So a year ago I broke up with my girlfriend and I decided to start dating men. The first guy that I had intercourse with was someone I knew in high school, we used protection but I didn't know that the condom had broke and he continued to have sex with me. About 3 months later my hair started falling out and I lost about 40lbs, went to the doctor and I tested positive for Syphilis,HIV and Chlamydia. The boy I was with lied to me and had gave all those ST D's on the first time. To make it worst I just notice two weeks ago that I have anal warts on my anus and I'm super scared. I went to the doctor for my HIV update and I was just to em brassed to tell my doctor because I t don't want her thinking I get around. Truth be told I only had sex one time with a guy and now I'm paying for it. I still have these anal warts but I'm too em brassed to go to the doctor becks I think they going to have to remove them. I need some support. No one in my family know about my condition. Thank

Any doctor that is treating you for HIV has seen anal warts plenty of time. There's no reason to be embarrassed. And they don't care if you had sex with one guy, ten, or a hundred. Your doctor might refer you to a colo-rectal specialist to deal with this, though I've also had my primary care doctor deal with it. I've also had a dermatologist deal with them.

By the way, you can get anal warts even when you regularly use a condom.

You hit the negative jackpot with 3 STDs diagnosed at the same time. Now warts. I agree with Miss P. Going forward, you have got to be direct with your doctors. That's their job, to keep you in shape. Why on earth would you want to suffer any health problems, that medicine can treat!?
Curious to know - have you got numbers for HIV status? Are you on treatment, or learning about your HIV infection?
Anal warts will require a few doctor's visits to treat, at least. Don't hesitate to get this condition, or ANY medical condition, treated. Is there some reason besides embarrassment?
I hope you know, that the world is filled with EVERY kind of person who has HIV. You didn't get HIV because of being with a guy. You got HIV from unprotected sexual contact. If it was an accident, well, that's just bad luck for you. The way you make it sound, that one guy was a "Typhoid Mary" - seeing as he passed off 3, maybe 4 STDs........

How is your health, these days, besides the warts.... 40 pounds and hair loss, and 4 STDs, you really been through the wringer. Considering such dramatic health events, it would probably be best if you make your doctor into an ally and get all your systems back on go.... Only regular medical treatment is going to keep you fit to have a long and healthy life....

Daruis, heya, howdy. Your doctor will have seen more than anal warts in his career. Not all warts are caused by HPV, and not all HPV causes warts, but according to the CDC, around 80 million Americans have one type of HPV or another right now, and almost every sexually active adult will be infected with some variant in his/her lifetime. One of those people may very well *be* your doctor, and he/she isn't there to judge you. A doctor should be a partner in your health, and you deserve to be treated by someone you feel comfortable with. If not, try to find someone else.

Patient/Doctor relationships are important for good health outcomes, HIV or not.

You mention your family not knowing, but it sounds like high school was a while back, and I'm assuming you're not a teen. Are you worried your family will find out if you tell the doctor?

Roughly 90% of all anal warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) types 6 and 11, which are the least likely of over 60 types of HPV to become cancerous. Anal warts are usually transmitted through direct sexual contact with someone who is infected with condyloma acuminata anywhere in the genital area, including the penis and vagina. Studies have shown that roughly 75% of those who engage in sexual contact with someone infected with condyloma acuminata will develop these warts within three months.

The best news is, though after treatment warts are likely to re-emerge, treatment with HAART will significantly decrease the likelihood.

Everyone with HIV should be screened for HPV. My clinic does a anal pap and HRA yearly on all their HIV+ patients. Considering the prevelance of HPV and the higher rate of anal cancer among HIV+ patients (especially among msm) your doctor should be very comfortable with the subject.

Jkinatl2 is right. There are numerous strains of HPV. Often times the strains that cause warts are not likely to progress to cancer. However, the strains that do progress to cancer often times >do not< cause warts, so its prudent to get screened. Since HPV is very easy to catch, many people are infected with more than one strain of HPV.

If you are younger you can be vaccinated with the guardasil vaccine to prevent HPV infection. Some doctors will even prescribe it off label if you are older than the cut off (I think its around 26 years old, my doctor prescribed the vaccine for me and im getting close to 40 so it is done, plus there is a clinical trial right now studying the HPV vaccine in HIV positive men who have sex with men. Check to see if your clinic is participating).

