Condom broke
« on: August 08, 2010, 12:02:43 am »
Tonight I had receptive anal sex with a guy. The condom broke and I realised after that he came in me.  Do I have time to wait until morning before asking him his status or is it more critical? What should I ask him and what should I do if he says he is positive or negative?

If he says he's negative what will you do? Believe him?

You should assume he's positive and get tested in 13 weeks. The likelihood of you testing positive is not huge, but it's not zero either.

Thanks MtD,
I went to my local Accident and Emergency for a risk assessment and they have prescribed PEP. I thought that it was important to start immediately but the pharmacist suggested I wait until around 8 or 9 pm otherwise I would have to be taking a dose in the middle of the night. Does this sound right?

The important thing for PEP to be its most potentially effective is to start as early as possible within the 48-72 hour period after the risk.

Someone saying they are HIV negative is not ever to be the basis of your knowledge of your own status. When you have a risk such as yours, only your own negative result will tell you what you need to know. PEP is for 28 days. Your final test result needs to be at 13 weeks after the completion of PEP in order to be definitive.

You can test initially at 6 weeks after the completion of PEP. If you get a negative at that point then it is likely that your 13 week result will continue to be negative.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I am coming to the end of taking PEP but am unsure of how to stop.

I take 2 Kaletra and one Truvada in the evening followed by 2 kaletra the following morning.

Do I stop after the evening or morning dose? I started with the evening dose.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks

Fred,

You just simply stop when you have taken PEP for 28 days. It doesn't matter if you stop in the morning or evening, but logic says that your last dose should be which ever you took second (the first time you took it), the morning or the evening dose.

I got my results for my 6 week post PEP test today, and glad to say it was negative. The health adviser told me that the test was a antigen and antibody test and that it was pretty much conclusive even at 6 weeks. I have made an appointment for a 12 week test but feel pretty confident with today's result.

Thanks

That's excellent and happy news. And I too expect you to continue to test negative.

Get busy with other things while you're waiting to re-test. Doing that will help the waiting time to pass more easily than you may imagine is possible.

Cheers.

I  was having anal sex through a gloryhole with a condom I put on a guy. After a short while I noticed that he had removed the condom (I noticed immediately and didn't take his cock raw and so sucked him instead. He then came in my mouth no warning. Some people have no manners Any risk here?

Thanks

Fred

I urge you to stay extra vigilant so that broken or removed condoms do not become more commonplace. I also hope that you have regular and thorough STD screenings so that your own personal health is without question.

The only documented HIV risks come through unprotected vaginal or anal sex. This risk occurs even when someone does not ejaculate inside of you. Pre-ejaculatory fluids can often contain high levels of HIV.

It is fortunate that your mouth contains over a dozen elements that neutralize HIV. I would not recommend undue anxiety over this oral incident insofar as HIV is concerned.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

Thank you for your reply. I do have regular check ups and take responsibility for my sexual health, however your advice to be vigilant is welcome.

Despite the condom removal this was just an oral incident. It is rare that a guy would come in my mouth during oral (most guy's ask) but the 'unsafe' behaviour of the guy got me slightly worried and so I posted here even though I know oral is very low risk.

Thanks

Hello back with a new Incident.

Had a 3-some. The first guy fucked me with condom-fine no problem. As the second guy  entered me the condom popped and broke and I moved off him straightaway.  I figure that this is a very low risk but not zero risk. Could I have someone's assessment please?

Also in 20 years of condom use this is the 3rd break ever. Why would a condom break so easily and quickly, it never happened like this before?

Thank You

frederick

Your risk was minimal, very minimal with that break and quick interruption in intercourse. Just as a precaution get tested at 13 weeks. And yes, I do expect you to test negative.

Condoms break for lots of reasons including not being the right size for the wearer or being used beyond the date for use or through very vigorous fucking or lube being used is not water-based.

Make sure whoever is penetrating is wearing a  fresh latex condom that fits and that any lube which is used is water-based.

I expect you to come out of this incident ok.

Thank you Andy,

Probably the condom was passed its use by date, or damaged as it broke immediately on entry.

I will get tested  in 3 months as part of my usual check up.

Fred,

There are two leading causes of condom breakage.

The first one is not using enough lube or using the wrong type of lube. You need to use water-based lube ONLY with latex condoms. You can use what you like with polyurethane condoms, but you're best off assuming any condom is latex and using water-based lube.

The second most common reason for condom breakage is not making sure there is no air bubble in the tip of the condom. You need to pinch the tip with the thumb and finger of one hand while rolling it down with the other. Once it's on, give it a firm stroke from tip to base to make sure there's no bubble in the tip. This can particularly be a problem with reservoir tips, so pay attention to this step in condom usage. Given the way you described the breakage (it popped), it sounds like this was probably the problem in your case.

If you do find trapped air, grasp the tip with one hand and roll it back up with the other, then try again.

Make sure you read through the condom and lube links in my signature line. The first one is particularly informative and the site is available in several languages.

Like Andy, I also expect you to test negative over this brief incident. Glad you noticed the breakage right away.
