Need some insight on this

Hello all

I had unprotected sex with this girl I just meet two weeks ago, before we had our fun the first thing I asked was, "do you have any HIV or STD?" and she said no, she asked me the same and I replied no. Couple days after I noticed a discharge coming from my penis, this did not last long though. I get these weird feelings that something is coming out from my penis as if Im about to pee but when I rush to the washroom to examine my penis, nothing came out. However my urethra feels warm. I also noticed black spots on the head of my penis. I was scared and talked to her, she doesn't speak the greatest english (she's spanish) so I asked her if she has "VIH? and she said no, that she gets tested every month (that's what she says) We had sex again but THIS time I ran to the store and bought some condoms. This time I was wearing my eyeglasses and noticed some red bumps around her vagina, I asked her how did she get those bumps and she said it's not STD related. I also noticed another bump which to me looked like a large herpe, she said that the doctor was trying to shove something to her during testing for pregnancy and accidentally lefted a mark (doesn't make too much sense) I haven't had any bad headaches, fever or sore throat but I know that doesn't mean anything.

I went to the walk in clinic because I was pretty afraid and they also looked at my penis, I explained to them as well on the story how I meet this girl and we had our fun. The doctor told me that I shouldn't worry about contracting HIV because I haven't had sex with gay men or had sex with any escorts but he believed that I
caught genital herpes. I also went to another walkin clinic just to get a second opinion and the doctor also believed that I didn't catch HIV but thought could of caught Gonorrhea. I dunno, two doctors tell me that they don't think I caught HIV but my penis feels pretty weird, I also see some sores on it. So far I haven't had a discharge but I just noticed now black spots on my penis. It was burning for awhile but right now as Im typing this it's not burning anymore.

I do know that I should get tested and that's what Im going to do but my question is do you think the worst I can catch is an STD and not HIV? If I catch Gonorrhea I wouldn't complain too much since it's curable. But if I catch genital herpes then my life would suck, if I have a relationship with a girl I don't think she would feel comfortable in having sex with me because she would be afraid in catching something from me. What if I get her pregnant then the baby could catch it too.

I know all it takes is just that one person, Im kinda nervous from this. My godness in 3 months when I get tested and it comes out HIV negative, Im going to jump with joy. I mean the girl I had sex with was angry at me because she felt that I didn't trust her, but when I noticed those red bumps and another large bump (it wasn't red colored it was more brownish color, like it matched her skin color) it had me really concerned. She told me I was the second guy she had sex with. Her last boyfriend used a condom and she didn't want him using it.

You went to two doctors that are quacks for their statements. Test at 3 months post exposure for a conclusive test result. Always use condoms correctly and consistently and you won't have to worry about contracting HIV and most STDs.

Yes, you can catch other STDs and not get HIV. Other STDs are much easier to acquire than HIV. As long as you consistently use condoms for vaginal and anal intercourse you will be well protected against the sexual transmission of HIV. Asking someone if they have HIV or STDs is not an effective way to protect yourself. You have to assume that the person is HIV+ and protect yourself accordingly. Even well meaning people don't always know their accurate HIV status.

HIV is significantly harder to transmit from female to male than the other way around. So for you the risk is lower but still risky. So testing is necessary about the incident you've reported. Do it at 13 weeks for a conclusive and what I expect will likely be a negative result.

Your doctor's comments about sex workers and gay sex are antiquated and ridiculous. HIV is sadly democratic and affects the population across the board. Use condoms everytime and you won't have to worry.

Other STDs are easier to acquire so we recommend that anyone who is sexually active ought to at least once a year have a complete STD panel done.

Good luck with your test. I expect you to come out of this ok. But learn from this experience and always use condoms in the future for intercourse.

Cheers.

Hello

She just got tested at a walkin clinic and will get the results within 3-4 weeks. If it comes out negative then I'm good. The doctor also did an STD test on her, the bumps that I was explaining about he said it doesn't look like
it's STD related. Maybe I don't have too much to worry about. However I am still going to get tested just to be absolutely sure and have a peace of mind.

Wish me luck ;)

Someone else's test result is NOT the way for you to be certain of your HIV status. She could test negative now and still not have seroconverted from a very recent risk. I don't say that to scare you but rather to wake you up to an important reality.

The only negative test result you can and should rely on is your own test result taken at the right time. Which is 13 weeks after a risky incident. Sure her testing negative will be encouraging, but it's YOUR test result that finally matters.

And I do expect you are very likely to test negative.

Cheers.

I've been feeling pretty odd lately I hope to god these aren't HIV symptoms

It feels like a weird pressuring sensation in my head, it doesn't hurt at all, actually I feel it more on both sides
of my head on the tempo. I've been getting these feelings for couple days now? I know it sounds vague but my head feels like there's isn't enough energy.

I would also get random cramps on my body. Again it doesn't hurt but I can feel them, it's on and off feelings.
They disappear after couple secs.

I'm getting pretty nervous that I caught something. I know it's way to early to say but I don't know. I've been
trying to think positive.

There is nothing even remotely HIV suggestive about your "symptoms." If they persist, discuss them with your doctor.

Stress and anxiety can work very hard on the body and the immune system. Just saying...

I also read that if your circumcised then it also reduces the risk is this true? Because I just realized that I'm
circumcised.

