Please, serious for just a second, advice please
« on: March 01, 2007, 08:16:47 PM »
Have been asked by BBC in Uk to take part in a documentary, prime time, weekday, hosted by Stephen Fry, done by same team that did a very respected show on bipolar. They are asking me to appear undisguised, for no fee. They will hold intellectual rights to my interview  but may not show it uncut or for promo purposes, but may transmit across all media, worldwide.
I know no one can make decision for me.
I'm terrified of letting the 'community' down, I look and feel like crap right now and tend to speak my mind.
All those who already commented/bored with me stressing about this I apologise.
I'm in such a dilemma. If I do it and its crap, I'm buggered, and if I do it and its great DITTO. Want to do it for all the right reasons but may regret either bloody way.
got to tell them 100% in AM friday

I know i'm going to enjoy the party in the afterlife, but do you all mind that I'm going to be VERY late!!!

Ah, hello? STEPHEN FRY!

It's your obligation to do this documentary. Phone them at once, you silly queer and lets have no more of the prevarication.

I'm meeting with the assitant director tomorrow about this program and it's about a 99% certainty that I'm going to do it. I'll know for sure after the meeting tomorrow. I've been keeping this under my hat so far, mainly because I wasn't sure. The more I think about it, the better I feel about it. My daughter and my partner are behind me 100% so that helps.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Well, since it is AM in Arizona already, it is too late to comment on this.

We all have to do what is in our hearts, but if Goddess saw fit to give you a mind that tends to speak the truth, then it follows that we must do that at every opportunity.

We here across the pond are with you all on this one, and we must never apologise for speaking our minds.  Thank goodness we still have one.

Somehow, in the end, we always find the strength and knowledge to deal with the consequences and more times than not, we are awakening those who are either asleep, or want to speak out but don't have the skills or talent to do so.  Sort of like the standing applause that I received from all the State HIV workers and volunteers at the last meeting in Poenix.  I was floored that anyuone gave a damn about my six years of volunteer work here.  You just never know who you might be inspiring.

Love,
The Bible contains 6 admonishments to homosexuals,
and 362 to heterosexuals.
This doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals,
It's just that they need more supervision.

Not sure if you've made your decision but for what its worth when I made the 'Positive Women' documentary for the BBC I didn't have any say in what bits of the 15 odd hours of footage they filmed of me they would use. However after meeting with the executive producer I trusted him implicitly to do justice to my story and that is what he did.

If you are not 100% comfortable with the whole set up then don't do it because once the filming has been done you have no control over what will come out.

Having said that my experience of the whole filming/broadcast/media attention was very positive and I don't regret going that public for one moment; even though it ultimately led to the end of my relationship with my mother.

I may also be appearing in this programme too but am waiting to hear back from the producers if they still need more individuals to take part.

Let us know what you decided.

Best wishes,

Emma

Tigger,

Word of advice.   I've done both print and television bits.   Not just for HIV.

Here's my opinion:   GET IT IN WRITING

Do not agree to film anything if they are going to edit it out and make you look foolish or utilize the footage for other unrelated purposes.

I've had several offers since I've been open about my status.   Other than a few print stuff I have turned down everything else because the ONLY way I would agree is if I had complete editorial control.

This sounds like a great cause.   It's promising they say the footage won't be cut.

Recently, a friend of mine did a documentary about HIV and Crystal Meth Addiction.   It was edited all to Hell and he was completely misrepresented on AIR.   Ugh!   I believe he had some long filming of several hours and they chopped it to 4 or 5 minutes.  He wasn't represented accurately whatsoever.

Good luck whatever your decision!

I may once again do something, but I'll never do another television deal unless I have everything in writing and am allowed to edit and produce it properly.

Again, get it in WRITING.   I think many people are so dismayed by having their efforts hacked down on their first attempt they never do it again especially if you are publically embarrassed or made to look bad.
