As a 33-year-old man, lonely and with little contact with my family and old friends due to my HIV diagnosis

Sorry to hear that you have little contact with your family. I presume you think they would react negatively because of HIV status, or is it stigma because of how HIV is acquired?

i try through other friends, but its not so easy to give the explanation to everyone when they don't know my diagnosis.

Why would you need to tell them you are living with HIV? Surely its enough to explain to friends and family that you were sick, had a high fever and are stuck abroad and their help would be appreciated to get home?

Hi Thomas,

Sorry to hear that you have been unwell and about the situation with the insurance company. I do hope you have recovered from your bout of illness.

How are you feeling now? Do you have enough HIV medication, and what was your last CD4 & HIV count?

Let me know if you have tips or questions.

Have you asked the Hospital if they are willing to state in writing that the medical issues had nothing to do with your underlying health condition? Have you spoken to your embassy to see if they can assist you or talk to the Hospital?

Suspect it would have been more straightforward if your passport had been lost so you could ask for a temporary one to travel home on and deal with the bill from home. Alas, that's not the situation.

Best, Jim.

Hi Mindless,

Glad Dovato is working out for you. I discussed that regime about a year ago with my Dr, she advised to stick with three drugs for now.

Hope your results are good in two months. I think one of the issues the like of us have is these regular medicals, probably a lot of people wandering around out there who have no idea what their creatine levels are so don't worry over it.

Hello Dave,

Always nice to read your comments. I had my first blip at my previous 6 months check, then the next one was back to UD. My Dr. had a similar reaction, nothing to worry about.

I also had a creatinine increase for the last 4/5 years, last lab was 1.33. My Dr also says nothing to worry about, but after 4/5 years of constant increase I insisted to be referred to a kidney Dr.: he told me it's most likely normal aging (I'm 54) and to keep monitoring. If it increases more, we could do some more specific lab. My next check is in 2 months.

I'm on a 2 pills version of Dovato for the last 2 years, previously 2 pills Complera like you.

Allan,

OMG! Wow! Long time, no talk! Yes, I remember you from the San Fran AMG. You led us on a fabulous walking tour - one of the highlights of my trip!. Thank you for responding.

Yes, they essentially cut me off for being too disabled to respond to their questionnaire.  That's what happened, BUT the good news is I think I've gotten it resolved. I marched in to the SS office in person and laid it all out there for them, what happened and why. The woman I talked to called the one in charge of my case, and they said they are going to be pushing it through, Medicare and all.

Granted, I'll believe it when I actually see the deposits and get my next meds/doctor appointments,  but as for now the word us good.  They said to expect it to go through within the week. I'll post here as a final update.

So good to hear from you!

PS: ADAP was going to be my route if I didn't get anywhere at SS.

Hi Tim,

I remember meeting you at the POZ gathering in San Francisco in 2007. Those were better times.

I’m so sorry to hear of your stroke and that your disability benefits have been cut off. Essentially, they cut you off because you were too disabled to respond to their questionnaire. I always used to dread those questionnaires. (I’m 74 now, so I no longer have to deal with them.) It appears that disability insurers are just looking for ways to cut people off from benefits. I hope you’ll be able to get your benefits restored.

Would Georgia’s ADAP be able to help you with the meds?
