anyonout there has a job for me in the US?
« on: October 23, 2007, 05:49:10 pm »
I have been thinking about my future a lot lately.
One possibility is to find a job in the US and get a working permit, for which, I heard , no HIV testing is required.
I just want to see if on AM someone has suggestions or tips.

I leave all geographical possibilities open.
Dan lives in Tennessee, but I know the US would be easier to relocate.

I am 52 years old, speak 7 languages, from which Dutch, English, French, German fluently, and Spanish, Italian and Swedish quite fluently.
Did some medschool, have an acting degree and flew as a flight attendant for the German Airlines for 18 years.
I am now separated form my husband, with whom I ran my own wellness center for 8 years.

I am a Belgian citizen,in good health and look for  any position in hospitality, languages, foreign affairs.

Any suggestions welcome.

Hey Hermie Dear,

Try www.craigslist.org.  You can search in any region, there is no cost and a lot of companies use it.  Have the best day
Michael

After posting the link, I did notice the SF Bay Area is the first featured but that would be because... It is the closest to where I live.

I have tried www.monster.com in the past but found that a safety professional (my field) would pick up every job which specified safety in their listing and I was forever receiving fast food franchise job offers from organizations which specified "food safety".

Employment in your case falls under the immigration laws which you can look up on the State Department's website. Age, qualification, etc are all quite strict criteria. I think the best thing yu can do is start to document your relationship, get married in Belgium (and while I know that those unions are not -yet- recognised in the US) apply for a permanent visa on humanitarian grounds. I suppose there must be activist groups dealing/helping with the reunification of gay/poz couples.

And then there's the not official way "someone I know very well" just overstayed on her tourist visa 10 yrs ago and then officialised her situation in the next few years, jobs were mainly 'off the books' for the first years, has a green card now.

Or you can enter the green card lottery www.dvlottery.state.gov before 2 dec 07 it's free and official. HIV is , again, a reason to be excluded from entering the us if yu\shd win a green card, but again, take it one step at the time, I think there can b found away around this.

What worries me more is the health care situation over there, Europe might be boring but access to health care is optimal, esp. in Belgium.

Good Luck. :)

Hermie,

No leads for you (I am looking myself) but I can offer guidance as what I know from my own job searches:

Avoid registering at Monster.com - It is a spammers delight site that has n ever resulted in a job placement for me or anyone I ever knew.  Depending on the location I also find Craigslist to be the pits with scams and spammers (NYC was a good place to use craigslist, Charlotte is nothing but scams)

Careerbuilder.com is worth a look though can also result in spam - however I find their application process to jobs somewhat more user friendly and the listings somewhat more accurate for my search critera than other big job sites.

Now that I got the worst out or the cautious, let me suggest some places that have given me some great leads:

Americas Job Exchange: http://www.americasjobexchange.com/ is one of the best sites for clear cut listings of jobs in areas of either expertise or location.  You can also set yourself up for email alerts that come everyday that list anything from a key word search "activism" to location zip code.  I have multiple emails sent to me everyday and there has been more leads from this site than any that I have encountered.

Idealist http://www.idealist.org/ is a great site that has an employment section that is very current and has job listing in everything from nonprofits and advocacy organizations to some large corps looking for people to fill advocacy type positions.   I will note that this site actually is a very good network site of nonprofit and advocate organizations in general.  Also, this is the only site that I have ever had someone from a org not a recruiter, but the org itself) that I wantred to work at contact me directly because they actually looked at my profile and thought I was a match for their job.  It just seems to be a site where people actually believe in both what they are doing as well as give the benefit of the doubt to the people looking for jobs through it.

Linkedin (http://www.linkedin.com/) this site allows you to enter your resume and then search for business connections you may know and arrange interviews.  It's sort of a 6 degrees of Kevin bacon sort of thing.  Please note that this is not a U.S. specific site (though highly concentrated with U.S. parties) and you may be surprised on who you may already have a connection to through your past work relationships.  They also have a search for jobs area.  I also might add that linkedin offers an additional benefit:  You can build a much more expansive and narrative type resume on their site and reference it in your application or your resume (which often doesn't allow room for much detail)  I can tell you that by the number of hits I have had on my linkedin profile that I have in fact had some places IO applied to actually going to review it.

For my last suggestion, google desktop is required and the side bar view is best.  One of the gadgets available on google desktop is a job finder which browses and lists job postings from multiple sites (yahoo hotjobs, career builder, monster, idealist, and countless smaller places) and posts them as they become listed.  What is vital about this is not only the wealth of the information available but the timing.  I can tell you that the internet game of applying for a job is often a matter of first seen only seen.  For example I applied once for a job posted online and was told by the interviewer afterwards that I had lucked out as I got my resume in just under the gun.  When I asked what they meant I was told that in the first hour alone they had received in excess of 400 emails in application for the job and just simply had the rest go into the trash due to the impossible volume of email to be processed.  With the google gadget you can get the job posted on your desktop immediately and apply ASAP.

