It's been snowing really hard here for 1/2 hour and the sidewalks are already lightly covered. Fun!

Honey at least you can see your sidewalks.  It's got to be at least 7" outside, and snowing yet again.  I've shoveled from my apartment door, down the front steps, out to the road.  The landlord pays the tenant in the back apartment to shovel, and he hasn't done shit.  Which is nothing new, the last big snow we had I shoveled.  I'm not doing it again, I'll contact the landlord.

Yes.  I talked with the landlord and he put off coming over because it was constantly snowing and the wind was whipping around.  So, I shoveled around to the back where my car is, and around my car.  Which would equal about a block plus a little extra for the space around the car.  The snow was 8 & 1/4 inches, very heavy, not that fluffy stuff we've gotten before.

But, it was exercise.  The landlord called and said he will be over to snow blow out behind my car.  I told him about shoveling and suggested he not pay the man in the back for work he doesn't do lol.  Northern women are tough!

How many tenants in your building are affected by the lazygood4nufink wart who is not attending to his snow duties ? Remember to keep a copy off the letter to the landlord and if pos e mail them to.  Helpful if you have to claim damages from the snow not being attended to .

Just myself and him for the moment, until the landlord can rent out the middle apartment.

on a good note, earlier today my best friend came over in her all wheel drive truck, picked me up and we went to this local restaurant that this man from Charlotte, NC, opened (he let us know he is not used to all this snow lol).  I had a fried green tomato sandwich, which was absolutely fantastic, and potato corn soup, which you could tell was made from scratch.  So I did have some calories to burn off.

Edited to correct spelling.

No, I meant you need to move somewhere else where it doesn't snow so much. Doesn't have to be the Sunshine State. I mean, it snows here but nothing like where you are because you get constant lake effect snow on top of regular snowstorms.

ps: I just went out and shoveled but at least it was only two inches, and very lightweight/fluffy.

You're right, I do.  Though it usually doesn't do this much snowing as often as it has been this season.  If we only got hit with this once (twice at the most) it wouldn't be so bad.  Even the constant frigid temps; usually not the norm.

All depends what was in the lease, my dear -- there may be a clause in it that states the tenant is responsible for shoveling, and if all three units have this clause it's up to them to divvy up the responsibility.

As far as my row house, there are six units, and there is now clause about shoveling. The shoveling law if very strict in Philadelphia:

According to Philadelphia Code 10-720, "The owner, agent and tenants of any building or premises shall clear a path of not less than 30 inches in width on all sidewalks abutting the building or premises withing 6 hours after the snow has ceased to fall." Failure to comply in Philadelphia sidewalk snow removal could result in penalties ranging from $100 to $300, and residents can also be penalized for dumping the snow from their sidewalks into the street.

If I lived in a small row house where I was the sole tenant it would be my responsibility, anything over that it's either in the lease or if not the landlord gets the fine. But I told my landlord last month that I've been shoveling so he should keep that in mind when deciding whether or not to raise my rent (which was last raised two years ago). I am probably already paying $100-150 below market rate for my neighborhood due to the length of time I've been here and the area quickly gentrifying, so I'm forcing myself to shovel even if it's quite uncomfy with arthritis, though at the same time as long as it's not more than 8" of snow it's not bad exercise. I'm afraid of what will happen when we eventually are slammed with a full-on blizzard of +20 inches though.

It is certainly not the best exercise for our osteoporotic arthritic bodies to be out in the freezing temps lifting heavy frozen water.  I also worry about the "big one," that may or may not happen.  I would probably not go anywhere for a week or so, until the landlord comes around with the snow blower.

Where I live it also has a law about clearing the sidewalks, though they give people 24 hours.  Luckily I live by several single-family homes, so the owners always snow blow the sidewalk.  My landlord is pretty good about bringing the snow blower around, he has a few properties right in this area.  Though it is usually about 24-48 hours after the snowfall, so I've shoveled a path.  But, he does clear behind my car, and the whole parking area, which is really helpful, as I could not clear that large a space.

Dear Betty,

You have the unfortunate distinction of getting the Winter Sufferance Award this year. It's my own proclamation as the OP of this thread. Ha! While some have had more snow, you have endured relentless storms and frigid temps for much too long!

Your prize? I will await suggestions from those who really haven't a clue but I'm sure their hearts will be in the right place.

NBC Nightly News has been reporting snow figures that are off, from what others say.  For Philadelphia, tonight they say the average snowfall each season is just 7.9" and that you've gotten 33.7" thus far.  They say Chicago's average is 17.2" which seems very small to me.  They have Indy at 14", which I know is lower than what they get.  Louisville gets around 14 I think.

Is this bad reporting or about where the snow is measured?  Here in Louisville, the official rain, temp, and snow readings were moved to the airport, from the National Weather Service, which is in the suburbs and near my house.  Some still go on their readings, while the airport is suppose to be the official count now.  And, there can be a huge difference.  Some parts of our county got 5" of snow the other day, while the opposite end saw a dusting to 1 inch.  The people on the end of town were wondering what all the fuss was about.  They had been missing a lot of these repeated snowfalls.

I think the news cries "wolf" too often, too soon.  We heard relentlessly this Winter about the terrible storms abrewing.  None came to true fruition.  So this time, they predicted 2 -4 inches initially.  HA, We got hit, hell I'm not even sure of the total yet, as it's still blowing.

All morning long, all I saw were the wrecks within our county due to the snow and winds and the fact that you couldn't see the lines on the road.  I had to plow through a huge snow bank leaving our driveway and I won't bitch.  I only have to drive 3 miles to work on a less traveled main road.

