Title: Thailand; Do they test for HIV when you apply for work in hospitality?
Post by: Anqueetas on December 02, 2012, 03:44:30 am
I'm a soon to be college graduate in Bangkok and I'm interest to work in hospitality. I know that the employer will ask you to do a health examination(Blood, urine, X-ray etc.). My question is anybody know that do they will ask you to test for HIV? Will it become a problem for me to work in hotel?

Thank you

As Thailand is one of the more forward-thinking of the Asian countries when it comes to hiv (at least where the government is concerned), I can't imagine that they'd require (or allow) hiv tests for the hospitality industry - or the catering industry for that matter. (Unless of course by hotel you mean brothel. ;D Just kidding.)

It would seem from what you wrote that preparing for what lies ahead in the employment arena regarding gaining employment has been part of your coursework. Is it not possible to find out what, exactly, the medical exam entails from one of your instructors? Or maybe even from a Thai government website page somewhere?

I do know that in places like the US and UK, hiv is absolutely NOT a barrier to working in the hospitality/catering field. There's no reason why it should be. Good luck!

I think Thailand is pretty pro-HIV (for lack of a better term). As far as I have read, there are no restrictions whatsoever to visiting/working/living in Thailand on the basis of HIV status.

And to indulge in a little bit of gossip, rumour has it that the Crown Prince is HIV+.

Sadly Ann, that is not what happen in reality. There many hotel that start to screen candidate for STD and HIV before hiring, it is a trend that start to spread. So I'm quite worry about my future. I guess I will have to take my chances in a hotel that I what to get in and prey that they will not test me for HIV.

Even there is a law that said "HIV discrimination in employment is illegal" but Thailand do have a very weak rule of law. A friend of mine my work in hotel ad shes said that there are people who's get fired for being poz or denied employment for being poz. I'm not really sure how true this is. I hope that is not. Hotel will force you to sign a consent that allow them to test you for HIV(thus it is now legal to do so), if you do not sign they won't hire you.
