my new obsession, a great artist which made quite an album. every song in that album has its video (every one of them is really good), and all songs are really really good (any of them could be someones favourite). the knife, björk like electro-pop as its best. this woman really deserves attention because of so little money she has, and the quality of the production and song writing.

my favourite one: (kill)

I have serious doubts as to whether I would have been able to bring this bike to a safe stop given the fact a snake was staring at me from the speedo.  ???

I followed this guy for a bit, then lost track until today...

28y/o cancer patient bids farewell to friends and family.  So young, makes me realize how blessed I am.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL8PePogHbQ

 :'(

That was so difficult to watch.  I went back and watched some of his first videos.  At first, I thought I had pulled up some other guy's videos.  I couldn't believe that was the same person.  So very sad.  I can't imagine getting the news that there was nothing more to be done.

I remember visiting a family friend in hospice and especially the night before he died.  He was so young.  I was about 21 at the time.  I helped him to the bathroom.  He was barely recognizable.  I remember a friend of his telling him that he didn't know how he would live without him.  He turns to him and answers, "But, you will."  While the friend was trying to to express his grief, it came out insensitive.  It really does remind you to put things in perspective.

I guess all these actors read the same script.  Or, perhaps they do think alike.  By the way, the word "moist" is one of my least favorite words, too.

I started to watch; but quickly shut it off when I realized what was going on. Having lived through similar situations too many times, I didn't need to see someone else going through that to know how horrible that situation is. However, you did come away with what I think is the right message of those situations - to put everything in perspective and to LIVE and enjoy your life while you can.  ;)

nothing like a little touch of Death to help you remember how great today is - even when today sucks.  ;)

I couldn't find this on youtube, but found it on MSNBC.  A young girl is interviewed LIVE on CNN about her attendance at the White House kid state dinner.  Her mother mouths everything her daughter says.  It is so odd, and I wonder about this mother.  Very odd.

It looks like the script for the interview was on a monitor and her mother, excited for her daughter, was reading it along with her. When children perform it is common for parents to mentally and emotionally perform with them from the audience, kind of like these guys:

I love the Olympic parents.  At first, I wondered if they had scripted the interview and put her answers into the teleprompter.  But, the girl doesn't appear to be reading.  And, most news outlets (besides FOX) wouldn't script an interview.  Who knows.  Perhaps they did go over what they would ask.  Or, mom is so connected with her daughter.

Love the Olympic parents. The father looks like he was a mere seconds away from a coronary. ;D

I can relate to the parents. While watching Olympic weight lifting I got so caught up my hands flew to my face-- I forgot I was wearing glasses and bent them.

I happened to notice your new pictar Gymrat.  Last night I watched a fantastic documentary on Judy Garland -
Judy Garland, By Myself.

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/episodes/judy-garland/about-judy-garland/600/

A review of the documentary mentioned this performance, which I post in honor of the 2012 Presidential Campaign.  Please note she sang this to mourn JFK right after his assassination.  She hated Nixon by the way.

Some of the most touching performances in the documentary are from her TV series in 1963.

There's also this funny priceless little moment.  Ethel Merman and Barbara Streisand are the guests.  Its 3 very different kinds of artist, and Streisand of course is so young.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7AViKc52P0

They are talking about belting.  Merman "suggests" (I guess its was all scripted, but Im not sure....) they belt There's No Bizness but Show Bizness.

Ethel launches in full throttle when the song finally starts about 4 mins into the clip.

Judy is full of energy too.  The priceless moment is to see Streisand completely flummoxed!  Look at her face and gestures at 4:26.

Streisand rallies but can't be a natural about it, and makes her contribution a parody.

Anyway, that's one of the themes of the doc. How Garland was the most fantastic singer and entertainer and the natural quality of her voice, performances, contact with the audience.  Even though of course it was all high artistry and show business to the end.

Also, a trivia.  When she died, an independent English coroner said there as NO cirrhosis of the liver and no signs of alcoholism.

I dug a bit on that, always assuming the standard story that she was a drug addict and alcoholic.  Her daughters confirm the drug addictions.  Liza has said that the misconceptions about her mother include that she was unhappy and that she was a tragic figure.

