Title: Condom broke and HIV testing!
Post by: hpman on February 18, 2007, 03:32:48 pm
Hi all of you!
Firstly, I would like to send my best wishes to all of you in this forum!
I come from Vietnam and i would like you to consult my situation as follows:
45 days ago, I sexed with the girl (prostitute in vietnam) who i didn't know her hiv status before. At the beginning, she made oral sex with me without unprotected and after that i used one condom for vaginal intercourse with her but when i pulled out my pennis i discovered my condom broken (big break)(I ejaculated into her vaginal) and i wahsed clearly my pennis immmediately. After 27 days, i tested hiv with rapid test antibody (kind: Determine Abbot test) with result HIV - negative. However, i am very worried about that so i again tested hiv (ELISA 4th generation) after 41 days from the time of unprotected situation, result with HIV - negative. On the 4th week, i had a sore throat with dry cough (now i still dry cough may be for cold weather) and feel painful neck (or may be swollen lympth node at my neck). My temp. fluctuated from 36.2oC to 37.4oC everyday.
How do you consult me for the result of hiv test at 41 days???
Thank you for your help.

The average time to seroconversion is 22 days. All but the smallest number of those who are going to seroconvert will do so within 4-6 weeks after an exposure to the HIV virus. So your negative at 41 days is excellent. To be absolutely certain that you're HIV negative you should re-test at 13 weeks after the incident.

Given that you were protected until the condom broke and with your negative result I do expect you will continue to test negative.

Your symptoms are totally irrelevant and in no way indicative of HIV infection. But then you need to know that neither the presence nor the absence of symptoms should ever be the basis for knowing your HIV status. Only an HIV test taken at the appropriate time will give you that answer.

If your symptoms continue you should discuss them with your doctor.

Cheers,

Thank you very much for your advices.
I really will retest hiv after 3 months for conclusion as you consulted me. However, i am afraid of hiv because i felt i had a slight fever (as i described above) as ARS symptom.
This is the first matter so i always use condom whenever i do with strange girl but broken condom. I am very worried about that.

A fever is NOT an HIV specific symptom. Did you really read what I wrote to you?

Secondly, you should be using condoms with any woman you are with, whether is "strange" or "familiar.' The only time you can responsibly consider dispensing with using condoms is if you are in a securely monogamous relationship and both partners have tested negative together at an appropriate testing point. Otherwise you should always be wearing a condom for intercourse. No exceptions.

Thanks Andy for your quick reply. But my accident is the broken condom at the head of my pennis so i am afraid of hiv transmiss through the head of my pennis. If the ARS symptom appeared and then how many days the antibody appear to discover by a test??? (in common: 22days seroconversion)

You don't need to test any further than your 13 weeks conclusive test.

hp,

A three month test is conclusive. As you have a nine week negative result, I'm fully expecting your conclusive test to also be negative.

If you haven't already, make sure you read through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can avoid having one break on you in future. A correctly used condom rarely breaks.

Thank you for your quick response in my situation. I really will test after 3 month but what should I do rapid test (determince - Abbott) or test Elisa for conclusion???

Any FDA approved test such as you have mentioned is ok at 13 weeks. They will all give you a reliable result.

Good luck.

Dear Andy, Ann and RapidRod

I am very very worried about my situation because till now I still have a sore throat (althought I used antibiotic ) and my body's temp always fluctuated everyday (morning: 36.1 oC; noon: 36.7 oC; afternoon: 36.7-37.0 oC; sometimes : 37.4 oC by using Oral Thermometer). I felt I have hiv because my ars continue now. Sore throat and mild fever are these signs of ARS in infected persons. Pls help me for peace in my mind. ( I tested Negative after 9.5 weeks by rapid test - Determine Abbott ). I don't know whether anynone in our forum tested hiv by rapid test or standard test Elisa Negative after 4, 6, 9.5 weeks and then turn to positive after 13 weeks - 24 weeks ????

I've never seen it happen. You don't fall within the late seroconvert group. Your result will not change.

hp,

I removed the post you made in the "I Just Tested Poz" forum. As you have NOT just tested poz, you have no business posting in that forum. Please keep all your additional thoughts or questions here, in your OWN thread. Please also read the forum posting guidelines in the Welcome Thread (http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=220.0).

You have been told that your nine week negative result is highly unlikely to change. I'm fully expecting you to continue to test negative.

Ann

You are conclusively negative.  You dont need to retest over this incident but it's a good idea to do a full STD panel, if you are sexually active, at least once a year.
