My dog passed away today
« on: February 06, 2007, 02:01:42 am »
My partner and I had to put our standard poodle Levi to sleep today. He was almost 14 years old and recently had a prostate infection which weakened him. He had stopped eating and was unable to stand up on his own. My partner travels for days at a time and Levi was my constant companion. I took him with me all the time and many people knew me as the "guy with the giant poodle". I've never been so attached to a pet and had never had to have an animal put to sleep before. I rarely cry but I've been tearful all day. He had a good life and his end was peaceful but we are really going to miss him.

Ford, I am so sorry. There are few things worse in life (to me) than losing a pet (companion, rather) of many years.

Beautiful dog. My only words of consolation: at least he lived a full life with two great guys.

Her finely-touched spirit had still its fine issues, though they were not widely visible. Her full nature, like that river of which Cyrus broke the strength, spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

Ford.

I am so, so sorry.  I love the picture.  Yes, I can certainly see the two of you making a great couple.  My white, deaf boxer was my constant companion when I was recovering from PCP and letting him go was the hardest thing I had ever done.

I share your grief.

Ford,

Losing a beloved pet is always tough, especially when you've shared your life with him all of his life.  I offer sincere condolences on your loss.

As sad as you are now I hope you can soon find consolation in the fact that Levi had a wonderful, full life with you and passed away knowing he was loved.  He fared so much better with you than many other dogs fare with their owners, people who don't understand the commitment, love, and attention most dogs need.   People who dump a pet off at the pound because the animal has outworn its novelty.  Levi had a tranquil ending to a happy life, without prolonged suffering or pain.

I hope you're feeling better soon.  I know I'm nearly recovered when I can look at a picture of the recently deceased without a well of tears in my eyes, eventually able to see and remember the good times.

Again, sorry for your loss of Levi.

Oh Ford,

I know the pain must be unbearable. It is like loosing a child.
Knowing that you have given him the best of lives is a small, but important consolation.

Go out in nature when the pain gets too overwhelming. You will then be able to feel close to him again.

I once heard this saying : "dogs are a temporary gift". You certainly cherished yours..

Levi will now rest on top of the rainbow, where all animals go.... I'll look up the next time I see one.

Hey Ford....
What a great pic.....looks (and sounds) like Levi was a true friend and part of the family......such a warm and friendly looking dog (you have competition!)....but really know that Levi enjoyed the wonderful care that you and your partner gave him....including your (unselfish) decision to end the pain and allow him to make a transition into "doggy heaven".....

Peace to Levi, you and your partner....

My deepest condolences.

I know what it is to loose a dog. It will take some time to get use to being without him but you have the comfort to know that you gave him the best life you could.

My mother tells me that her grandmother once told her that when doggies die they go to heaven and when we die they are the first things we see and since they know how to swim they help us cross a large river in heaven and guide us to where God is. I am sure Levi is up in heaven just have a good old' time with all the other puppies and doggies.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Author unknown...

Ford,

I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Levi.  Remember him as the healthy, happy dog he was.  I know you can never replace him, but hopefully in time you will be able to have another dog to share your life with. I am sure Levi would want that for you.

Dan

Hopefully Levi & Oscar are playing together accross the Rainbow Bridge.

I am sorry about your loss. Levi was a beutiful dog. I had a poodle for 17 years and we also had to put her to sleep. I was holding her when the vet put her the injection until I felt she could no longer hold her head. It was the saddest experience in my life. I can understand how you feel. I spent most of my childhood with her.
This is a picture of both of us.
Feel better soon, Ford.
Love. Juan.

Very sorry you had such a sad day, Ford.  Having been through this with my ex-partner, I remember removing all the traces that I could think of which would be a glaring reminder at a painful time, but, of course, you always forget something.  And with a dog, the time arrives when you would have gone for a walk but now don't.  I wish you well, Win

Sweetie and I send heartfelt condolences. I can tell you loved him very much, I'm also sure that he understood that too.
I've been fostering a dog whose owner committed suicide, and he definately went through a grief period. This tells me that our furry friends understand more than we humans give them credit for.

Ford,
I am truly sorry to hear about Levi. My heart goes out to you. An animal shows us the true meaning of unconditional love.  I'm sure he is missing the two of you as much as you are missing him but he is free from pain and someday you'll be reunited. We put our Jake down November 2005 and I miss him everyday. We have our 3 other dogs but none are like or will ever be like Jake.
Take care!

Ford,

So sorry to hear of your loss.  Pets are simply the best -- unconditional love always.  Sounds like you were both lucky to have each other.  I know how much you will miss him.

Hugs,

Mike

Ford, I found this little poem that I think is a nice tribute to Levi :

If it Should Be

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
and pain should keep me from my sleep,
then you must do what must be done,
for we know this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
but don't let grief then stay your hand,
for this day, more than the rest,
your love and friendship must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
what is to come can hold no fears.
Would you want me to suffer? So,
when the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend,
only stay with me until the end,
and hold me firm and speak to me,
until my eyes no longer see.

It is a kindness that you do to me,
although my tail it's last has waved,
from pain and suffering I have been saved.

Do not grieve, it should be you,
who must decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

I am sorry about your pet,  I know they are not replaceable but when you are ready make sure you get another one from an animal shelter they sure could use some love such as the one you have given.

If the day comes that you look into another companion, I have been trying to find a good home for the dog I have been fostering. He belonged to my son's girlfriend Christy. She shot herself three days after Thanksgiving. I have had Noah in my home since. He is a very sweet animal that has had an incredible journey. He has been shot twice by people trying to break into Christy's house. He has a healed surgical scar on his rear leg from an extensive surgery to repair a badly broken leg when he was a puppy. He had been hit by a car. When people see him, they only see what he is, instead of what his character is. Even with all of the love I have raised him with here, he still cringes when i reach out to pet him. I think he had been hit, but I'll never really know. He is a pit bull with one quarter Dalmation, so he is white with black spots. Not trying to be pushy here, just offering a suggestion, if you find yourself considering another companion.

Thanks to everyone for the sympathy and kindness. I'm still adjusting to Levi not being here. I keep looking where he used to lay, expecting him to be here when I walk through the door, etc. I know we will not be getting another dog any time soon. My partner doesn't want to get another dog but I know some day we will.