I finally give The Newsroom a B.  Loved Jane Fonda's small role.  I like the young ones. I can't fully believe in the character of Will McAvoy, the old-fashioned noblesse oblige moderate Republican now speaking against the new radical right and the new crazies.

Is that show always that good? It's been running here (two weeks left - Sky Atlantic) but I haven't bothered watching it as the trailers made it seem like it was more about romantic liaisons in a newsroom setting. I'll have to catch the last two episodes.

Too bad there are no real news programs that have the balls to tell it like it is.  :-\

A news/commentary program like Rachel Maddow cuts pretty deep sometimes.  You can get it as a podcast for free anywhere in the world.  But the podcast is only available the day after the broadcast.  So Monday's is in podcast form on Tuesday. and so on. Then it disappears.

I think The Daily Show is mostly entertainment but the political commentary will go there, like The Newsroom clip.

The fictional broadcaster and his broadcast, on that show The Newsroom, is a bit odd, because its a cable "news" show in which the anchor does do openly biased commentary.  Maddow does this.  And so do the rightwing "news" shows on Fox.

Andrea True Connection:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KULavrCJINg&playnext=1&list=PLCEC6F085D6CF95D9&feature=results_video

I was at an arty party last weekend and someone played a 1970's porn film called The Millionairess.  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0143677/
Andrea True's costar was Marc Stevens.  AKA "Mr. 10 1/2" of the famous Mapplethorpe photo.
He died of AIDS in the late 80's.   One of his films was called The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann and its supposed to be pretty interesting. There is a restored full length version out recently.  Theres a clip on YouTube here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHluRg5Qmz0

Wow the colors and quality really pop in that clip.  We don't think of 70's porn looking like this.  I bet its a bit of a yawn but also a bit of a hoot!  The Millionairiess was more typical - fuzzy and not all that interesting, just come camp value.

Andrea True finally retired to Woodstock and died last fall.  She couldn't sing all that well but the tunes were catchy.

Well, you like any of them? Got the PSB yesterday and enjoyed it so far, despite one or two hammy songs - Breathing Space, Hold On.....  Did you listen to the making of with David Walliams??  Also there appears to be an all instrumental version that's sort of chill out?   Waiting here.... for all hard disco mix of course.

I really like the music from Alanis

but the PSB really disappointed me, after 3 or 4 listens. Oh there are some decent bits on the disc; but to compare it to "Behavior", as many are doing, is simply blasphemous!

I put a load of huge damask dinner napkins in the washer yesterday and they hung outside all day and over night and brought them in this evening, they are snowy white.  I was patiently folding them (i never iron) and watching There's No Business like Show Business with Ethel Merman and Donald OConnor and a rather unsettling Marilyn Monroe.  Merman and OConnor are a vaudville act and its the story of their long trajectory.  Their children become part of the act and one of them sent my gaydar ringing ringing, as Im folding folding folding in the setting sun, and then he decides to become a priest.  So I look up the actor and its Johnnie Ray.
And he was gay!
Anyone ever heard of him? I hadn't, though the song cry is a standard.  He was a big star, a white soul singer, before Elvis it seems.

Willy, Gymrat. Yeah cute and nice voice. It's kind of shocking and sad that we don't know him as part of our gay cultural heritage since we aren't even that young!!

I definitely relate to this rant.

Mitt's Magical Mormon Undies: Penn Jillette's Rant Reduxhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qJDd-2tM-A&feature=my_liked_videos&list=LLEtq1wpleklTDwsjwK1D6Hg

So Mitt Romney comes along and at some level doesn’t he know what he believes is crazy?  At some level, isn’t he going, “There weren’t Jews in North America.”  You know, that’s not where the Garden of Eden was.  Doesn’t that go through his mind?  And that’s the part of that whole thing that kills me.  If Mitt Romney really believes what he says he believes, he is bug-nutty, bat shit crazy.  And he’s not, bug-nutty, bat shit crazy.  He’s the same as Obama.  If Obama believes what he was being taught in that church in Chicago, okay, he is bat shit crazy.  And Obama is demonstratively not bat shit crazy. ...

I think they are good people who somehow think that they’re morality and their love for humanity and their love for their families are tied up in this weird tradition.  And when they think that the Bible is the word of God, I think they mean something else.  I sometimes think that many other people are speaking in a code that I’ve not been given the key to.
