a few minutes. I noticed the next day that I had a herpes sore on my penis that was healing. I have had herpes for many years. Aside from the guilt associated from potentially passing this on (of course, I never would have done this had I noticed it), I am concerned about exposure and getting HIV from this person through the frottage (love that word). Can you pleeeeeaaaasssseee give me your opinion on this?

The only risk was giving herpies to the other person.

This was a no risk incident for you as far as HIV is concerned.

If you haven't already read the lesson on this site about transmission you should so now. You will find the link to it in the first thread in this section.

You need to keep in mind that everytime you have intercourse you have to be wearing a condom. As long as you always do that you will be covered, literally and figuratively, as far as HIV is concerned.

I did read the whole welcome section on transmission but I didn't feel that this situation was so black and white. There was not intercourse or penetration, but there were fluid exchanges through the penis/vagina  'grinding or rubbing' with herpes sores on my penis being exposed. There always seems to be that caveat of "STD or broken skin"

If you'd had unprotected penetration, that would be a different matter. The reason frottage isn't a risk is because hiv is a very fragile virus. It's preferred environment is INSIDE the human body, and when it finds itself outside the body, it quickly becomes damaged and unable to infect, even when presented with an opening. It has to find that opening to the body while it is still inside the body. That is why hiv is primarily transmitted during unprotected intercourse. You have to remember that even when if finds an opening, it has to also bump into the correct type of cell. It can't infect any old cell, it needs specific cells that have specific receptors to accept the plugs on the surface of hiv that hiv uses to latch onto. It's these plugs that become damaged.

You didn't have a risk.
