Title: AMG 2013 - Preliminary Site Location Preference - OFFICIAL THREAD
Post by: phildinftlaudy on August 26, 2012, 11:33:31 am
Hi All:

Almost one year ago (September 9, 2011) the AMG Preliminary Site Location Preference thread was started. To allow for a little extra planning time, I thought it would be good to start the thread for AMG 2013 Preliminary Site Location Preference a couple of weeks earlier. Please read the information below.  Also, when providing site preferences, please note that it would also be good to provide a time of year (month) that you would recommend for AMG 2013.

Please use this thread to state your site preference(s) for AMG 2013. PLEASE LIMIT YOUR YOUR RESPONSES TO A MAXIMUM OF THREE LOCATIONS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE CONSIDERED FOR SITE LOCATIONS TO HOST AMG 2013. Also, include a time of year (month) next to your site selection ---  so, try to present your info as follows:

Example:
Site                          Time of Year
ABC Land                             August
Candyland                             Sept
Never Neverland                    July

This thread will allow for the gathering of a list of potential sites for AMG 2013 - this list of potential sites will be narrowed down to the Top 3 locations for a future voting thread to be established.  Then we can discuss rational behind the selections (i.e. cost factor, distance, things to do, weather)

To allow ample time for preferences to be made and to narrow down the list based on those preferences - let's accomplish this particular part (naming preferences) by October 1, 2012.

Thanks for your input - if you have any questions regarding the above, feel free to PM me.

AMG 2013 here we come!!

Phil

I typically haven't participated in the site preferences, but figured I would this year...

1) Chicago            July or August
2) San Juan PR     August or September
3) Miami               October

Although, a cruise also sounds good and is pretty much all-inclusive

Santa Fe, New Mexico - August
Pocatello, Idaho (side trips to Grand Teton and Yellowstone)... tired of large city destinations - August
San Juan, Puerto Rico - August

Not sure about my third choice just yet, but otherwise I strongly support Phillicia's picks of:

Sante Fe, New Mexico - August
Pocatello, Idaho - August (for the Grand Teton and Yellowstone trips)

I'd already been talking about Yellowstone with a few on here.  I think it's time to get some Mutha Naytcha up in here.

fyi, Pocatello is a university town and has one gay bar/dance club and even Pride celebrations mid-August. Also, Craters of the Moon (http://www.nps.gov/crmo/index.htm).

I also have a native american friend who lives in Fort Hall.   :)

This honestly would be my #1 choice.

Pocatello, Idaho (side trips to Grand Teton and Yellowstone)... tired of large city destinations - August

I had to look up Pocatello - town of around 56,000 and the home of the University of Idaho...
Yellowstone would be a bit of a hike (pardon the pun).... some of the attractions in the area and their distance from the Clarion Hotel in Pocatello:

Pine Ridge Mall       3.0mi   (Thought Wolfter would like to know about this one)

Fort Hall Replica     4.0mi

Historic Old Town Pocatello    5.0mi

Ross Park Zoo    5.0mi

Fort Hall Casino   9.0mi

Massacre Rocks State Park  35.0mi

Lava Hot Springs   45.0mi

LDS Temple   50.0mi  (maybe an opportunity for a Mitt Romney siting)

Craters of the Moon    70.0mi

Yellowstone National Park   158.0mi

Oh, and the regional airport has a major runway expansion taking place.... Delta Connections is the airline that serves the airport - operated by SkyWest.... oh, and the airport opens an hour before the first flight and closes an hour after the last flight arrives/departs.... and they give you a free cup of coffee at the gift shop....

Sounds like a pretty hopping place.... one of the hotels in the town has a Ruby Tuesday's located right next to it (Yummy)....

I will definitely have to try one of their potatoes if Pocatello gets picked.... a real Idaho potato... cool (I will be able to scratch it off of my bucket list).

Well, of course if a non-urban area was selected people would have to team up and rent cars. I'm sure the cost would be offset by a cheaper hotel and food expense. (edit: oh looksie there's a 24 hour shuttle (http://www.saltlakeexpress.com/) from Salt Lake City airport! Figures with college kids and all... though from what I can find there are 3 round trip flights daily from Salt Lake City to Pocatello, and it's a jet not a prop plane)

Is there some rule here that all AMG's must be in cities? Seems rather limiting going forward, doesn't it, not to mention horribly discriminatory to those members here who do not care for the filthy, crowded environment of a city? Just trying to think outside of the box. It's very unfortunate that you feel the need to resort to a snarky attitude.

Orite... here's a scene from Charley's in Pocatello, hosted by the lovely Spyke Naugahyde!

... or even better -- here's how they "vogue" in Idaho (<<< SUPER FIERCE!!!)

No snarky attitude here...
I stated early on that I was not familiar with Pocatello and had to look it up....
Was merely pointing out the local attractions and fine dining establishments.
AMG is more about the people than the location -- although, I would have to say, personally, that Pocatello wouldn't be at the top of my list of places I want to visit before I die - but then again, neither is Buffalo - and I have been there several times.