I would like to thank everyone for posting. Honestly after I found out I had HIV in April of last year, I got depressed and I packed and moved to a new city and started a new life. I figured if I didn't admit I had it, it would go away. I finally came to terms that if I don't start learning about this virus and getting treatment, I would only suffer in the long run. I had to ge over my embrassment and go to the doctor. I actually went today and they did some lab work on me and I should know my strain and numbers within 2 weeks. I have to go back about the warts this week because I was to embrassed to show them. I'm 28 and I know I can not let my family or friends know what is going on. They are the type of people who would stop talking to me if they find out I'm infected. I'm glad I found a support group to help me out because I was getting to the point where I didn't want to get out of the bed in the morning.

Hi Darius,
Sorry to hear about your issue. Just take a big breather and take it one step at a time. Don't feel like you have to run out and tell everyone. Do it when it feels right for you. Give yourself some TLC first for a while and get you back in the right place, then you can think about telling others.

I'm in the same boat as you with the folks, My mom is getting old and sickly and worries about everything, so at this time I don't feel the need to let that cat out of the bag with her as of yet.

One step at a time, buddy. You went to the doctor, and that's great. You're gonna have to see him again, and maybe talking about the other issues will seem easier in time. Don't wait too long, though! It's probably nothing serious, but why let it fester longer than it has to?

(This from the guy who had no doctor at all for, oh, 2 decades or so.).

i had the warts once before i was poz, my doctor just said let me see them. there was only a couple so just froze them off and have never had a problem since then. my doctor is gay, so he has seen it all.

Sorry to here about what your going through, this is my first time to this the forum thing so still getting the hang of things. I to had anal warts and had to get a biopsy I was prescribed a cream by the name of Imiquimod its not over the counter it has to be prescribed. After the first day of use I saw results. I was shocked to see something work so fast after the first three days. the cream it self is only 0.25g and only need to be used once every three day its not FDA approved to go inside the anal just around it. I also had warts on the inside of the anal which had to be removed by freezing or burning. well thankfully that cream that I used must have slipped into the anal after applying it on the outer area. when I went back to the doctor for the procedure to be done they told me that all the warts that were on the inside of the anal wall were gone. my reply was thank God. the cream really works hope this helped answer your question and know that your not alone.

Dont get all nostalgic about sex before your time.

I just read all about Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen ("Out of Africa") and got curious to learn about how one lived with and treated syphillis, before antibiotics. It was not pretty.

In the 60's and 70's you could get any STD, of course. HIV was around in the 70's but nobody knew about it.. It was around much longer than that, of course.. But there had to be quite a number of people with HIV in the 70's since people were dying of AIDS in the early 80s.

Yes I'm happy I found this group! It feels so good to talk about this to some people that understand. Oh yea I agree, why does great sex comes with all of these problems! Oh well I guess we have to just deal with it and move on huh. I wish I can find a gay doctor and I think it would be much better. I think the worst part for me is that I don't think I would not be able to have any kids. The messed up part is the boy that I caught all this from is actually going around sleeping with people unprotected and giving people things on purpose.

Listen, you take care of yourself and treat all your STDs. Come to terms with your orientation and you can look forward to tons of great sex without all these STD problems...

Not too many people on this forum have much patience with the narrative of the "aids monster" or "typhoid mary" you are going on about. First of all, that guy is not a "boy". And he is presumably not sleeping with kids. We are all adults and accept responsibility for our actions.

Secondly, we have all heard this story too many times, and the stereotype EASILY comes back to bite any of us, HIV+ folks, on the ass. Because HIV- folks are very quick to demonize any of us as HIV monsters spreading disease. Can you see it a bit from that perspective, perhaps?? There are plenty of hideous laws in many places that discriminate against our sexual lives. There is a heaping stinking load of stigma based on ignorance and fear -- of HIV+ people and HIV the virus.... Please don't contribute to it and please try to work on getting any of this stigma out of your own beliefs... It will be better for you, going forward....
