Testicles HIV hiding spot
« on: February 08, 2007, 11:41:45 PM »
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6323191.stm

The study authors explained: "Although highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) may achieve undetectable virus levels in the blood, virus replication in the testis may permit continued spread of the virus.

Anyone else see this?

Well, I have now.

This isn't too surprising. HIV hides in all sorts of places, incliuding in the intestines, brain and nerve tissue and now, of course, the testes.

I wonder if the ovaries are similar reservoirs? I know that really has nothing to do with transmission, but it could impact treatment for women.

I do wish the BBC would learn to spell AIDS though. Its one of my pet peves.

HUGS,

Mark

Hi Theresa,

I'm not surprised by this finding either. We've known for a long time now that men who have undetectable serum hiv levels often have detectable levels in their semen. At least now we have a better understanding of why.

Mark raises an interesting question about ovaries, but I doubt whether there will ever be funding made available to check it out. The main reason (I would imagine) that they are checking out testis is because of the transmission factor involved. The ovaries are not likely to play a part in transmission.

Hmm... now cervical tissue may be another story. Wonder if they'll ever do similar tests with tissue taken say from cone biopsies of hiv positive women's cervix... oh dear, how do you spell the plural of cervix? ::)

Thanks for the article Theresa.

I'm finding the announcement ill-timed for popular frenzies about discoveries and bogus treatments.  Before the winter holidays, the announcement could have spurred HIV-positive men to experiment with injecting colloidal silver -- that old Nation of Islam hoax -- into their scrotums with the hope of achieving viral extermination and fabulously shiny balls!  ;D

I had this awesome plan to cut out organs where HIV is known to hide... I mean, I really didn't need my intestines, lymphatic system, and central nervous system.

This bit of trivia means I'm rethinking that plan.   ;D

Being serious for a moment, I wonder if a vasectomy would keep the HIV hiding in the testicles from being passed into the semen?

Probably not... I wouldn't be a bit surprised if HIV hides out in the Cowper's and prostate glands.

Semen versus Sperm ?

Quote: "Several studies have been conducted to determine the infectivity of seminal and spermatozoal cells in order to access the possibility of transmission from an hiv infected male to his female partner.
Quale and colleagues reported that hiv could be found in seminal cell preparations but not in spermatozoal fractions. Also was demonstrated that seminal plasma and nonspermatozoal cells serve as main viral reservoir, whereas motile sperm were unlikely to be infective because of lack of expression of CD4 & CCR5 receptors on spermatozoal surface"

Semen versus Sperm ?

Sperm are single-purpose cells for the transport for your DNA, that's all they can do, and all they "stick to" are eggs; while semen is the sperm plus their transport fluid.  Semen was already known to support a variety of other virii and bacteria, so adding HIV to the list was already assumed.  Besides, go check out articles on "sperm washing" for using the sperm of male HIVers to produce children--the development of that procedures was based on not having detected HIV within sperm in over a decade of research.

Every time I hear the phrase sperm-washing, I get this image of sperm cells (with cartoon smiling faces, of course) hanging by their tails off a washing line.

Sorry for the hijack, but I just had to say that. Maybe the image will stop haunting me now. ;D

I guess my post should have indicated that I wonder how much the testicles contribute to the total viral load of semen vs. that of the other glands.