As long as wherever we end up serves Corona, I am fine with the location.

A cruise would actually be one of my first choices; however, I know that not everyone wants to be on a ship and/or that some people may not want to have to participate in the whole set of dates that might be required if a cruise was selected...

I also would like to see AMG held in Ireland, Scotland, Australia, etc - but I also know that would be cost prohibitive for many...

Pocatello would definitely be a cheaper venue in regards to hotel (looks like the average price is around $90 a night); it would require the use of rental cars to get outside of the city limits to some of the other areas (i.e. Yellowstone)...

Wherever the preferences lead and the final vote takes us, I will be there....

So, in the end, snarky is all in the eyes of the beholder...   (gratuitious emoticon added === ;D  )

Now, now ladies......
If Pocatello wins, it wins.  There is no way anyone can cry discrimination of non-urban area, as this is put up to a vote each year.  If a small town is wanted, then members need to vote for it.
I hope you aren't just pot-stirring here.  Last year's planning went pretty drama free and I'd love to see that repeated again.

We have rented cars and vans on several AMG's, going from Toronto to Niagara Falls and to Quebec City from Montreal as well as busing to the pyramids outside of Mexico City.

We do tend to gravitate to major cities as they are easier to herd cats per se, and more to do in smaller confines such as museums, shows, restaurants, etc. but folks have often traveled off as some of us did when going to Mt. Rainier while we were in Seattle.

I think as Mike says people can vote for any destination they choose at this point and I too would enjoy going outside the US and Canada but I guess I figured not many others have indicated they would be able to vote for a destination too far away or too expensive though some of us will try to get to Melbourne, Australia in 2014.

I know most of the members are from the U.S., but will you guys consider having the gathering elsewhere? London, UK or someplace?

I heard London was chosen once before, but the turnout was very poor?

Australia would be a great destination.....would love to visit there some day.

I noticed that Melbourne has AGAIN been voted the most liveable city in the world (Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Survey) based on a number of parameters of 140 world cities. In fact there are 4 Australian cities in the top 10.

Australian cities are ALWAYS ranked in the top 10 global cities on any given survey. What is it about Australian cities that makes them so desirable? Anyone care to share?

I will be there, wherever it is. Of course, if accessible by train, that is a big plus.  ;)

As for my choices:

1. Vancouver, British Columbia -  July or August, except the first week of August.

2. San Juan, Puerto Rico - Ditto on the time

3. Santa Fe - Ditto on the time.

That is about as spread out as you can get. I would like a cruise, but there is often a problem with everyone arriving and staying the same length. Also, the last cruise I took I spent much more than I expected to.

But, I am happy wherever or however. I also can go pretty much any time, given enough notice so I can save the money. The exception is the first week of August, when I do already have something scheduled.

I also would love to go outside the U.S., but right now costs may prohibit that.

There is Melbourne in 2014, though.

HUGS,

Mark

2:  Nashville.....It's all about the music of course.

3:  Cleveland....because I think we can convince Ann to come for a visit. ;)

As far as leaving the US, I suppose I can extend my comfort zone and attempt it.  But be prepared for a gazillion questions. ;D

1)  San Diego in mid Aug

2)  San Francisco in mid Aug.

3)  Chicago in mid Aug.

Cities seem to be the easiest destination for a group like this.  A major airport is a plus, and lodging, so far, has been reasonable (thanks Dennis).  In two weeks, I'm going to both of the CA cities I mentioned.  San Diego is reasonably priced for lodging and flights, and everybody I've talked to loves it.  Plus, any non-desert location in CA will generally be comfy in August... DC's heat this past AMG was really bad.

Chicago--late July/August
Vancouver BC--July/August
Sante Fe/Alb. NM--July August

Just a comment about history:

We've been outside the US 4 times:  Toronto, Montreal, Mexico City, London (though I didn't get to go).

We've been East 4 times:  Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Washington DC. (Course I live on the West coast so pretty much everything for me is East. ::))

We've been West 2 times:  San Francisco & Seattle.  (Though there was an unofficial gathering in Las Vegas.)

We've never been to the mid-west and never to the south-west.

Just my thoughts.

My preferences:

1.  Sante Fe, NM
2.  San Diego, CA
3.  Vancouver, BC

There is a lot of sentiment for Chicago and it would be fine with me.  With our great resources, I am sure we can find affordable and acceptable lodging.

Of course, any place is fine with me!  I would like the timing to be either late July or early August before school is back in session as this affects several of our regular attendees.

Louisville-  Derby, first Saturday in May.  Everyone can sleep with me.

Miami is nice in winter months.  Could drive down to Key West.

Orlando- Universal Islands of Adventure.  Love the Harry Potter ride.  Summer is awful, though.

I've got my fingers crossed that I'll be able to save up enough money to go this year. Having to move house twice this past year and buy new carpets really damaged my already anemic wallet, but hopefully there will be no unusual expenses in the coming months and I'll be able to manage it. I can't promise though.

1. Chicago, anytime. I'd LOVE to visit a few blues-bars, as I learned how to drink in one in Kent, Ohio in the early '80s. I've always had a love for the blues, particularly Chicago blues.

