w00T!

out of the 22+ yrs on meds, I started checking my % a few yrs ago. When I saw that only on good days did it even begin to approach 20, I went back to not caring about the %.  ;D Like I told my doc, my 320ish cd4s have kept me out of the hospital for 15 yrs so they must be doing their job right ;)

my arm isn't sore this morning and my headache is gone... and I don't have the flu, so that shot is doing its job right. LOL

A few Facebook friends posted this article, which says a Johns Hopkins scientist slams the flu vaccine, saying it is useless and causes so many side-effects.  I am sure this is being spread around, as I have seen it 3 times already.  I am sure many here have studies at hand to counter what he says.

I do init! Every 5 years.

I was told my 5 year shot I got was all I would need.  I also got the Prenvar 13 or whatever it's called.  Is this what you all know to be true?  I don't quite understand why I needed another, 5 years after the first, and wouldn't need another in 5 years.  I do know I got pneumonia right at the end of the first 5 years.  Could be a huge coincidence, but it does make me wonder whether it was wearing off.  I was just 2 months shy of my 5 year anniversary of the first vaccine.

There are two pneumonia vaccines: PCV13 and PPSV23 -- someone can correct me if I am incorrect, but for someone with HIV the recommended course is to get the PCV13 shot first followed 8 weeks later by the first PPSV23 shot, then a booster shot of PPSV23 again five years later. That is then all you need for life I believe.

source

When I got my flu shot today I had them check my records and I had my first shots in '04 and then the last one in '09 so this makes sense. They did this also because my last NYC doctors failed to forward my records so we were starting from scratch so I may have already had this done, but they said never mind no harm done/better safe than sorry blah blah blah.

Correct re: pneumonia vaccines, except that you also need another PPSV23 after age 65, unless your first five-year booster is after that age.... Also, if you should happen to get PPSV23 before PCV13 (as I did, unfortunately) you have to wait a year for the 23, or risk them canceling each other out.  I don't understand why...the five-year interval between PPSV23 vaccinations must be maintained.

Also a good idea for us to get meningitis vaccine.... Two doses, 8 weeks apart, followed by a booster every five years.  Also, people with no spleen, regardless of hiv status should be vaccinated, and require two injections.

My doctor has me get a flu shot in September, followed by a booster in January...4 months later.  However, I work in a high-risk setting, so maybe two flu shots a year aren't needed by everyone.  I don't know.

I used to only be focused on the vaccines for hepatitis and the flu.  After hearing from an acquaintance of an otherwise healthy man dying of invasive pneumococcal disease (he had no other risk factors and was not immune compromised), I started to pay closer attention to the recommendations for HIV positive people.

Stay healthy everyone....
