A team of Italian, Spanish and French synthesized a molecule that blocks the transmission of the AIDS virus in people and therefore could prevent the infection from spreading, it was announced today.
The molecule was developed by researchers at the University of Milan (Italy), Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), Seville (Spain) and the Institute for Structural Biology (IBS), Grenoble (France).
The molecule is similar to sugars on the surface of the AIDS virus and is recognized by a "protein-receptor" of the human immune system. With this, the "sentinels of immunity" are attached to the molecule and prevent the virus enters the body through mucous membranes.
The three centers showed the molecule developed as a European patent.

I've actually wondered the same thing.  If they developed a vaccine before a cure would they just vaccinate everyone who's not infected and let those of us who are go the natural way.  I'm just hoping they'll maybe discover a cure before a vaccine, if they discover either.

sensual and Hellraiser,

A vaccine can be therapeutic depending on it's MOA. But anyway, this decade will be the decade of vaccines, according to Bill Gates who will donate 10billion dollars to meke it that way:

http://www.boston.com/news/world/europe/articles/2010/01/30/gates_foundation_to_donate_10b_for_vaccine_research/

I believe 4.6 billion to go for malaria and hiv/aids.