One last thing to note, (as was told to me by several people in the recruitment field) and realted to what I just wrote about about volume of applications, many large orgs now use resume reading software that scans peoples emails and resumes before a human even looks at them - and if it doesn't locate certain keywords that are required for a job or if it has unexplained blanks in the experience - the resume is electronically trashed.

There is also a site I found that lists Tennessee hospitality jobs: http://hotel-hospitality.jobs.net/Tennessee.htm

Finally, I found this listing of career events within Tennessee.  http://www.careerjournal.com/calendar/tennessee.html You should contact them via email and perhaps have Dan follow up via local phone call as for anything they can provide you whether direct leads or direction for where you should look.  They also have a job listing database.

Good luck...and whoever finds a job first owes the other one a drink!

I am surprised that no one has mentioned translator / interpreter at the UN in New York......they seem to have a constant need to hire people and you may be able to get someone in your national govt to sponsor you...... I know from personal experience that most of the diplomats want to have their "personal" translators  as well as the "official ones" working for the UN
Check with your Belgian consulate on both side of the ocean.....It may also help with the green card situation since UN and Embassies / Consulates are officially a special area and many foreigners work there...  maybe even as a event planner at the Embassy or consulate  where you would be an official employee of the Belgian Govt....
My experience revolves around the various officials that wanted to buy US product..mostly Military..and would bring their "translators/ interpreters" to all meetings.....so almost anyone in a trade mission would be a person to contact..they always had a huge contingent of people and needed help with accommodations, receptions, all kinds of meetings

Hey Hermie,

You and Dan liked San Francisco so much, I should point out a Northern Calif employment agency.  They have multiple offices in the Northbay and Sacramento areas  www.nelsonstaffing.com.  I only applied for 1 position with this firm in their Santa Rosa office and the company/client promoted from within their organization.

Something else you might consider is translators in the court systems.  I had a friend in L.A. whose wife was Chinese and that is what she did.  Don't have any idea on the pay scale though.  Have the best day

David,

Kindly keep your catty remarks to yourself. They're not appreciated and we have the reports to prove it. Saying "good luck" is not a get out card which negates the cattiness. And don't play innocent, I'm not stupid and I know what you're saying. I don't want to give you a TO, so don't push it. OK? Thanks.

Herman if you are considering migrating to West Tn you might want to think about the casinos that abound right outside of Memphis. They are always advertising looking for quality help.

Hermie, If you want to live in the arm-pit of Hell... Alabama its not as bad as some think...we have several German companies located here... Recently farther down south of Montgomery a new steel plant will be put in place just north of Mobile... and Mercedes is located in Tuscaloosa... I know we need interpretors for Korea... due to Hyandai ...I speak russian and german but, only enough to converse with family... the slow dialect from living in the south makes it impossible for me to keep up with relatives over in europe unless they speak slow and clear for me to comprehend. Atlanta may be a good option for you and Dan to reside due to the international airport located there... I'll keep my eyes and ears open ... and check for you...

Since you have experience with the hospitality/flight industry, maybe as a representative of a big Dutch/Belgian tour operator (Arkos - or is it Arke? - etc), meeting people at the airport, arranging transfers etc. But if such a job exists it would not be in Tennessee, probabaly Disney World or somewhere like that.

This is for Dutch people but since you speak Dutch, or you can do the same with the embassy in Belgium, perhaps it would be asier to search and interview for a Dutch/Belgian (or European) company operating in the US rather than an American company. I copied it from a Dutch forum (googled: Nederlandse bedrijven in de V.S.):

De Amerikaanse ambassade in Den Haag, Afd. Public Affairs heeft een dik boek met contactgegevens van alle Nederlandse bedrijven met vestiging in de VS, gerangschikt per staat. Bij mijn weten is dat - op afspraak - gratis in te kijken.

I might not be reading this right, but I don't think this is true.  I believe you do require a HIV test to obtain a work permit/residency in the US.  You may want to look into this issue further.

I also think regular employment for foreigners starts with the right visa
and Immigration barrs people on basis of hiv (with test results to be produced)
that's why I thought of a few -if slightly 'creative' not altogether impossible-
alternatives. Hope you get where you want to be , Herman.  :-*

the Belgian consulate in NYC and the embassy in Washington have lists of all companies from/

I'm wondering why you don't start your job search with your own government. Sounds like your language and people skills are a big plus that any government or large business could use. What about work at a college or university? Best of luck.

I want you all to know I am amazed, yet not surprised, but yes, feeling your love and the connection with my family in the US upon reading all your answers.

At least I can try and and connect to some agencies;

It happens that one of our customers works at the American embassy. of course I cannot discolose to her, so it feel ambiguous... she could very well get me in touch with the right people, yet it would sound very strange that I would  not "want" a green card.

I can get a visa for "people with special skills, for which no American can be found". however, that is a 6 month working visa. Does not require HIV testing.

I will keep looking.

Dan is supposed to come over for 1 month, if surgery permits. We will talk about it abundantly.

You are all so wonderful and although I do not write often, you all are in my heart every day.

love