2. New Orleans, but not in the dog days of summer. Otherwise, anytime.  I'd also love to visit the blues bars in New Orleans. Anyone here watch Treme? That show has whetted my already keen appetite to visit New Orleans.

3. The Isle of Man, anytime. It's a wonderful place and you'd all love it, I can guarantee that. My boyfriend's family owns a large bed and breakfast and I'm sure we could get a very good rate, if given enough notice. I could probably host a few people as well, and quite possible a few mates of mine would have beds available as well. The Isle of Man, including the town where I live, is surprisingly hiv, gay and transgender friendly. Think about it! :)

Just an update to my San Diego vote... I've been in SD for three days now, and it's BEAUTIFUL!  I'm staying in a very convenient location, and there's lots to do.  It's also very close to the gay areas, which is always good.  My hotel room is nice and is $55 per night.  My rental car was very cheap, too, as was my flight.  The weather is super.  Unless anybody has a reason NOT to want to visit San Diego, I'd strongly recommend it!

Another great thing about San Diego is that the weather is almost always wonderful.  Rarely hot, never humid, usually comfortable, even in the dead of summer.  While I listed Sante Fe higher (San Diego was my #2) as I think about it, we would have the most variety in San Diego, not to mention significantly lower lodging costs.

I agree with David, having visited four different times in my life, it is a great location!

Hi Mitch:

Here is a link that gives a bit of an idea of what AMG is all about:
http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=4794.msg54216#msg54216

Although, there is nothing that compares to actually going to one.

And yes, it is open to members, as well as those infected and affected by HIV...

Feel free to participate in the planning threads... it is always interesting how it unfolds and how it turns out...

Sorry to be so ignorant but what is AMG?

Sounds like you all have become a family and can't seem to wait until the next get together.

Open to new people joining in on the festivities?

Mitch

Don't feel ignorant.  You can read back through the entire AMG threads and get a great idea of what happens.  mostly though, cause we tend to not post the entire truth ;D

I've never heard anyone who has went complain that they didn't enjoy it.  I had to go way out of my comfort zone the first time and now it's one of the yearly things I save for and look forward to.  Hope you can join us.

Wolfie

People are very welcoming to all new comers. It just seems a bit cliquish with the post on the forums because they all know each other from years past, but any new person that shows up is quickly integrated and isn't left sitting alone like a wallflower, trust me on that.

You will greatly enjoy yourself if you decide to go and will make many lasting friendships.

I have to echo what Miss P just shared . If you decide to go you will have the best time and wish it wasn't over so quickly . There is just something special about attending AMG that's had to describe .

Like watching Mark do so many tequila shots that he spends hours sticking pesos in Mexican strippers' g-strings?

Why not just nominate Tijuana? You can have a 5 day ketamine binge. And proper tacos.

Why no -- I simply archive all of your text messages on Google-Voice

This actually sounds kind of fun , I may have to change my vote . I like that donkey that's painted to look like a zebra you can sit on and get your photo taken with , plus they let you wear that big sombrero .

I had an infamous night in Tijuana in 1991 on a business trip to San Diego (it is a half hour mass transit trip to the Mexican border from there.)  I recall making one of those drunken promises to God that "if I survived, I would never go there again.  Sick from Montezuma's revenge for three days.... nevertheless, in a group (for safety sake) it is great fun.  Of course San Diego has something for everyone even if you just stay in town.

For everyone contemplating changing your votes, as long as your destination is in your top 3 that is all you need to do now.  We will vote from among the top three vote getters if I understand the process correctly.  The order of our top three for this round of voting is unimportant.

All of the top four or five destinations are wonderful...and we always manage to have a great time regardless of where we end up.

And...to follow the recent discussions, our group LOVES newcomers and encourages as many as we can to see why we return year after year and plan our personal vacations around this event.

The Chicken Pie shop on El Cajon blvd was only blocks away from my house in San Diego , they some time served pigs in a blanket ... not exactly uncut cock but a tasty and age appropriate treat for an aging spinster such as you .

I will have to admit the only reason this place got a good review is because its been around forever , it would kind be like calling your granny a used up tramp to trash the place . They don't use much salt there , its a hit with the over 50 hot crowd  ;) .

If they decide to do this thing in San Diego we are going to have to discuss doing it on Coronado Island at the hotel Coronado . http://www.hoteldel.com/

My favorite place in the world is Huatulco, Mexico. If you go in November the weather is still great and there are no crowds. It is south of Acapulco. It is WAY out of the way, but they have an airport...I like going in November because I also get great rates on hotels...its a fabulous place to simply relax, and enjoy the beach.

Huatulco, Mexico----November

Ooops..I didn't read the whole thread first...

I've been there back in the 70's -- very pricey isn't it?

Probably so ... some of the past hotels we have stayed at would have been pricey if not for the group rate .

If people wanted to do Coronado there are reasonable alternatives other than staying at the Del .

Coronado Island has so much to offer you could never leave the island and have a great stay .