I'm seeing all kinds of cool shit.  Complete cars covered since it was the first windbreak.  When I pulled into work Friday night, I pulled real close to our post van since it was staying put and is large.  I saw which way the winds and snow were blowing and  parked my wee ass little truck next to big papa.

When I left work, started my little 30 year old truck right up and pulled out.  Coming to work last night was no problem.  All the people who wanted me to drive faster were already in ditches.  :)  15 - 20 mph and it's really not that much longer to ensure you don't run into a couple of the nasty ravines.  We have a few where dumb ass people went there.  But that's usually when it's warm and beer is involved.  lmao

stay safe everyone.  Oh, and a warning.  I got all my work done too quickly tonight and enjoying my complementary, after work drink.  I'm doing office work and already had it caught up so now I'm researching setting for an office computer.  No one else uses it, but if ever questioned, but I don't want to explain why I have the search history I do.

Maybe a good idea to get some cheap but useable cross country skis.  One of the fun things to do in a snow storm in a big city, get out to the park and ski around a little.  Its not very tiring if you go at your pace and its a new way to look at your habitual surroundings.  I loved it when it snowed a lot in New York.

Also, high rubber boots make a tramp through a snow covered city like a fun adventure.

Not to lesson all the headaches of snow dumps on cities but there are some upsides...?

Most browsers have a "private window" option and if you use it, it won't record your browsing history.

You can access it in Firefox in the "file" tab in the top left-hand corner - it's called "New Private Window", or hit the Ctrl + shift + P keys.

In Chrome, either click on the button with the three horizontal lines in the upper right-hand corner and choose "new incognito window" or hit the Ctrl + shift + N keys.

In Internet Explorer you can find it in the "tools" tab - it's called "InPrivate Browsing", or hit the Ctrl + shift + P keys.

I don't use private browsing myself, but I've looked into it for a porn-addict a mate of mine. ;D

It's called bad, sloppy reporting which is why I don't watch the new on television (not that digital newspapers can't make errors either.

From NOAA, these are the monthly figures from our local forecast office -- PHL = Philadelphia International Airport which is generally where our reported figures are for the city as a whole. We average closer to 19" of snow annually. (Those figures are "off" because they don't include the past decade and one season we received 60" or so as our all time record)

Wikipedia says 22.8" but their source/link is dead.  This link says 22.4"

At any rate, doesn't the average moron realize that Philadelphia is 90 miles from NYC and that obviously either city receives more than an average 8 inches of snow annually?

Also, according to this I was incorrect earlier. Philadelphia has had 24.7" of snow this year in January, which means our seasonal amounts are even higher than what I thought because we had a large snow in December. So they were probably correct with their 33.7" so far statement because we had that ~9" storm in early December during the Eagles/Detroit football game.

ps: Chicago, per NOAA, averages closer to 38" but their all-time record is closer to 90"

According to this website:

http://goldensnowglobe.com/all-snowiest-us-cities/

Chicago thus far this winter season has had 45.8" of snow.  And what hits Chicago crosses the lake and hits us (usually).

Also, according to this:

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/images/iwx/climate/Monthlyrecords.pdf

South Bend's record snowfall was 86.1" in 1978, followed by 53.8" in 2011.

Sounds like a bummer time to be having a Superbowl on the east coast.  I wonder how that is going to pan out.

Cold, but probably no snow -- high that day of 36F but by kick off I'd say it will be ~32F; but at least it will not be 10F. I mean what did you folks expect in the northeast the first week of February? Anyway, American football is a Yankee invention first played between Rutgers and Princeton (1869) so it's only fitting to hold it in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The rest of you are just Johnny-Cum-Latelys with this American pastime.

I couldn't do it. When I played soccer in the fall seasons especially cold days in November were too much.  Course, we played in damp jerseys and shorts and thats it in those days. I suppose most fall/winter sports have miracle fabrics in this day and age, keeping everything warm and wicking all the moisture.

This is making me laugh -- NOAA's put up huge spans of watches now from east Texas to NC but only saying "may exceed 3 inches"

On the news this morning, it was reported we have had a little over 77" of snow this season.  Right now we're under a wind chill warning until 1:00 pm Wednesday.  And there's white out conditions; they're actually closing down stretches of major roads in the area because people just cannot see and are getting stuck.

On the up side, the ASO I work at is closed today since South Bend schools are shut down. :)

The temp here is 0F right now, going much lower tonight, and tomorrow.  There is a travel emergency on the roads until tomorrow night.  It's like Armageddon or something.

We are inline for another "Winter event" tonight in the form of a few ice pellets, after last weeks snowpacalypse, and now this, I'm not sure how much more I can endure.

They are very fortunate, Mitch lol.  It's -11F at the present, and that's without the wind chill value.

The wind chill warning runs through tomorrow at noon when it is supposed to warm up into the teen's and be sunny.  I just want it to be too cold tomorrow morning so schools will have to cancel again so I don't have to go to work lol.

There is a full fledged Alabama blizzard going one here . This is way way past a

The snow has begun here in Richmond -- we are only supposed to get 1-4" (depending on track) -- but just a bit down the road in VA Beach, they are talking about a foot-plus!!   Oh yeah and it's cold too -- 16 degrees and the sun hasn't set yet.

Oh well -- I'm off to the gym before the roads become too bad.

We've gotten well over a foot with more to come this weekend.  Or that's what it's showing right now.  And I'm happy to report...schools are closed again tomorrow due to the wind chill warning!  No work!

I've been staying in, other than driving myself to the hospital yesterday to get stitches in my right hand lol.

I can send her my spoon if it will help.

Oh Jeff, I saw Birmingham made NBC Nightly News w/Brian Williams tonight. They showed a shot of a highway with cars stuck and a couple yahoos trying to push them out of a snow bank by hand. When was the last time y'all made primetime? 1958?
