Elton John and Bruce Springsteen were also great live in concert.  And though I never saw her live I think kd Lang did the best version of Hallelujah ever.

I saw her in concert in Perth Australia when she sang this song you could hear a pin drop, and when she finished everyone went mad, including me...wonderful singer.

I once told Jim if I ever left him for anyone it would be her.. ;D

Can't get this song and video out of my head.  It builds some great surrealism when the robot leaves the club at 1:30.

Zach!!! - Augh, man! You gotta post a warning note when you put a song up like "Elephant" in a link. Geezus, I'm weeping openly at 5:50 in the morning. Helluva song, helluva start to the day. Wow. Need more coffee...

Update: I've had coffee. Feel better. I love how music has so much power to move one's soul. Few things can really touch us like that. What an amazing song he wrote.

Though it's not about HIV, I've always considered Tori Amos' song "Crucify", the lyrics, to be my go-to song for emotions about dealing with this stupid disease:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ipCKIxdHTs

"Every finger in the room was pointed at me,
I wanna spit in their faces, but
Then I get afraid of what that would bring.
Got a bowling ball in my stomach,
Got a desert in my mouth,
Figures that my courage would choose to sell out, now."
...
   "I gotta have my suffering,
So that I can have my cross.
I know a cat named Easter, he says,
    'Will you ever learn?
You're just an empty cage, girl,
    If you kill the bird'."
...
"I've been raising up my hand, drive another nail in...
Where're those angels when you need them?"

                                       -Tori Amos

The Drums - I Hope Time Doesn't Change Him

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43sBH18E6dE

The Drums write, record and produce all of their material on their own record label. They even design their album sleeves and merch. Their album from last year, "Encyclopedia" to me is the best thing I've heard in a long time. The songs are so good that I had a hard time deciding on just one.

The guys in the band also have their own projects that are very worthy of attention :

Jonathan Pierce - Home
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXh33EtPjpc
Nice, simple, upbeat love song.

Cascading Slopes (Jacob Graham)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dIopSGTDtY
Jacob's album is a collection of folk songs he wrote from a Quaker perspective performed on old analogue synthesizers.
Diagnosed 1988.

Thanks Zach and all you guys for the music suggestions.  I couldn't agree more with you Zach, your original post that is, music can be so very powerful in healing, expressing our innermost thoughts, escaping, protesting, making love .....

I sometimes get annoyed with the money some musicians make, but then I want them to be rewarded for what their creativity has given to the world.

PS My world is often very silent, so when I do get to listen it is so very special.

PPS  Try out some stuff from Alison Moyet?  This House eg.