So far I haven't had any problems peeing, no burns or sores, no sores on the penis neither. No fever, no headache, the only thing I've been experiencing was a bit of muscle ache appearing on random parts of my body. It goes away then reappears then goes away again. I haven't had any odd discharges lately neither. Maybe I am overreacting a bit. I should just relax lol. Getting tested 6 weeks later, isn't that a little too soon?

Several research centers have documented that male circumcision significantly reduces the risk of HIV acquisition by men during vaginal sex.

I just tested positive for chlamydia

I know it's curable but I am so angry and scared that I will contract HIV now.

Well fortunately simply because you caught one has nothing to do with the other. The odds remain in your favor that you will test negative for HIV.

Just for your peace of mind you can do an initial test at 6 weeks for HIV. Assuming you test negative, which is very likely, then when you re-test at 13 weeks the likelihood of again getting a negative result is VERY likely.

I think I may agree with you Sir Andy

I took her to the walkin clinic to do a rapid HIV test and it came out negative. She told me that she had
unprotected sex with her ex boyfriend last yr (2008) and I was the only guy she had sex with this yr (2009)
I met her in November which means that's more than 6 months period and the HIV would of showed up in her blood by now and would of tested positive if she had HIV. However she did test positive for chlamydia as well.

I still experience muscle aches, they don't hurt or anything but I can feel it. Maybe that could be a whole different problem maybe?

Rob,

You still need to test for hiv yourself. Even if she is hiv positive, the odds are still greatly in your favour that you'll test negative.

If you're worried about your aches, see a doctor. We cannot diagnose you here.

Hello

I do plan on getting tested in two weeks which will be my 6th week. I do understand that I will have to get
retested again in 3 months for a guaranteed result. How accurate is it to get tested in 6 weeks though? I read in many places that people have actually been HIV positive within the 6th week.

The girl I had sex with was called in to a public health center to discuss the STD she had. She also got another rapid HIV test and it came out non reactive (negative) again, this was on December 22st. Yes I do understand that I should still get tested regardless but if I get tested on the 6th week then I guess the odds are definitely in my favor?

Rob,

The odds were in your favour from the start as hiv infection is much more difficult to accomplish from a woman to a man.

A six week negative is highly unlikely to change. I don't expect anything other than a negative result for you.

Good luck with that test.

And use a condom everytime for vaginal or anal intercourse. Then you will be well protected and won't have to worry about HIV.

I read around the reason why they suggest that you should get tested in 3 months is because
people with pre-existing immune disorders such as chemotherapy patients or recent organ transplant recipients who must take immune system-suppressing drugs.

I also forgot to mention in the previous post that I had some open sores on my penis when we were
having unprotected sex. I do understand that the odds maybe in my favor but with the open sores
what are the chances?

You need to stop "reading around." All you are doing is continuing to stir up your fears and anxiety. All to no good purpose.

You've even got the 3 months issue wrong. For those with organ transplants or chemo patients it's actually 6 months that is recommended for testing.

In the end the only thing that is going to give you the answer you need is your HIV test result. So asking me to guess and speculate about whatever kind of open sores you had on your penis is just more of what ifs. You really need to get productively busy with other things in your life while you're waiting to test.

Ann and I have already both told you that we expect you to come out of this ok. We're not going to be able to say more than that.

Hello!!!

Please don't flame me for saying this but here it goes.

I went for another HIV test but it was 5 weeks after exposure and I received another
non reactive result (negative)

Yes I understand that I will need to reconfirm at 13 weeks but what are the chances of becoming
positive from getting a negative after 5 week rapid hiv test?

Hello all

I just wanted to post here that I went for my 6th week (42 days) HIV rapid test and the results
came back negative. It looks like I'm almost home free you guys. However I will reconfirm at the
12th week. If that is also negative then my testing will be done and I will never engage in
unprotected sex ever again unless I get married.

If my 6th week is unlikely to change would you consider me very lucky?

A negative result is always a happy thing. At 6 weeks it points the way to your getting another negative when you re-test. That's what we expect you to get.

Now, get busy with other things in your life during the waiting time.

Hello I just wanted to post my 13th week HIV test and it came out negative. I just wanted to thank you both
(Andy Velez and Ann) for the reassurance that you provided to me and I must say I've learned a valuable
lesson from this. I also tested for the STD's and came out negative including chlamydia so I am now negative
all across the board. I must say it was a pretty long wait but it was just not worth it. Having to wait 3 months
with all the stress that build's up just for having sex with someone for like 10-15 is just not worth it. Just not
worth it at all. It was weird that nurse checked the calendar and said you've actually waited 12 weeks and I was like "are you sure? From November 25th/09 to February 25th/10, that's actually 13 weeks and she said no! I was like whatever not going to argue I wanted to do this test and get it over with lol!

I will be using condoms for sure even though I fucking HATE USING THEM!! One of the nurses suggested
to put some lubricant on the tip inside the condom as well on the outside, I will try this when the time comes.
I only wish there was that one condom that made it feel like the real thing.

I got a question though, Im thinking of getting a nose piercing where they use a needle and not a gun, I guess that would pose no risk for HIV but hep? Any idea if they use a new needle from a package or they would just clean it?

rob,

Piercing places aren't in the business of transmitting blood-borne illnesses to their customers. Any reputable place will welcome questions about their hygiene practices, so ask.

One thing you need to remember about putting lube inside the condom is that this practice can make it easier for the condom to slip off. Just keep an eye on it and grab a hold of the base each and every time you withdraw from your partner.
